Below is Mr. Sokchea Meas' e-mail to Khmerization after my letter to the Phnom Penh Post rebuking the definition of the word "yuon" as a racist epithet in describing the Vietnamese people.
-------------------------------------------

Thank you for your criticizing, but I regret that you have not been thoughtful about the news. I recognize that this article was reported by me as a reporter but I did not use the word Yuon and did not add in phrase “racist epithet for the Vietnamese.” This word and this phrase were written by the editor. I have requested him to use the word Vietnam in the bracket [Vietnam] instead of Yuon but he did not listen to me.

Best regards,

Meas Sokchea

In Cambodia we have:

HUN YUON...(Supheap Boros Neak Leng)
This dude gets a C+ for defending the Western borders (with Siem), an F for the Eastern borders (with Yuon)

SIEM RAINSY...(Supheap Boros Komsak Nhee)
This dandy gets a B- for his efforts defending the Eastern borders (with Yuon), a D for his silence on the Western borders (with Siem)

In light of Mr. Meas Sokchea explanation, it appears that the Dumbass PP Post editor was the one who pretended to know more about Khmer language than Khmer people and wanted to stir trouble for Cambodia. I suggest that PP Post Editor should take Khmer culture courses before printing sensitive materials that could cause harm to relations between Cambodia and Vietnam.

I wonder if Mr. Hun Sen has anything to say if the Vietnamese plant a border post at his front yard...

If the illegal border posts in Chantrea district, Svay Rieng province which encroached several hundred meters inside Cambodia does NOT bother Mr. Hun Sen...HOW CAN THE PEOPLE OF CAMBODIA CONTINUE TO VOTE AND ELECT SUCH A PERSON TO REPRESENT THEM???

Anonymous said...

I don't know if that PPP editor is printing his newspaper in Vietnam or Cambodia?

Which country is working under?
Or does he think Cambodia already became Vietnamization?

Please advise!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Soon or later we (YOUN) will plant a border POST in front of HUN SEN's house then move on to his PM's palace.

If word "YUON" is racist change it to "JO PREY" and the Vietnamese do not want to hear it, all the Vietnamese must get out of Cambodia and never come back. And they will never hear again if you are outside of Cambodia. As long as the Vietnamese are living Cambodia they will hear it every day. JO PREY cannot our shut mouth, we the rights to protect and defend our country.

Whoever criticize the word "YUON" they should have something else to do instead of wasting time to analyze, apologize, blaming on each other to please A JO PREY. Khmer used word "YUON" before Annam became Vietnam. So take a break and forget about it. It will change nothing and do nothing so stop blaming on each other.

Translation to the above Khmer post:

The word "Yuon" means "alligator" and "low class people". This is the reason why they do not want anyone to call them as such.

This "Yuon" term, the CPP party members dare not say it because it is their Boss. Therefore, there is no need for a lengthy explanation.

Hello people, don't waste your time argue about the word Youn. It doesn't matter about the word, but the intention of the person who use this word. In most case, when Khmer use the word Youn, instead of their official name Viet or Vietnamese, we want to express our hatred and disgust about this savage and tricky people. That is pure and simple.

The word Youn now is not neutral any more. Any Khmer who are honest would tell you that when they use the word Youn instead of Vietnamese is to express their hatred and disgust about this people.

Good one, At Keo!

Anonymous said...

Rural Cambodians still call the Vietnameses YUON, not because of racist reason, but because they used to do so.

Anyway the word " YUON" is derogative or non -derogative depend on the honesty or dis-honesty of the people who used it.

For the meal there a sour Soup, called MCHOU YUON. Calling
" MCHOU Vietnam" is not understandable.

stupid khmer make sour soup ,but can not give a name know how to eat only

I also wrote a protest email and I received the same response as Khmerizaton, from Meas Sokchea. He stated that he asked them not to use the words, but they did not listen to him. The editor was the one that added the word "Yuon" and added in the bracket, that it was a racist epithet. I apologized to Mr. Meas Sokchea, for my failure to understand the process behind reporting a story.

At Keo,
I understand your frustration and anger behind this issue, however writing a letter with this kind of language and tone only reflects badly upon you. Please in the future, if you want people to take your concerns seriously, you must not show disrespect and sarcasm in your letter. I don't understand why KI media is posting such an angry and thoughtless letter.

Anonymous said...

8:02PM and 11:50PM, it's not about using the word "YOUN" is the perception and the meaning of the word.

According to what you said regarding Meas Sokchea reply to your email. He is afraid to use the word "YOUN". This is why he suggest PPP to used the word "VEITNAM". Therefore he is aware that the word "YOUN" is not proper to use. Do you see what am seeing...? He never said the word "YOUN" is not wrong to used.

12:00 AM,

The more people write about it the merrier; Khmer appears to have been stoic and does not seem to be able to speak up for themselves for so long and that's MAYBE partly why Khmer is in a situation where they are today. Can Khmer afford to hang loose and wait around for somebody like you to speak up for themselves? I think not. Let each and every Khmer in this World of World wide web exercise his/her own freedom of speech and be responsible for him/herself, wrongly or rightly...

You write anonymously - how would one know who you really are? Yes, your point is well taken 12:00 AM, but at the same time, one can ask - have you done something about it whether it be here on KI-Media or anywhere else for that matter???

