Police finish documentation for Khmer Krom deportees

“I request that Vietnamese reconsider the stopping of the freedom to access media ... The Cambodian government ... allows the Vietnamese government and its people the right to set up broadcasting through Cambodia” - SRP MP Ho Vann
DOCUMENTATION necessary for members of a group of Khmer Krom seeking Cambodian citizenship has been completed, a police official said Wednesday, amid fears that the 22 men, women and children who were deported from Thailand last year will lose the financial support of the NGO sheltering them at the end of the month.

Information for the individuals that was originally collected in January was sent to district authorities Wednesday, said commune Police Chief Tep Bora.

“The documents are complete now,” he said. “Before, it was difficult because the documents lacked information.”

The group was deported from Thailand as illegal immigrants after fleeing Vietnam, where they said they endured constant religious repression.

The asylum seekers have been waiting for formal identification from authorities since arriving in the Kingdom.

The identification cards are crucial for the group to visit hospitals, gain employment, enrol in schools and rent houses.

Five of the original group of 24 have returned to Thailand since December, fed up with government inaction regarding the issuing of the cards.

But a further three have since been deported by Thai authorities and have joined the group at Meanchey district’s Boeung Tumpun commune, where they have been assisted by the rights group Licadho.

Khmer Krom representative Thach Soong, 49, said Tuesday the group is still concerned about the lack of information it has received regarding the processing of the ID cards.

“We have completed the documents to send to the commune office and district office, but we have not heard any information,” he said. “We are still waiting to get legal [recognition] in Cambodia because we want to find jobs to support ourselves.”

He said that time is running out for the deportees, as Licadho can support them only until the end of February, and that their rent will run out at the end of March. “We are concerned about living. We have no jobs,” he said.

Vietnamese crackdown
In the meantime, Vietnamese authorities have banned Khmer Krom in Vietnam from watching television or listening to radio broadcasts from Cambodia, activists said, just a day after Cambodia’s Ministry of Information granted permission to the Khmer Kampuchea Krom Association (KKA) to produce programme ideas for state radio stations.

Thach Setha, director of KKA, said he had received word from Khmer Krom living in Vietnam that they had been warned against listening to or watching Cambodian broadcasts.

“Vietnamese authorities have released a written prohibition ... banning all Khmer Krom from watching TV and listening to radio from Cambodia,” he said, adding that Vietnamese authorities were patrolling around Khmer Krom houses and some pagodas. Violators “can face a savage fine of up to 10 million dong (US$535)”.

Sam Rainsy Party lawmaker Ho Vann criticised the prohibition as “racial discrimination”.

“I request that Vietnamese reconsider the stopping of the freedom to access media,” he said. “The Cambodian government ... allows the Vietnamese government and its people the right to set up broadcasting through Cambodia.”

A spokesman from the Vietnamese embassy in Cambodia could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Folks,

I'm tired of hearing talks but not actions/solutions. Can we get together and set up some fund to help these folks and may be asking Western countries to let them in?

Thanks,

cambodia should demand from viet/youn gov't a balance because if cambodia allow viet/youn to learn their language, set up school and listening to radio, music, broadcast, etc in cambodia, then viet/youn gov't should allow the same for khmer krom people. i never see cambodia prohibit viet/youn from having their freedom in cambodia. why then is viet/youn gov't only do it to khmer krom? that's not right, really!

silly to try to topple a legitimate gov't of cambodia! i mean, demanding changes or reforms is one thing, but toppling or ousting a legitimate gov't from power is something else, a dangerous game to fool with, really! and people know it's probably sam rainsy maverick idea! again, a minority party is trying to force a majority party into stepping down so they can illegally claim their seat? now tell me what is wrong with this picture? or maybe something is wrong with their brain! are they crazy and stupid like siem pad thugs? go figure!

If Cambodia government led by Lok Chum Teav PM Hun Sen doesn't help Khmer Krom people to live in Cambodia, what do you think to ask other countries to help? Make nonsense.

Lok Chum Teav Hun Sen helps Youn to live in Cambodia and gives them citizenship by million, but Khmer Krom don't have that right. See how good our dear leader is. Asshole Hun Sen and Sihamony!! They work for Youn completely.

Why Khmer doesn't help Khmer and let Youn Vietcong do whatever they want to Khmer people? We called them Ah Pleur Khmer leaders. They kiss Youn's ass and make Khmer suffer.

Don't tell me Ah Hun Sen and CPP are good care takers. The people who support them are those who are blind and uneducated persons.

Kill Youn and CPP members.

You sound like a dummy person. Who toppled whom? Do you think Hun Sen is a legitimate government elected by the people? 110% wrong. He toppled the elected government by coup d'etat. Do you remember?

He was elected by fraud and stealing the votes. To me he is a crook and dictator and ruled by itimidation, killing, imprison, etc... Now he kicked out the legitimate party led by Sam Rainsy.

