Meas Sokchea regrets the "yuon" controversy

Below is Mr. Sokchea Meas' e-mail to Khmerization after my letter to the Phnom Penh Post rebuking the definition of the word "yuon" as a racist epithet in describing the Vietnamese people.

-------------------------------------------

Thank you for your criticizing, but I regret that you have not been thoughtful about the news. I recognize that this article was reported by me as a reporter but I did not use the word Yuon and did not add in phrase “racist epithet for the Vietnamese.” This word and this phrase were written by the editor. I have requested him to use the word Vietnam in the bracket [Vietnam] instead of Yuon but he did not listen to me.

Best regards,

Meas Sokchea

Reporter for PP Post

fair enough, but you still cop it.

In light of Mr. Meas Sokchea explanation, it appears that the Dumbass PP Post editor was the one who pretended to know more about Khmer language than Khmer people and wanted to stir trouble for Cambodia. I suggest that PP Post Editor should take Khmer culture courses before printing sensitive materials that could cause harm to relations between Cambodia and Vietnam.

In Cambodia we have:

HUN YUON...(Supheap Boros Neak Leng)
This dude gets a C+ for defending the Western borders (with Siem), an F for the Eastern borders (with Yuon)

SIEM RAINSY...(Supheap Boros Komsak Nhee)
This dandy gets a B- for his efforts defending the Eastern borders (with Yuon), a D for his silence on the Western borders (with Siem)

Translation to the above Khmer post:

The word "Yuon" means "alligator" and "low class people". This is the reason why they do not want anyone to call them as such.

This "Yuon" term, the CPP party members dare not say it because it is their Boss. Therefore, there is no need for a lengthy explanation.

--from a Khmer Krom, the owner of the current Viet land in the Mekong delta region.

The trem YUON is not always derogative and racist. At Kien Svay people called a respectable women, former wife of late Governemnt official LAY SAMON, Yeay YUON or Grandma Yuon.

Every saint day she goes to the pagoda to pay respect to the monks and offers them food. That makes people at Kien Svay appreciate her and love her.

The called her Yeay YUON by sympathy, friendship and estime.
Yeay Yuon doesn´t feel hurt by the name Yuon. She speaks fluently the Khmer and is well integrated with the Khmer Community at Kien Svay.

WHO HAS HIS FATHER WAS WORKING FOR BEFORE HE WAS TAKEN TO BE KILLED. SAM RAINSY HAS BEEN IN CAMBODIAN POLITICS FOR MORE THAN A DECADE AND HE IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE.
Do you know why?
Because he is gay and has a small dick, now only straight and big dick people can run the government.

Sokchea, sorry to see that you are taking the heat and blames because of your ignorant editor. He is probably a racist himself who want to make Khmers look bad in the eyes of the world.

Your editor should come out in public and apologize to you for putting you in such an unfortunate position.

The word "yuon" has been used by Burmese, Lao, Thais and others to call the Vietnamese people. It is a neutral word, not a racist epithet as claimed the ignorant PPPost editor.

Go to the ANTS you who love to google about Khmer small dicks. The ant is more wiser than you are, even though it is very small in size. Every one of us should observe the ways of the ants and see how organized they are in working together without a boss. Very wise creator!

Meas Sokchea is off the hook, now we have to go after the EDITOR of the PPP. What is wrong with you, azzhole? Who gives you the damn right to tell the Khmer folks what words they can use and cannot use in their very OWN language, mather f*cker!!!! How much knowledge do you know about the Khmer pronoun words, azzhole. The term YOUN is a Khmer native term used for the the Vietnamese, fool. Similarly, the YOUNs they call the Khmer as Ca-Mien or Mien and sh*t. We don't complain as long as it is a neurtal term. Even Hun Sen and the CPP members themselves use the term YOUN to refer to the Vietnamese, fool. Are you going to censor the Khmer folks from calling the Thais as "Siems" and the Lao as "Liev" and the Chinese as "Chen" and the French as "Barang" and the Americans as "AhKieng" too. Guess what, the YOUNs (Viets) don't even call you Americans by the term "American", but by their own Viet name word instead, azzhole. So are you going to censor them too? Stupid mather f*cking EDITOR! At time like this and you have to be a cock sucker to the YOUNs? If you like sucking the YOUNs' cocks that much, why do you establish your newspaper in Cambodia for? What a disgusginng matther f*cker you really are!

I just Googled and 95% of Khmer men has small brains. That's why they ran away like rabbits hiding in the USA and France while their country is plundered and raped by the Viets and Siems. All they do is curse and grunt "fuck this, fuck that".
That is how small-brain Khmer men speak. They are truly the most pathetic group of men on the planet.

I thought only Hun Sen is YUON puppet but now foreigner experts in Khmer language are YUON puppet too. Did YUON paid them to blame and criticize Sam Raingsy phrase.

The Vietnamese government teaches its puppet government in Cambodia to call its people as Viet Nam. But 90% of the Khmer Krom in South Vietnam call the Vietnamese as YOUN. They never call Vietnamese as Viet Nam.