More after you'll have answered to my question. Thanks.

thank you for educating the phnom penh post staff writers. maybe they are too young or too old to understand this. i hope it is now clear to them to say it correctly. it is everyone's responsibility to help correct and teach or educated the world, etc... thank you again.

Anonymous said...

And why this 12:19 AM person says what he says? Is he Touch Bora or something or is he/she just a pretender???

Anonymous said...

Does that editor go by the name of Michael Hayes? Anyone know?

Anonymous said...

yes, the last time i read, it was mr. hayes. now can mr. hayes come to this blog to get educated about the real meaning of khmer language. i mean, i have nothing against him, just wanted to make sure everyone is educated about cambodia, that's all. thank you.

Anonymous said...

I'll let him eat hays pretty soon!!

Anonymous said...

12:00 AM, I echo your point. To use offensive language to write to editor of a newspaper would reflect on us Khmers that we are uncivilized. We can write angry letters to the newspaper editors but express our anger in a diplomatic way. We don't want foreigners, especially the editor of PPPOst, to think that all Khmers are uncivilized, uneducated and barbarians.

I posted comments at 11:50 pm and 12:00 am, I am responding to your questions regarding what actions I've taken in my own life?
I also wrote an email to the Phnom Penh Post and addressed it to the Editor, Laura S., and Meas Sokchea, regarding my concern about the mischaracterization of the word "Yuon" with my own reasoning, including examples from my own personal life. I was able to bring the issue to the Phnom Penh Post, without the hostility, sarcasm and the use of inappropriate words. My comment posted at 12:00am, was just a request for all of us to speak with thoughtful words and peaceful actions. Most educated people, with etiquette will always think before they speak. It is well known that if you want someone to respect you, you must also show them respect.
Ghandi and aung san suu kyi would not write a letter with the tone or the language that At Keo displayed in his/her letter. I commend At Keo for taking action and for standing up for what he/she believes in. I just ask that we do it properly in a civilized manner!

As a Journalist, you must only use words that are deemed politically incorrect. I am Khmer and I don't feel that the word Yuon is derogatory or racist at all, and I will continue to use it for the rest of my life. However for Meas Sokchea, he is a professional journalist, so he has to stick with what is politically correct, I can understand his take on this issue.

8:05 AM,

Thanks for coming back with a follow-up comment. Bear in mind one thing in this time and age of the World wide web - there is no single sacrosanct way to achieve what one wants to achieve and if you want to be cliche about it - there is more than one way to skin the cat or if you like - different strokes for different folks: what works for you does not necessarily mean that it will work for others...

Wanting to playing a role as an advisor or a coach (which you have alluded yourself to being one when using such words as " angry, thoughtless, why KI-media...etc...etc...) is not as easy as one would have thought especially in your case - you have absolutely no ideas who the other person is...

8:43 AM cont'd

You are representing nobody but yourself.

Obviously At Keo is not Ghandi or Aung San Suu Kyi and maybe the people at the Post deserves to be reminded with, using that kind of language; After all they've trashed Khmer race already vis-a-vis the "YUON", and you know that too, already if I may add...

Finally, words such as "Smart arse, bright arse...." are nothing at all to common, ordinary people in their daily life...Those folks at the Post are just like you and me, maybe worse because perhaps that are pro-YUON...Are you afraid of them???

One last thing - What At Keo wrote is a personal e-mail. Let At Keo be responsible for him/herself personally please?

Anonymous said...

If you think the Phnom Penh Post is going to publish that provocative e-mail, you all are crazy...

Dears

I just wanted to angry, who stop shut me up say the word Youn. @ this time, I must not to buy The Phnom Penh Post news to read anymore.

Thanks all of you say the word Youn!

the bottom line is viet/youn encrouchment or stealing of khmer lands matter to all khmer and cambodia. we the people of cambodia don't care about individual interest or disinterest, but as for khmer people, it matters a lot. so, if you want us to vote for you next time, you better show us you care about protecting and serving cambodia and its people, ok! otherwise, you are not fit for a khmer leader for thinking like that. wake up already!

8:05 AM,

I don't believe what I am seeing in your few comments in this posting and another one. Stuff coming from a mouth that advocates freedom of speech and expression. It is unfathomable. To start with, do these editors deserve an ounce of respect knowing that they intentionally wanted to cause this misleading with may be irrevocable effects with their inept knowledge on the matter and language? No, they are truly irresponsible. There are many ways to approach this, a settle nicety way and a direct head-on way. Sometimes, when you approach these people in a nice and cordial way, they think you are a push-over. They laugh at and trample all over you. The African-Americans did not achieve their freedom and get to where they are today by just only the silent march and sit down led by Dr. King. There were the Malcolm X factor and the rest as well. The combination of the two equations that enabled African-Americans to the level of freedom and prosperity today. Here is another angle for you and I am sure that you have heard of this term, playing a good cop and a bad cop. They are playing tag team on a suspect to get the information that they want. One cop would come in all rough and tough while the other one is all understanding and empathy. Most likely than not that the suspect would break down and give in. So much of a lawyer that you claim yourself to be, 8:05 AM.

Or may be when everyone is so hard on these imbecile editors, you would not get an good press from them in the future thus hinder your abilities to beg for donations from those rich foreigners. It is clear that you are just riding the wave here.
