For the majority of Cambodians who knew life under the Khmer Rouge regime, they clearly know how miserable it was. Can you all remember that at the end of 1978, Cambodians were almost all dead? Furthermore, in some areas, the Khmer Rouge were planning to kill Cambodians, they ordered the digging of ditches, ponds, then they call in people for a meeting in large forums where they closed all doors, then they exploded mines to kill them. All those who suffered, they all raise their hands to pray so that they would survive during that period.
Those who were killed, nobody saved them from death, those who saved us, be they savage people, ogres, tigers, snakes, ghosts or anything else, those are the ones whom we owe our gratitude.
Therefore, all Cambodians should not misconstrue the celebration of 07 January, at least we celebrate it to commemorate the day we escape death. For any other problems, we should not criticize them, they are not useful for the development of our country, they only bring in dispute, upheaval, worries to the people so that they are concerned and cannot sleep because of the politicians…

I'm not against Venerable Por Vinh. He should do more to raise money for Wat Angkor Chum, rather than talking nonsense about politics. People in Houston would not be happy when they see his message in this blog.

wow, this is so enlighting. khmer form of buddhism is so profound and contain lots of knowledge to guide personal from all walks of life. the way i see it, it's not the khmer buddhist religion that is dangerous for cambodia as some hardcore thinking people are assuming, it the way some people abused it. in reality or the truth, khmer form of buddhism is very sacred and very moral oriented in the doing the right things. i heard from my parents who were old enough to experience and live through cambodia's short lived golden era of sangkum reastr niyum of the then prince norodom sihanouk. according to my parents, who were both educated, khmer buddhism of that time was pure and very real and sacred. they said since the stupid KR regime destroyed cambodia, since, khmer buddhism was being abused, misinterpreted, misunderstood, etc... those who tend to blame our khmer buddhist religion for the creating khmer mentality do not understand the real way of khmer buddhism which in its purest forms deserves respect and reverence and so on, not to mention khmer buddhist pagoda or wat are beautiful khmer architecture in its own way. it's distinctly marks the symbol and icon of khmer architecture, etc... of course, khmer schools should both be modernized and maintain their place in the compound of the pagoda or wat. so, don't blame the religion, it was bad people who abused the system, really!
It is very shameful that Venerable Por Vinh only see the surface of Khmer problems. This is very sensitive issue and it would be best if he said nothing at all.
Agree that a religious person (monk) shall not comment about politic, which would to disrespect the religious person concerned. My intepretation of his meassage here is for everyone to accept the fact (those who have been killed, assuming in 2 millions, and those who are surived until today whether reside in Cambodia or oversease)show our gratitute but he has approached the wrong way.
I am one of the survivor of the brutal regime and I am holding no grudge againgst the regime. Simply to accept it as fact (nightmare for most Cambodians) and move on with life.
The proble we Khmer have is revenge and self-proclaim that one is always better than other politically and socially. I can garantee you that no one is better than other. Why? Political party who is yet become or sit on top job as RGC, they always tell people all the things people would love to hear such as "Eliminate Corruption" Etc.. Do you think that they can eleminate it, the answer is "No" simply because it is a cancer disease in the society as long as I can remember. The leader may be straight foward guy and on't like corruption but he can't give full assuance that his subordinates will be corruption free.
Same as the USA, always talking about Human Rights but they have more human rights abuse than any country. Look at those homeless and those hard hit by Cyclone Katrina for example. When they can have a normal life as those again.
Republic Khmer blamed Sangkum Reastr Niyum, Pol Pot blamed Republic Khmer, then State Cambodia blamed Pol Pot, now people blamed the current RGC - finger pointing game seemed to have not slow down at all.
When can we stop this finger poiting game? I personally think that it is about time we should have a common goal by urging all political parties to work together and protect what we have left.
The truth is all political parties can nagging about one another but by the end of the day Cambodia and its people will loose tremendously and neighbouring countries will laugh their way to the bank with economic windfall.
