First published in October 2008. In order to read the patterns of life well, I am reminded again today of St. James' letter to Christians in the 1st century -- "everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry" -- in the brilliant facilitation of Caby Verzosa and Eric Henry at the workshop sponsored by the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank and the Affiliated Network for Social Accountability in the East Asia and Pacific (of which I am an Executive Committee member) here at the ADB headquarters in Manila.
A managing partner of CMPartners LLC, Eric reminded us of our biases and perspectives we bring into any situation by making this indelibly clear in our group's viewing of a video clip and asking us to focus on the number of complete basketball passes the team in white is making as another team in black is weaving among them...we were so attuned to the white team and counting their passes that we missed completely the black gorilla walking across the scene - all 9 seconds of the 29 second film; of the 40 of us in the room, only one person noticed the gorilla !!
The video serves as another wake-up call for us to be cautious of our biases and colored perceptions and to be re-reminded of the need to be open when we encounter any and all situations. We were reminded (or quickly convinced!) how each of us has an "internal voice" which is also actively at work when we encounter another person or group of people. Of course in life, we live within a set of operating assumptions (e.g. that gravity will not fail us). But certain assumptions can blind us, particularly for task-oriented individuals. The whole discussion was framed in the larger context of effective communication and negotiations. When we go into negotiations, it is important to quiet our "internal voice" in order to be able to hear more effectively what the other person is truly saying. (Meditation is one effective way to quiet the internal voice.) Especially, when there exists differences in positions, it is the more critical to check one's own impulses and position by speaking less and listening more. Normally, when there exist differences, we tend to do the opposite - by advocating harder and raising the volume.
All to say, it has been an invaluable workshop with life's lessons for me to be implemented. And through it all, may we be more wise and effective in reading the patterns of life. - thearyseng.com

I recently addressed a conference organized by Youth for Peace in Siem Reap of 300-plus young people. I saw in their eager faces a deep thirst to know and to understand – themselves, their society and the world around them. I have seen a similar hunger and thirst for knowledge and understanding among my relatively young staff at CSD. This thirst is reflected in their daily conversations and by their pursuit of overseas trainings and night/weekend classes.
Wisdom is reading oneself, others and the world with insight and acting with integrity, writes Dr. Mark Strom.
I believe in - and aspire to - this definition of wisdom. I believe that this is what I detected at the conference and within my staff - the pursuit of wisdom. Whereas some young people are satisfied only to be filled with information that can be obtained with a formal education, these young people wanted more. This means to understand and to act on this understanding with integrity. Or if we are to apply Dr. Strom's definition, they wanted to be able to read themselves, others and the complex world around them with insight, and in doing, to act in accordance with their values and principles.
Roadblocks to wisdom
There exist many roadblocks to their pursuit of wisdom in this society. At the conference, as with my staff, I detected a deep frustration on many of their faces, underlying their deep yearning to be able to read the patterns of life to their satisfaction. I believe that this frustration stems from their inability to meet their hunger for knowledge and understanding adequately. It is as if they are living in a shroud of murkiness and entanglement, surrounded by an invisible wall of indirection, confusion, noise and overwhelming information, which remains unframed and unattached to the larger picture of life.
I empathize and sympathize with these young people because I see myself in them. Like them, I grew up with a desperate desire to understand and to make sense of myself, others and the very confusing and complex world around me. I wanted clarity and sense to replace the entanglement of my accumulated experiences of loss, trauma and the drastic, fast-paced changes of an introduction to a new American culture, and the larger globalized world. Almost 38 years later. I am still pursuing wisdom – that is, learning how to read the patterns of life in depth, and in the process, to act in accordance with the dictates of my conscience. I believe it is a pursuit which will follow me until the final hours of this life, with much more clumsiness and inelegance still abounding, I am certain.
