China Played No Role in Khmer Rouge Politics: Ambassador

China’s ambassador to Cambodia told a group Friday that the Chinese had not aided the Khmer Rouge but had sought to keep Cambodians from suffering under the regime.
“The Chinese government never took part in or intervened into the politics of Democratic Kampuchea,” the ambassador, Zhang Jin Feng, told the opening class at Khong Cheu Institute.
The Chinese did not support the wrongful policies of the regime, but instead tried to provide assistance through food, hoes and scythes, Zhang said.
“If there were no food [assistance], the Cambodian people would have suffered more famine,” she said.
The comments come as the Khmer Rouge tribunal prepares for its second trial, of five high-ranking members of the regime.
However, a leading documentarian of the regime said the Chinese may want to revise that statement, given all the evidence that points to their involvement with the Khmer Rouge.
“According to documents, China intervened in all domains from the top to lower level: security, including the export of natural resources from Cambodia, like rice, bile of tigers, bears and animal skins to exchange for agriculture instruments,” said Youk Chhang, director of the Documentation Center of Cambodia.
“In the domain of security, Chinese advisers trained units to catch the enemy, and some of the trainers went to inspect the outcome of the training at the local level,” he said.
China maintained close diplomatic ties with the Khmer Rouge after they came to power. It was one of only nine communist countries to keep an embassy in the country after April 1975.

Yes, the Khmer Rouge government wanted to show to China its Mao's doctrine of self reliance. So the Red Khmer paid for Chinese weapons to fight the Vietnamese and Soviet internal subversion with little that they had such as rice, tiger skins etc..
The Chinese embassador now represents the more moderate Chinese Communists who sent the Maoist gang of four to jail. In the Khmer Rouge time (1970's)and after the Vietnamese invasion(1980 to 1990's), yes, the Chinese governments of Chau En Lai and Deng Shau Ping supported the Khmer Rouge including the US and the Thai governments to fight the Vietnamese and the Soviet expansion in Asia and their occupation of Cambodia. Everybody think that Khmer are very stupid. We were murdered and nobody want to take any account. For Chinese to say they were not supporting Khmer Rouge is insulting us the victimes many time over.
The Chinese knew that Cambodian were starving to death, but they kept making Pol Pot shipping rice from Cambodia to China anyway. The same way, they knew Cambodian were being killed left and right with no court hearing or anything. What did they do? Nothing. None what so ever. The only few countries that had access to Cambodia between 1975 and 1979 were famously China and north Korea. They had been provided by the Khmer Rouge the luxury of living in a good home and good food to eat whenever they were there. This was the time when millions of Cambodian people could only dreaming. China had never cared to do anything different, but fully supporting the brutal Khmer Rouge Regime with or without knowing it. Smart Chinese? My ass.

I entirely concur with your declaration, and from the bottom of my heart, please allow me to express my deepest gratitude for what your country has done for Cambodia.
I would also like to apologize to the Chinese government and people for all disprectful and demeaning comments about China posted on this blog.
Those disgraceful comments were posted by people who were unaware of what really happend at the times. They DID NOT know that:
1) When the Vietnamese high level delegation visited China in the ealry 70s, the vietnamese leaders informed (Chinese) Premier Chou Eng-Lai about their plan to form indochina federation state. Thankfully, Premier Chou firmly and categorically opposed Hanoi intention;
2) While gravely ill at the hospital, Premier Chou received a visit by KR delegation (Kiev Samphan, Ieng Sary [and Noun Chea ?]). Premeir Chou warned them not to adopt policy that would led people to suffering. The KR leaders did not listen to him.
3) In 1979, (Chinese) Premier Deng Xiaoping gave Pol Pot a "dress down" speech for having caused so much killing and suffering to Cambodian people.
4) In the same year, Premier Deng swiftly went to USA and UN to initiate international condemnation on the Vietnamese invasion, and proposed plan to liberate Cambodia. Without Premier Deng's leadership and initiatives, there would be no Paris Accord.
Throughout my existence, China has never stop helping Cambodia, and Cambodian people can never say thank you enough. Rest assured that Cambodians are grateful people, and we will NEVER forget those who help us.

I see, there are few weird yuon vietcong here who try so hard to trouble the water relating to china’s responsibility. Historical facts rather show that Khmer rouge is a yuon movement handled by yuons to lead genocide against Khmer people. 3:22AM - I was among the first few Khmers came back to Phnom Penh in 1979, and I can tell you for months, I saw so many youns military trucks loaded with troops came to Phnom Pehn every day. Those trucks then left PP loaded with "stuff". Youns were looting our wealths, heritages and cultures in full days light.
The father of my friend (my neighbour) just joined the pupet government and he told us that East German gave us many brand new trucks, and Vietnam "borrowed" those trucks from us to transport some troops and military logistics. But when those trucks reached Hanoi, the yuons took the engines, motors and other gears of the new trucks and replaced them with the old stuff. The father of my friend was so upset that he told his staff not let the Vietnamese borrow our trucks. A few months later, youns arrested him in front of us around lunch time. My family was scared and a few months later after witnessing youns made several other arrests, my family decided to flee to Khao I Dang.