So don't tell me Hun Sen is a good leader. He is an asshole guy and the same way as our gay king.

CPP members,
you could be Yuon dogs,
you could be Yuon slaves,
and you could at the same time help Khmers.
Do not forget your blood.
After all Yuons will harm your grand children in the future.

12:31AM,

If the government doesn't care about these folks, and the average Khmers in Cambodia can not help, should we Khmers oversea give a hand? Stop talking and instead soliciting some actions would help these folks, don't you agree? I hope you do care about our Khmer Krom folks!

Khmer Krom don't need to apply the permanent residence in Cambodia. Cambodia is their land and they have the right to live in their country. They shall not have to apply for the green card as other foreigners.

Hun Sen shall be stripped off his Cambodian citizenship and applies Youn citizen. He is 110% Youn Vietcong. He shall not be Cambodian as his other CPP members.

Robed land, constantly tortured, maltreated and massacred by yuons, maltreated and chased by Siamese, hope they can at least find a place to live. Ah yuons, ah Siamese, Thailand, Kampuchea krom (sude viekna) are these people ancestors land, these people have rights to live on the land of their ancestors, damn you robbers and assassins.

Anonymous said...

May be hun kvang can do something to help these people. After all Cambodia is also their land. They must have much rights than yuons who are invaders, colonizers, aggressors and assassins

How about French’s responsibilities for delivered these people to be tortured, maltreated and killed by yuons? French did know that yuons have much hatred, animosity toward these people, that yuons want to exterminated all these people to rob land and resources. French must also hold for responsible of act of cruelty and massacre of Khmer krom by yuons.

the way i see it, people in cambodia tend to depend too much on gov't for assistance, etc... i think for a change, people should demand change, instead of waiting for gov't to do it for them. i mean, gov't is there to help people, however, even gov't sometimes need people to help themselves as well. remember what former president kennedy of the USA said: ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country! now, don't tell me we can't learn from this wise philosophy. wake up already! also, stop whining too much because that's all we're hearing here, whining! instead, why not make demand that if viet/youn gov't don't want cambodia to ban their people living in cambodia the freedom, the rights, etc, then they too better treat khmer krom people fairly! if this is the only way to get them to wake up and see the world as well, then, be it! we demand it by protesting to their embassy and consulate in cambodia so in turn they can relay these messages to their viet/youn gov't to treat khmer krom minority right and fairly! it is real simply than just bitching and whining to no avail. or is it political motives involves? hey, khmer people may be ignorant due to lack of education, but we're not stupid or retarded, really! know the difference between stupid and ignorant, ok. they're not the same meaning, you know!

Anonymous said...

let this be a lesson for cambodia too. if we fail to care or ignorant these khmer krom families plight, then it reflects on the insensitive or ineffective leadership of gov't in cambodia. so, let's don't let our people down. they obviously need help. please give them support and guidance, etc...

Anonymous said...

also, when people are not happy or satisfied with gov't inaction, one way they show their discontent is by demonstration or protest, the louder, the better. that said, now demonstration and protest don't necessarily be violent in nature, it could be a peaceful protest like meditation, like fasting, like recruiting more supports for the cause, etc, etc... by smart about it, violence don't solve violence. be educated to know that there are many many many many ways to do something, get rid of such thing as only one way, or the concept of absolutism, etc... there is no such thing as absolute anything anymore, really! nothing is impossible if we set our mind to it, you know!

Anonymous said...

yes, and absolutely no procrastinating is allowed because that is a bad habit. get rid of it! act fast, be vigilent. do everything expeditiously. it is better, really! don't be lazy, be competitive from now on. our country needed this! learn to think for yourselves as well, etc, etc... just because someone jumps off the cliff, you don't have to do the same, really! that's called thinking for yourselves, ok!

Anonymous said...

Vietnamese and Thai always ask why we khmer hate them so much? Is because they always do dumb shit. The Vietnamese are professional at playing the victim. Especially how they turn the neutral word "Youn" into a political one. It seems Cambodia can never catch a break. We get blame for everything. Khmer Krom have no freedom in Vietnam. Vietnamese have more rights in Cambodia than the Cambodian themselves.

Everyone in Cambodia should make posters directly aiming at Hun Sen. On those posters it should say " Either give us a new Cambodia or a new prime minister"

Anonymous said...

hunsen cpp is yuon's puppet, yuon slaves.

Anonymous said...

yes, protest is one way to get the attention and message across. believe it or not, silence is very dangerous, make a real differene by standing up together to protest or voice our concerns. just avoid using violence, though! by all mean protest for a change, ok!

KI Media,
Can you please set up a fund, so that KI Fans and others can donate money to help these poor Khmer Krom people who are obviously being ignored and are given the run around by the CPP government of Cambodia. I would like to donate and I'm sure many feel the same way!