Reading the patterns of life
I believe that to be able to read the patterns of life thoroughly and with care, honesty is first and foremost required. There must exist a genuine and deep desire to want to know and to understand. This honesty can only be tested and known by the pursuer of knowledge. False modesty, which exists too abundantly in our culture, must be extinguished. Dishonesty, even if in modesty, must be discarded. I am convinced that the truth will set us free. True honesty further requires the acknowledgement of one's own ignorance as a first step to wisdom; the ancient philosophers understood this well. We in modem times have forgotten this fundamental paradox.
Here in Cambodia, wisdom is automatically and unquestioningly equated with age and experience. I wholeheartedly believe that age allows for experiences which, when honestly and thoughtfully appraised and reflected upon, can truly serve as a beautiful tapestry and resource for the obtainment of wisdom. My grandmother Yi Hao was the embodiment of wisdom arising from age and experience.
On the other hand, because one is old does not mean that one is wise. Wisdom derived from age requires a shrewd and honest reading of life's diverse and challenging experiences, and is realized through further implementing the lessons learned in one's future actions.
The best lessons to learn come from one's own experience, and the more rich, challenging and diverse they are, the more powerful and insightful the lessons gained will be.
A diverse and broad reading of books - philosophy, biography, history, fiction etc. - will also accomplish similar goals, but only if one is reading with an eye and heart attuned to understanding. This is why I mourn the limited materials available and pervasive non-culture of reading that exists here. How are we able to see the patterns of life meaningfully and in depth, the expanding multitude of cultures and centuries of custom, if we are limited to just our own experiences?
Hierarchy of ideas
I beseech the parents, civic leaders, teachers and other policymakers to pay more careful attention to creating an enabling environment for our children to learn - not only through quality formal education but through attention to life's experiences. Policies must be developed under which creativity and imagination are encouraged and fostered, where questioning is welcomed and habitual. I have seen firsthand how the process of critical questioning and the search for truth - the Socratic-Method, most famously used in American law schools - is helpful to move on from opaque muddiness to clarity, from vagueness to precision, in thoughts and ideas. It can be deceiving to think that we are learning, and thus wiser, because of the inundation of information we experience living in this modern hi-tech age.
However, not all ideas are equal; there exists a hierarchy of thoughts and ideas - first principles, whereby other thoughts and ideas are built upon. The process of questioning and creativity/imagination will allow us to penetrate the saturation of cluttered junk into clearer thoughts and thinking.
In another column, I will address the Khmer language issue. I believe the Khmer written language particularly is in disarray, in need of updating and development as it is currently not conducive to clear expression and clear thinking.

Wow, this article is deep for me to comprehend. As you get older, you gain more WISDOM and be able to use your wisdom to guide your life in a positive ways. Good written article, Ms. Seng! Keep up the good work!
Why does she always make references to the bible? Just curious.
yes, it goes to show the importance of getting an education because it makes us a good citizen of the world, really!
religion is a personal preference, respect that preference!
yes, every religion has something to teach or guide, please respect people's religious preference! that is one human rights, believe it or not!
I'm not a religious person. But I always respect those who believe in something! Give them a lot of credits for doing good things. For me personally, GOD is within yourself. If you love yourself, honor yourself, respect yourself and always think of yourself first, then comes other people. The rest is well piece of cake!
Haha...you people need to calm down.
If you are understand most religions, they all have similar teachings. There is no need to always quote from the Bible. Let's see if next time she will quote from the Qur'an. Oh wait, she is white-washed!
also, get to know yourself first, because a lot of time we try to understand other people, and we fail to understand ourself. i guess it brings up the topic of extrovert or introvert personality. maybe they can't help it if they born that way, perhaps! maybe just doing the right thing is the balance of these two personality, i guess! it's more complicated than we think it is, really!
i like to think of it as taboo. it just mean what other believes or not believes is taboo to you because it looks different or weird to you, that's all. doesn't mean they are right or wrong, though, it just their way!
