Three US congressmen are expected to visit Phnom Penh this week, to discuss trade and the potential cancellation of Cambodian debt, officials in Washington said.
Eni Faleomavaega, a Democrat from American Samoa; Mike Honda, a Democratic from California; and Joseph Cao, a Republican from Louisiana, are expected to hold talks with Cambodian officials from Jan. 5 through Jan. 7, including Prime Minister Hun Sen.
“The purpose of the congressmen to visit Cambodia is, first, they want to help and discuss with our Cambodian leaders to solve Cambodia’s debt owed to the US during the Lon Nol period,” Cambodia’s ambassador to the US, Hem Heng, told VOA Khmer. “And, second, the delegation also wants to tackle how to clear ordnance from US bombing in the 1970s. Third, the delegation wishes to foster trade relations between Cambodia and the US.”
Congressional officials declined to comment on the trip, citing safety concerns. One congressional source told VOA Khmer the three men were visiting Laos, Japan and Vietnam, along with Cambodia.
Cambodia has requested $300 million in debt relief and recently requested tax-free status for garment exports to the US.

Look who their sending.. Low level freshman congress. This is just a media stunt. And Congressman Cao, although a U.S citizen, is viet by birth. But I hope he keeps a fair mind and not let his viet influence take control of him.
He should ask himself and remember who he's working for.

What debt! It is America that should pay Cambodia dept for the thousands of tons of bombing of Khmer people and its fail coup de tat attempt of Sihanouk through Lon Nol as puppet that helped also the rise of KR killing of Khmer and current Vietnam occupation of Cambodia!

Yeah, I agree with 9:o6 AM. I thought they had pay Nol Lon to fight the Vietnammies for them. May be it was for the fanthom soldiers that Lon Nol charged the US for.

The US send three modernize scholars in an attempt to reach out and understand the three knuckle walking caveman who is still stock in prehistoric time. Lol!
The US need to stop and avoid all cost not to get involved with these low life leach. Leave this hell hole country alone and stop wasting my tax money.

Cao doesn't work for Ho! he works for the U.S. and he backed up Mu Soc Hua against Hun Sen government! He's a good congressman!
Does anyone know if SR issue is on the subject for talking? Those group in US should lobby them before they come to Cambodia.
They should help to negotiate to get SR back to Cambodia don't let ah Hun use the kangaroo court as political ploy to silence opposition.
They should also bring Kissinger along to be tried for his war crimes.
Before you start to say MR Kissinger is one of war crimes, first you must bring your former king Sihanouk (paper king) to the UN tribunal court ( Iyou don't remember at all, so I can remember you that, before the Khmer Rouges tribunal created in Cambodia, Sihanouk had always say, he will go to tribunal freely to explain what was up during Pol Pot regime dealed with Killing fields, but now you can see for your eyes he always rejected with this issue, so you all always still respect him? stupid, As a strong leader you who must show the public what you said before, if he don't act then he deal with that is mathematic solution, or he think the khmers are dump stupid? ) and what about Sihanouk with Khmer Rouges?

In fact, Cao helps Mdme Mu,SRP MP in legal process against Hun Sen. (it is ok for Khmer against Khmer) But Cao doesn't want to help Cambodian against VN encroachment Cambodia's land because his country as well. And that's reason he comes to join January 07 with CPP because it is about Khmer and VN friendship at Khmer lose of land.
