Cambodia to draft new law against acid attacks

Phnom Penh, Feb 4 (AP) - Cambodia plans to draft a new law in a bid to stop the growing number of attacks in which jealous wives, vengeful businessmen and others have hurled acid at their rivals, a government official said today.

More than 10 people were assaulted with acid in 2009, and three last month alone, according to statistics from a non government group that helps victims of the attacks.

"For the attackers, using acid to attack their opponents is very easy, not hard to keep and hide like guns," said Deputy Minister of Interior Teng Savong.

Acid attackers are currently tried under the general criminal law, and Teng Savong said that due to the increasing number of attacks, specific legislation with heavy punishments was needed to curb such vicious acts.

In recent years, the majority of acid attacks have stemmed from marital and business disputes.

it's about time, overdue, i mean. cambodia needed badly so bad people can get away so easily. hey, don't be so barbaric like during the dark ages, ok. nowadays, there to fine or punish you bad boys and girls out there for throwing acid at others! of course, it took a lot of incidents like this for people to wake up, really! we all either learn the easy way or the hard way. pick one, ok! god bless cambodia.

Charging criminal with acid attack is not enough!! Mostly the attackers are wealthy so even if they do get charge, they will get off easily because money speak more powerful than law. First off, why would Cambodia sell acid? it should be only be available in medical field, use only by the medical practitioner. They should ban acid seller!!

1:49,
stop your bs. But I want to see the government doing a lot more to curve acid attack. It is cruel to condone this kind of behavior. Let's have some moral values and decencies in our society.

1:49AM was not condoning the criminal who used the acid to attack. And he made good point that acid selling must be banned.

even bail bond from rich people is not enough with the law, they must also face jail time if found associated and guilty. cambodian/khmer society should not tolerate such heineous act action other human being in cambodia, really! again, having law is better because you rich or not, when you have to go to court, you will be humiliate in the present of society and nation watching you. believe it or not, humility can shape a person's act appropriately, really! think about it ok!