I think theary seng has great concerns for Cambodian/khmer "patterns of live". She always tries to make people understand her writing and her view on the whole khmer society, whether they be friends or strangers, she doesn't judge as you can see throughout her article. This reflects a good sould of a woman her ages. Sometimes I think she cares too much about khmer people!
Theary made Valid points. I too sometimes frustrated the limitation of growth of Khmer younger generations. I see the road blocks of the elites and elders put up. Some how, we have to jump over using/wasting too much of our energy to reach our goals eventhough the goals are mutual goods. One must wonder if all of us know what is good for us. Clearly, all of us agree that current ways of things done in Cambodia are not civilized and not benefit for our future.
it is easy for people to fool on one detail or one side of thing and perceive to see as the only truth but it is not easy to see the whole thing which asked much effort if not much big brain cell. The bad side of such practice is that, if you cure a symptom of a sickness, you masque the real sickness which require much adequate treatment. By that you rather worsen it or even can kill the sicker little by little if not a sudden die. Do what you can do to help while you can bring help but don’t make it the only truth for other and yourself.
NOT ALL RELIGIONS ARE EQUAL!
WHY NOT? Because there is only one God - that is the God of the Bible, the God of Israel. All others are false gods made up by man ideas.
America was founded on the principals of biblical foundation. Because of that truth America became the greatest nation upon the face of this earth.
But this true foundation is being demoralize by those who hates the God of the Christians. Everything about God in the public square is becoming offensive to the God haters--in essence they hate the true wisdom that is from God.
True wisdom comes from the creator God who made made man in his own image. Think about it - he that made man, does he not also teaches man?
Look at Solomon, king of Israel, he was the wisest man ever lived on this earth. God gave him his wisdom that exceeded all the wisest men ever lived. Now, doesn't that give one an incentive to learn from him? He wrote over 3000 proverbs.
ISRAEL-God's chosen people on earth.
History
Because Israel was given to know what is true and not true-they received the greater punishments for their sin against Yah their God.
After the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the year 70 AD the temple in Jerusalem was destroy for a second time as foretold by Jesus before his death and ascension back up to heaven.
Before this time the ten northern tribes of Israel had been carried away by their enemies because of their sins. After the destruction of the second temple, Judah was also carried away by their enemies.
God said that he would scatter them among the nations for two thousand years. And after two thousand years he would regather them back to their own land, Israel.
In 1948, Israel again became a nation in one day as God said it would happen. When they were out from the land-the land became a waste land during those years. When they came back to reclaim the land: God said that they would rebuild, cultivate to make the land very fruitful--and in the land of Israel is just that. Israel is very prosperous compare to their neighbors around them who only wanted to annihilate them.
Not all Israel are regather back to their land as promised by Yah their God. A greater regathering will take place in the near future.
History has it that America and Israel are the two greatest nations on earth due to the fact that we serve the same God. And that America had always sided with Israel and supported her. God had promised that those who bless Israel will be bless and those who curse Israel will be curse.
God, he is the God of all flesh - not just the God of Israel, he chose Israel to be his ambassador to the world.
Hear ye the words of your Creator:
1 Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise?
2 He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?
3 He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?
4 The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.
5 Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law.
The law of God is:
7The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
8The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
9The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
10More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
11Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
12Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.
These passages are from the book Psalms.
Theary Sen is one of a kind. She's an incredible writer.
Well done, Theary. Keep the faith.
The greatest play ever written is the Bible, really.
The world is the stage: Nations and people are the actors. Every thing that are happening around the glob - they are actually acting out their parts as is written in the bible.
There are two directors involve in this play, they are:
1) God - his name is Yaweh, Creator of heaven and earth or the author of life as we know it. He is all pure in wisdom and understanding.
2) Adversary - the devil or Satan.
This figure opposes every thing that are good and upright.
