We agreed that we shot each other due to misunderstanding (sic!): Khmer and Thai army commanders

Misunderstanding leads to Thai-Cambodian border clash: Thai, Cambodian armies

BANGKOK, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Thai and Cambodian army officers agreed after meeting that the clash earlier Sunday between their military patrols in an area claimed by both countries was caused by misunderstanding, Thai News Agency reported.

According to the report, Col Thanet Wongcha-um, chief of staff of the commander for the Suranaree Task Force and Col Thawatchai Changprachak, commander of a special unit from Thailand's Ranger Forces Regiment 23 on Sunday met Maj-Gen Srey Doek, commander of Cambodia's 3rd Reinforcement Division at an operation base in Kantharalak district following the clash, in which two Thai soldiers wounded.

The one-hour meeting agreed that the clash, having occurred early Sunday near the two bordering countries disputed area, the ancient Preah Vihear temple, was caused by misunderstanding and that soldiers of both sides will withdraw from areas near the clash site and return to their bases first, waiting for officials of the two countries will meet again Monday to discuss patrol issues in overlapping areas.

Lt-Col Nut Sri-in, commander of Suranaree Task Force Unit 163, earlier Sunday said the fighting took place while a group of Thai Army Rangers were patrolling and confronted Cambodian soldiers who were felling trees in Kantharalak district, SI SA KET province, which borders Cambodia.

As the Rangers shouted at the Cambodian soldiers asking their purpose in crossing over to the area, the Cambodian soldiers fired M79 grenades and automatic rifles at them, Col. Nut said.

The troops exchanged gunfire for over 20 minutes before the Cambodian soldiers withdrew into Cambodia, he said.

To all,

For all lovers and defenders of Khmer and Cambodia, especialy those in the Cambodian armed forces now protecting Cambodian territory on the borders, please use your weapons to shoot any intruders trepassing Cambodian borders and never ever let them enter into our lands in the first place--if you really don't want headaches and heartaches in dealing with the Thais.

Please just shoot them the same way as they always do to our poor people crossing the contested borders.

By shooting them in the first place, we are in good position to protect our territory from being encroached easily as always has been the case.

Thanks for your noble job of defending our country!
