Thai ex-premier Thaksin to make third visit to Cambodia this month

The inseparable lovers can't be kept away from each other for long

Phnom Penh - Thailand's fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra this month is to make his third visit to Cambodia since being named a government adviser as ties between the two nations worsen, local media reported Thursday.

Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong said Thaksin's visit, which comes at a time when Thaksin's supporters in Thailand have vowed to escalate anti-government protests there, was 'not strange.'

'Thaksin coming or going out of Cambodia is a normal thing,' Hor Namhong said, according to the Phnom Penh Post newspaper.

Thailand's Supreme Court is to decide February 26 whether the state would seize 2 billion dollars in frozen bank accounts in Thaksin's and his family's names, a pending decision that has heightened political tensions as Thaksin's supporters were expected to escalate their efforts to topple the Thai government before their leader risks losing his fortune.

Cambodian foreign affairs spokesman Koy Kuong said Thaksin's arrival date and the duration of his stay remained unclear, adding that the former premier would visit in his role as economic adviser.

'We don't know the clear programme exactly, but normally, as an economic adviser, he would [work on tasks] relevant to economic affairs,' Koy Kuong told the German Press Agency dpa Thursday.

He added that he could not predict whether Thaksin would meet with his supporters from Thailand while in Cambodia as he has done on his previous visits but agreed such a meeting would be no surprise.

Cambodia appointed Thaksin, who has a two-year jail sentence still to serve in Thailand for abuse of power, as an adviser to the government and to Prime Minister Hun Sen in October.

Those appointments and Phnom Penh's refusal to extradite Thaksin outraged Bangkok and saw the two neighbours withdraw their ambassadors and senior embassy staff. Neither ambassador has returned, and relations remain tense.

This week, the Cambodian government rejected a demand by Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya that Phnom Penh dismiss Thaksin as an adviser before relations between the two countries could improve.

Hun Sen, who Thursday was celebrating 25 years as Cambodia's prime minister, subsequently predicted the demise of the current administration in Bangkok.

Bangkok considers the appointment of Thaksin, the de-facto opposition leader, as interference in its internal politics, a charge Phnom Penh rejects.

Thaksin was prime minister of Thailand from 2001 to 2006 before being toppled in a bloodless coup. He fled the country and has lived in self-imposed exile, mostly in Dubai, since August 2008.

The relationship between the two members of the Association of South-East Asian Nations has been tense for more than a year with a number of clashes reported between troops from both countries over a disputed piece of land near Preah Vihear temple on the border in northern Cambodia.

It's rediculous for Khmer to welcome Thais at every level. Khmer people got killed by Thai Soldier daily along the border but Khmer security personnel under order from Hun Sen work so hard to provide security for Thai people who crossed border to see Thaksin.
Can anyone see these two events 360 degree different?

1:46PM don't worry too much the whole world know who is Hun Sen, THE STRONG MAN OF CAMBODIA also known as Khmer killer in eastern zone during Pol Pot, and people still voted for him, let them live with that. Now we sense that they want to wage war with Thais so they must be rich. They are not poor as they look.

i doubt there's something to do between hunsen and thaksin, maybe some kind of investment they've been worked together and then suddently blocked by the actual thai governement, after thaksin have been ousted by military force. it seem like an oil's field project at kompong som, that cost hunsen alot $$ once the project was aborted. hunsen supports thaksin, in hope that thaksin will be back to his PM office. thai soldier killed khmer pple, this nothing to do with thaksin and his supporters, these incidents again and again should be blamed on akashit who order it soldier to do so.

I don't really see the benefit of embracing Thaksin by Cambodia. If it's for the future solution of the border issues, then it's fine.

There is no fact/proof yet to establish whether PM Hun Sen has any secret business deals with Thaksin. But if PM Hun Sen did that it will be a big mistake/sin that Khmer will remember for generations and will be written in history book. I really like him to confirm publicly that he and his immediate family members do not have any business deals with Thaksin to clear our doubts.

Hun Sen, why you trust Taksin, he is Thai, it's not a good investment.
Sihanouk trusted Ho Chi Minh in the pass and Yuon swallows Cambodia.
It's better to invest in Khmer ourself like Sam Raingsy, you will not need to go to live in DUBAI, you could possibly stay in Cambodia.

ah kwak causes more problems to cambodia by allowing ah thaksin to control over khmer's head and khmer government. ah thaksin does not like khmers more than thai. ah thaksin will use cambodia and ah stupid kwak as the base to make trouble for thai government. he wants his position back, but he won't. if he goes back to thai he will be killed. thailand 2006 was a military coup. then, the thai military will not let ah thaksin live in peace but die in pain. if thai goes to war with khmers, thai will use ah thaksin as the cause to start war. thai will say they go to war with khmer because they want to get the fugitive who is now living and working in cambodia. just wait and see. i see ah kwak is so different from ah thaksin. ah kwak does not match with ah thaksin, from his background, his look, his peronality and his education. he can not event compare with mee samphoeung sway pak. hope lightning will struck pooch ah kanchas sihanouk, pooch ah kwak and pooch ah thaksin at noon on one summer day.