Here is the true wisdom of humanity:
God made man and gave him authority to rule and reign on earth by his divine will, but the Adversary subverted that authority from man and ever since man has been subjected to Satan' political schemes. The god of this world has blinded the eyes of the masses from knowing their true reality of who they could really be Christ Jesus. Satan's plan has always been to lead men into rebellion against their Creator, eventually to everlasting destruction.
Current events are prophetic reality of what the scriptures had predicted long ago. Every day the actors are playing out their parts unknowingly by them. Since God knows the End from the Beginning, he has the ultimate control of every thing happening on stage.
As the play progresses - the world will grow darker and darker, many will die from man made oppression and natural disasters, etc...But the end is not yet. Those who seek will find the answer to the end of this age. Go read the bible and there you will find the wisdom and understanding you need for what is about to befall upon this wicked world. Actually the judgment of God has already started to fall on this world. But the ungodly know not the judgment of God, therefore they will perish in it.
I wonder who her prince charming is, or doesn't she have a prince charming on her mind? :=)
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom."
"By the fear of the LORD do men depart from evil."
The Praise of Wisdom from Proverbs
Proverbs 8
1Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?
2She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.
3She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.
4Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.
5O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.
6Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.
7For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
8All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.
9They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.
10Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
11For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
12I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
13The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
14Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.
15By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.
16By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.
17I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.
18Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.
19My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.
20I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:
21That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.
22The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
23I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
24When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.
25Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
26While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
27When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
28When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
29When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
30Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
31Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
32Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.
33Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.
34Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
35For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.
36But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.
10:39am, you think ki media is some sorts of a gospel? It would be better off for you to preach to those people who attend church on sunday, not here.
Give me a break. Is this some sort of after-school special? What a complete crock of bull. Words are cheap, Seng, especially coming from pretentious pseudointellects. I was expecting to read something amazing and enlightening, but all I got was cliché droning that cost me 3 minutes of my life that I'll never get back. Also, quoting passages from books does not compensate for true wisdom or knowledge. As for those who praise this garbage are a bunch of shallow tools. Stringing-a-bunch-of-words-like-this-does-not-make-one-a-martyr. Word!
11:21am, who do you think you are? you're just a bowl of grass on your head.
another dumb ass trying to make a name for herself by promising to be an advocate for the khmer community. the bitch is going to exploit and destroy instead.

Wow, I'm shocked to read such profanity reaction from anti-Christians.
Please show the rest of us how smart you are by using meaningful vocabulary in your dissagreement.
I'm so glad to read there are other Christians using this blog. When I read such profane comments when Scriptures are quoted, I am reminded that we(Christians) are "casting pearl before swine."
12:30 pm Call me a fool, what a psychopath, mentally ill you are!
Theary Seng is a good writer, but to me, she doesn't fit the personality of girls who "just wanna have fun!" She's somewhere in between the cofee bean personality and the "girls just wanna have fun" group. I don't think she's a workaholic either. What do you people think of her work ethic? :=)
Keep doing what you are doing Theary Seng, someday a prince charming may turn up in your life.
i think theary is a rogue woman, she's the sarah palin of cambodia. god bless her.
Life is what you make of it, be it a simple life or one inheritted with wealth. The question is: would you be content or happy with you life, given the conditions and upbringings you are in?
One may live a life filled with material wealth, educational resources, but without balancing personal or professional lives one would be bombarded by vast amount of stress. this consequently is a sign of burnout.
Sometimes reading too much of philosophical books makes you insane, or worse, causes brain damage.

12:39 stop filling up this screen with what is already done, just learn from the past, for today is more important than yesterday. Keep speaking up in the name of good wisdom and peace because at the end of the day the righteous will live forever and the wicked will be terminated "the righteous is the road to life whereas wickedness is the road to death Proverbs Chp12:7. So, Just be good and good will come to you "if you are sensible; you will control your temper and when someone wrong you, it is a great virtue to ignore it" ibid chp19:11 so, just let the Lord deal with it for you. If the gov't uses and abuses their power, they will not get away from it like "if you oppress poor people; you insult the lord who made them but kindness shown to the poor in enact of worship chp (ibid 14:31). Congratulations Theary, keep going. Khmer Love Khmer
have you ever heard of going-in-a-circle? Or, a catch-22?
doing good things and growing wisdom are not about constant self-reflection and self-adoration...