Recently, the Vietnamese government uses all kind of tactics to make the Khmer Krom call its people as Viet nam just like the Khmer in Cambodia. So far, the Vietnamese government does not succeed it because only the Khmer Krom who work for the Vietnamese government call the Vietnamese people as Viet Nam. Even Son Song Son who has a very high rank representing Khmer Krom in the Vietnamese government, still call Vietnamese as YOUN because the Khmer Krom used to it.

If you ask the Vietnamese people, 99% of the Vietnamese call Khmer or Khmer Krom as "Mien" that make Khmer and Khmer Krom not happy, but we never think that it is racist.

The conclusion is: Keep calling them YOUN, period.

FRENCH GOVERNMENT ADVOCATES RESPECT FOR POLITICAL PLURALISM AND DEMOCRATIC DEBATE IN CAMBODIA
Responding on January 28 to a question from French parliamentarian Chantal Brunel, Chairperson of France-Cambodia Friendship Group at the French National Assembly, Foreign Affairs State Secretary Pierre Lellouche declared that the Paris government is “preoccupied” by the situation facing the opposition Sam Rainsy Party in Cambodia.
Besides the case of SRP leader Sam Rainsy who has been recently prosecuted, the French government is also “worried” about the removal of the parliamentary immunity of Ho Vann and Mu Sochua, two other National Assembly members from the SRP
About the recurrent lifting of opposition parliamentarians’ immunity and their subsequent trials, which the French government “deplores,” State Secretary Pierre Lellouche said, “We cannot accept these practices, which pertain to intimidation.” He stressed the importance that France attaches to the “respect for political pluralism and democratic debate” in Cambodia.

In conclusion, the French government will continue to pay “close attention” and to “actively follow” the situation facing the opposition in Cambodia.

There shouldn't be a big deal about "Yuon" if you are a real Khmer, and not the Yuon slaves, but if you are, No can't help!

Neither Meas Sokchea, nor the Post editor is wrong of using this. The editor may think that Youn never want us to call them Youn that is why the editor use this as a racist word. Apology to them. I am not biased toward anyone. I like to call Youn not Viet Nam, but when I see the editor used this as "racist", I feel it is like this.
However, my conclusion is keep calling Youn because this term we have used for years and years.
I believe the Post editors will learn from what all of you have commented them. Continue to read the Post is to get in touch with breaking news, sensitive and professional media in Cambodia. I expect the editors in the future will not add more comment or additional description to reporter's story.

Sam Rainsy and his supporters are khmer nationalist. cpp officials and their supporters are yuon's slave and therefore disgrace. but some anonymous group derogatorily attack both cpp and Sam rainsy. this group is worse than the disgrace one. If sam rainsy is not good for you, whoelse. find one you like and support. random or crazy attack is just a waste of your time. it did not serve any purpose. I support Sam Rainsy, at least in my heart. He is the best khmer nationalist I ever see. He is educated, intelligent, and dedicating his work and even his life trying to save Cambodia from being swallowed by Yuon. you pretend that you know sam Rainsy's father, sam Sari. you are bragging. regardless of Sam sari's polotical stories. Mr. Sam Rainsy's fucus is bout Cambodia being under Yuon 's control. In a long term plan of yuon cambodia will be lost in the name of identity and/or land. If you are yuon and attack Sam Rainsy, I do not blame you, but if you are khmer, support Khmer nationalists of your choice.

Dude, this is something you should learn from. You have to be strong in what you write and what you believe in your professionalism as the right things to do or write. If you as a writer cannot have a final say on your own article, how can you put your name on the article and finally point finger to the editor. Don't publish it if you believe it is not what you meant to write.

Anonymous said...

yes, writer is still responsible even after editor edits the article. so, when write like meas sokchea failed to reread and have final saying which he supposed to know better that it's not correct as in his own conveying of message, meas sokchea should point that out and refuse to write his name next to it. and as for the editor, he may or may not use meas sokchea, a khmer as a scapegoat. editor is probably the boss and the owner of phnom penh post, thus meas sokchea is probably afraid to confront his boss. anyway, i just guess, here.

as for the editor, whoever he/she may be, should start taking khmer lessons in culture, language, history and so forth. after all that will and should serve him/her well as the phnom penh post is in cambodia. have some local sensitivity in mind, please! you are the host, really. thank you.

Anonymous said...

11:06 AM and 11:31 AM, Sokchea Meas cannot overrule his boss, the editor, or he will get the sack. People who work anywhere know this that your boss has the final say. I consider Sokchea to be a bit brave in coming out to denounce his boss. I hope he won't get into trouble for this.

Mr. Phnom Penh Post Editor, Michael Hays, should issue a front page apology to the Khmer people! If not, go home! We certainly do NOT need your 'foreign expertise' on the term 'Yuon' and tell khmer how to speak their own language.

" Youn" is commonly by Khmers for years. It is not an insulting word. However, our current government seems to think it is a bad work..soon we will all call "Youn" your highness and your majesty just like we all calling Hun Sen, samdech....I will keep calling..Yuon..yuon..yuon..my kids will learn that khmers call Vietnamese..yuon..
