Phnom Penh - Cambodian authorities used a bulldozer to crush 400,000 CDs and DVDs in a crackdown on piracy, national media reported Wednesday. Police drove the machine over the pile of counterfeit discs that were stacked on the road outside Wat Phnom, the capital's landmark Buddhist temple.
The Cambodia Daily newspaper reported that the discs were either pirated copies of local music and films, or foreign pornographic movies. Most were confiscated from shops in and around Phnom Penh.
Kong Kantara, an under-secretary of state at the Ministry of Culture, told the newspaper that the authorities have stepped up efforts to combat piracy of intellectual property.
"In 2008 we destroyed only 100,000 CDs and DVDs, but [in 2009] we cooperated closely with the Ministry of Interior to raid every pirating place that steals content from film companies," he said.
"We did not arrest offenders, but we fined them according to the copyright law because they pirated the CDs and DVDs from the [rightful] owners," Kong Kantara added.
Under Cambodian law vendors who sell counterfeit discs face fines of around 2 US dollars per disc if they are caught. The authorities said they plan to expand the crackdown across the country.
Movie and music piracy is commonplace in Cambodia, and many shops openly sell copies of both foreign and local movies and CDs for between 1 and 2 dollars apiece.

Cambodian authority always blames domestic violent or raping on things like porn DVD or Movie but they never think the root cause because of corrupted society, low moral and weak law excecution.
Let see will be any more rape or violent happen again after all these porn DVD's were destroyed?
It is good that the you the government has the action of cracking down on VCDs and DVDs piracy. I am happy to see that. But, how many stores that your men have raided in Phnom Penh, not to mention nationawide? It is just a child play by this. Why you still allow those VCDs to be imported to Cambodia. What is the work of customs official? Is it difficult job for you to do that? You see the snakes in its hole but you let them slither uncontrollably in all parts of the forest and then you just go look for them. This is the way that competent leaders work? This kind of work can only get the admiration or satisfaction from the ignorant who are fooled by you men. Do you must raid on the shops selling pirated VCDs or DVDs like this forever?

And they used a counterfeit bulldozer from China to crush the DVDs.
And how many porno VCD/DVD that policemen have kept for themselves.
More than 3500 porno movies have been consficated but only 1350 VCD/DVD turned out to be destroyed. The rest were only piracy copy violation movies.
Hey and Hey those policemen and official must have good time with their wives and mistresses.
This is another transparent kow-tow to a foreign resquest. Last time it was china asking to deport the uyghurs, before their visit. This time the US is asking about intellectual property protection for hollywood. Before their congressional visit.
Shame on CPP for such blatant money-grubbing.
Shame on the US for such mercantilism.
I pray the debts will NOT be forgiven, and the US means what it says about the Uyghur deportation having "long term consequences".