If Theary Seng were not so narcissistic, pretentious, and didn't ride around in a Land Cruiser like the other khmer thieves then maybe she could get a bit more credibility. Her blatant vanity and self-promotion cloud her honorable mission, have you seen her blog? Way too many glamour shots of herself. She is not too far removed from the people that she fights against.
May the God bless Theary Seng and all her family.
don't hate her because she is beautiful. i like politician women who also dressed up and looked very professional. hey, what you expect, she's also a lawyer! theary, don't let personal criticism effect you. please be yourself and how you were trained. i admire you.
In essence, Theary Seng is a liar and con-artist.
Theary, you are an old goat. You are older than 38 years old. You are 40 something now. You have been trying hard to convince people to believe it. A lie is a lie and it is a reflection of everything else about you.
Just want to share those bloggers with Theary. Here I would like to quote from Dalai Lama,
"Th altruistic attitude is the root of happiness within the human community."
Theary can be anything that she wants to be, but for us to share this blogging - we should have "altruistic attitude" to each others in order to build human community. This altruistic attitude toward Khmer brothers, sisters, community, event as toward the CPP Khmer is no exception. This is the only way to build the root of happiness for our Khmer people and our Khmer nation.
Please build compassion in your heart to Khmer people and our nation.

Indra Devi Darling,
I think Theary Seng has great concerns for khmer people and humanity. I am in agreement with you that us khmer need to overcome our differences and work toward our common unity.
Indra Theary,
Your slogan rings hollow because you don't practice what you preach.
Have you ever taken a moment to examine your own reflection? I bet you never have. You see people who are critical of you as lesser than you. There, that's your fallibility. Many of them are much wiser than you. You are apparently not bright enough to realize that they can see something which you yourself can not see. Try with all your might to wrap your head around still you can not see. The tip of your nose is hopelessly chasing your rear end but it will never catch up. You just keep going in circle like a mad dog and are still blind. Unless you change your attitude. So far people who have been criticizing you are not far from the truth about you.
Stop this ridiculous charade, Theary. It makes you look like a very insecure person and woman for that matter.
From Indra Devi,
To: 5:52AM,
Thanks for agreed with me - building peace is starting within ourselves. In addition, we need to help those people around us a bit happier, our environment that we are in better, have a bit compassion and understanding toward each others.
To 7:35AM.
Either you have an animacity toward her, or you can't think of anybody els that sharing this blog is not Theary. As you know Theary is having only one God - and her god is not Buddha or her understand of Buddhism. Do you think that she would quote Dalai Lama?
If you can't open your heart, please have your mind open.

Nice try Indra Theary by resorting to deny and diversion. But your stinking rear end is still in the open. Yeah yeah your God is MONEY, POWER and GREED. So you said that your God is not Buddha and you don't even follow Buddhism. Yet you quote Dalai Lama. Ah, word game, manipulation. You think nobody can't see through that. You are trying to hide your identity from certain somebody and foreign donor organizations while not risking alienation from your 2 or 3 followers. To them this is sleazy and unethical and never mind the 2 or 3 Khmers, the hell them, right? Also why the hell did you dress all in black (color of morning), act all sorry and devastated, stand in a Buddhist temple and before Buddha statue? It was all for show and you played to the Khmer audience, didn't you? There was and is no truth or sincerity from you whatsoever. Above all it is an ultra low for you to use the Buddhist religion as your tool to cover up your track. You are such a con-artist! A two-face liar! THEARY SENG, the more you are spewing and the sicker you become,
