The opposition Sam Rainsy Party has no plans to change its name back to the original Khmer Nation Party, an official said Wednesday, following the legal release of the original in January.
The name of the Khmer Nation Party was tangled up in legal proceedings after the splintering from the opposition of Kong Muny, who claimed the name and spurred the renaming of the Sam Rainsy Party.
Last month, Kong Muny relinquished his rights to the name, which would allow the opposition to revert to its original at a time where both the Sam Rainsy and Human Rights parties are joined in a loose coalition against the ruling Cambodian People’s Party.
“There is not any decision, besides welcoming and accepting,” Kong Muny said Wednesday.
Kong Muny is a former founder of the Khmer Nation Party, the precursor to the Sam Rainsy Party, but he now oversees the Khmer Angkor Party, which is aligned with the CPP.
He said he was giving up rights to the KNP name “for the national interest.”
Opposition leader Sam Rainsy has come under pressure to change the name of his party before the opposition contests national parliamentary elections in 2013, according to a senior party member who asked not to be named. The Sam Rainsy Party currently holds 26 seats in the National Assembly, followed by the Human Rights Party, which has three. The CPP has 90.
The official said the name of the Khmer Nation Party could be used, but reclaiming the name could also cause rifts or weakening in the opposition. A similar split happened to Funcinpec, the official said, when Prince Norodom Ranariddh split from the party and formed his own eponymous party.
Chea Vannath, an independent political analyst, said the return of the party name could be an incentive for Sam Rainsy, but she warned that a party is not elected on its name alone but on its policies. She also questioned the usefulness of merging parties.
Meanwhile, Sam Rainsy remains in self-imposed exile, facing a two-year jail sentence for racial incitement and the destruction of property if he returns to Cambodia.

In America, they going to make another big party too. It is called the Tea Party. Some American got sick and tired of the two major parties named Republican and Democrat.

Sam Rainsy must change the name of the party. It's don't look good to put your name to run a country.
Name change or not should not be important. Party name is not important. What important is who truly help the people and the nations. Who work for the interest of Cambodia and Cambodians.
I a tired to hear HRP want merging with SRP. Seriously, what have HRP done? HRP never dare to say a word on YOUN border encroachment. HRP never say a word when MR. Sam Rainsy, Mrs. Mu Sochua and Mr. Ho Vann immunity unconstitutionally lifted by Natinal Assembly. HRP never say a word with all the land evictions going on. Kem Sokha is already owned by the traitor CPP before he released from Prey Sar jail. His brother is already with CPP after 08 election. Kem Sokha also have long long corruptions history when he was with CHHIR.
I agree SRP and others opposition party to united as one. But only if the other party is true intention of the interest of the people and the nation.
Kem Sokha, HRP is exist under CPP nose to distract SRP. Therefore, I think it make no sense for SRP to allow this bacteria "HRP" to infect the inner organs.

Can someone explain when HRP oppose CPP? Kem Sokha never dare to speak up against CPP in the National Assembly meeting.

You're correct about party name is not important. The important is the policy, guildline (Justice,Integrity,Liberty and Rights).

All others party aligned with the CPP. It is obvious because no opposition party support SRP in this sensitive issues of YOUN border ecroachment. Therefore they all exist under CPP nose. Especially HRP. They are CPP's puppet with a mission to distract SRP. Too obvious! How else Kem Sokha able to form his clan, HRP so easily after he released from Prey Sar jail. Also his brother is with CPP since after 08 election.
Honestly, I do not trust Kem Sokha! Expecailly with his long long corruptions when he was with CHHIR.
Now his corruptions case is silent. I really think CPP released him from jail for a reason. A reason to distract SRP.

The Sam Sary Affair
Sam Sary was a Cambodian politician who participated in the so-called Bangkok Plot against Prince Norodom Sihanouk[1]. He was a son of Sam Nhean, a prominent politician in the 1940s and father of Sam Rainsy, presently a leader of the main Cambodia's opposition party. He was a close confidant of the then Prince Norodom Sihanouk but had a fall-out with the Prince when he was exposed in corruption, selling import licenses and a second time during his tenure as a Cambodian ambassador to London in 1958, for beating his impregnated female housemate. He was alleged to have beaten her so badly that she escaped to the protection of the London police. The scandal made headlines in the London tabloids and he was recalled to Cambodia and stripped of all of his duties. [2]He disappeared mysteriously in 1962, presumably killed by the government or CIA agents, whom he was working for.
He was involved in election fraud and intimidations
In January 1958 Sam Sary was appointed by Norodom Sihanouk as Cambodia's ambassador to London, thus extricating him from a scandal involving smuggling of large quantities of high grade Cambodian pepper.[2] According to Time Magazine he brought an entourage of four woman who were his official wife, with their five children, including Sam Rainsy and three mistresses. Six months later Sam Sary was involved in another scandal when one of his female servants--Iv Eng Seng, who bore him a child went to the London police accusing him of severely beating her for "minor mistakes".[2] By other accounts her name was Soeung Son Maly and she used to date Saloth Sar (Pol Pot) later dumping him for more prosperous Sam Sary.[3] Sam Sary was recalled back to Phnom Penh, but not before he had put his side of the story to the British press. He admitted beating his servant,saying:
I corrected her by hitting her with a Cambodian string whip. I never hit her on the face, always across the back and the thighs—-a common sort of punishment in my country.
He argued his right to do so because
the embassy is "Cambodia in London."
After coming back to Cambodia Sam Sary became more and more anti-Sihanouk. Despite the risk of incurring Sihanouk's displeasure Sam Sary started a newspaper, openly critical of the Prince's policies. He tried to start his own political party but without success. His anti-Sihanouk activities were dubbed the Sam Sary Affairs.
Some commentators agree that Sam Sary worked with US Intelligence services, which he might have contacted in 1956 while visiting the US. On 13 January 1959 in speech delivered in Kampong Cham Sihanouk told his listeners that he knew about US intelligence plots to overthrow him. While this speech had not clearly implicated Sam Sary, a week after the speech was delivered he fled to Thailand. After a shadowy existence in exile he disappeared in 1962, probably put to death by his foreign paymasters. 1[1]

That was why Sihanouk cut tie with the US. The US deposed of the S.Vietnamese leader, Sihanouk thought he was next.

any political party uses the person's name is not good for it seems to say that person is all about himself. a smart political party's name should be a neutral, national name, not a living person's name like sam rainsy party, etc... not a good reflection on that party. think about it!
7:48PM What you said was what believed then. Does not mean its the truth. In those day people trust and only believe Sihanouk. Anybody oppose him is considered traitor at his time. Just like Mr. Sam Rainsy opposing Hun Sen today. But today is a lot different. Better technology and better education. People don't always believe one side to the story like Sihanouk era.

1:04PM I agree 100%. SRP is the name that was accepted by the people a decade and a half ago. People support and voted for SRP to stand the largest opposition party against traitor CPP.