Now the ECCC in Cambodia is indirectly controlled by Vietnamese government through their puppet Mr. Hun Sen/CPP government. CHINA WAS THE MAIN SUPPORTER OF KHMER ROUGE and whoever are their clients are now being charged for genocide. Whereas the Vietnamese clients such as Hun Sen, Chea Sim, Heng Samrin, Hor Nam Hoang, Keat Chhon, Sam Kar, Sar Kheng, Men Sam An and much more who also GENOCIDED millions of Khmers are laughing at CHINA, USA, UN, EU, ECCC all the way to their own individual’s banks.
At this stage USA does not want to save Cambodia from Vietnamese swallowing, so what CHINA must do is to wake up quickly by allying themselves with USA the same way as Mr. Deng Xao Ping did with Mr. Ronald Reagan in 1980’s and rearmed the ex- Khmer Rouge soldiers again to save Cambodia from extinction.
The condition must be attached onto those ex-Khmer Rouge troops, that those troops must be controlled and lead by ex-anti Vietnamese guerrilla’s leaders similar to the recipient of American Silver Cross Medal, Major Sergeant SARUN SAR of the American Special Force and many more of that type who are waiting around the world and inside Cambodia to bring Vietnam and Hun Sen/CPP government to respect the 23rd October 1991 Paris Peace Agreement one more time.
Vietnamese government through their puppet HUN SEN cheated the CHINESE GOVERNMENT, the UNTAC, the USA administrative and the whole Khmer Rouge organization by urging the Khmer Rouge to lay down their arms before 1993 and now control them like slave and master.
Nowadays what CHINA is hoping is to buy out HUN SEN and the whole CPP government with their money, so CHINA can have influence in Cambodia.
Vietnamese will not let HUN SEN go off their hooks so easily like CHINA wants, if HUN SEN does want to escape from Vietnamese jaws, he will receive the same fate as his in-law former police crook-murderer Gen. HOK LUNDY.
Vietnam only allows Hun Sen as a bait to attract investment funds from China, so Vietnam who is Hun Sen’s master, can spare their own funds to buy 6 Sub-Marines and 12 Russian Airplanes to defeat CHINA once more time like in February 1979.
Therefore, the USA and the CHINA were manipulated by Vietnamese government again and again until they took all the South East Asian markets. Recently they took Laos, Cambodia and perhaps Thailand soon when the opportunity arises.
Vietnam smartly took Laos, Cambodia from CHINA and from the USA, and CHINA never dares to challenge Vietnam for CHINA and USA are always incapable to defeat Vietnamese hypocrisy in war or in politics, so CHINA and USA have no choice, but to unite like in 1980’s to stop Vietnam from swallowing Cambodia and to stop Vietnam expansionist strategy toward Thailand too.

I see the life in Democratic Kampuchea like the one described by Reast Khmer because I heard that the Khmer Rouge killed a lot of Chinese-khmer from 75 to 79.
If China had the power to dictate to the Khmer Rouge, China whould have intervened to stop the killing of the chinese-khmer.
China is a source of the killing field. Those little known communist leaders: Pol Pot (Salot Sar) Khieu Samphan, Ieng Sary. Ieng Thirith, Kaing Guec Iev ( Duch), Sihanouk Etc... Have been taught from China. And China was a big supporter of the KR & Sihanouk to fight against Lon Nol who's backed by USA. And the USA. has to back up Lon Nol to gain terrain to withdraw troups from Vietnam at that time. I am 65 years old now and I have been trough all these regimes. China backed up Sihanouk and KR. And the KR is created by Sihanouk. When he ran Sangkum reas niyum, a sole political party, he colored every opponents like Khmer Kraham, Khmer Khieo, Khmer Sichumpoo or Khmer sar etc...

The role of China is this history is widely misunderstood.
A lot of American websites (e.g. Yale) exaggerate the role of China for the same reason that they want to minimize the role of the United States.
China's role was actually defined by their support for Sihanouk (long before 1975): most of you guys don't know what you're talking about, and can't remember the old Chinese propaganda, that made excuses for supporting Sihanouk as a revolutionary prince, while China was actually somewhat hostile toward the Communist Parties of both Vietnam and Cambodia (i.e., due to the Sino-Soviet split, and the question of Russian alliances).
I do notice that a few people writing comments are aware of this history, and that China's realignment in Cambodia took place in response to their pact with the U.S. --however, many of the comments are misled.
Example: the first poster (2:27) says that the Khmer Rouge had AK-47s made in China. The AK-47 is a Russian gun. The Russians were allied with the Vietnamese, and this particular gun is actually evidence for a very different source of support.
Conversely, the fact that the Khmer Rouge had guns made in West Germany, Singapore and the U.S. is evidence of something else again.
A lot of the "new" historical evidence has only been published recently (in English).
