Vietnamese authority forbids Khmer Krom from listening to Khmer radio or watching Khmer TV

Source: Radio Free Asia

The Vietnamese authority has banned Khmer Krom from listening to Khmer radio or watching Khmer TVs broadcasting from Cambodia, reports Radio Free Asia.

Mr. Thach Setha (pictured), president of Khmer Kampuchea Krom Association in Cambodia, said the Vietnamese authority has issued written bans to all Khmer Krom from listening to Khmer radio or watching Khmer TVs. "Now we have another serious issue in Kampuchea Krom and that is they (Vietnamese authority) ban Khmer Krom from watching TVs and listening to radio broadcasting from Cambodia and if they continue to ignore the ban and continue watching or listening, they will be fined 10 million dongs ($850). And there is another directive from the (Vietnamese) Prime Minister which bans us (Khmer Krom) completely from listening (radio and watching TVs)", he said.

A Khmer Krom from Tay Ninh (Preah Tropeang) province who spoke on condition of anonymity, said currently the Vietnamese authority strictly ban all Khmer Krom from listening to Khmer radio or watching Khmer TVs. He said the bans are strictly enforced by the deployments of secret police during the day and night time to spy on them.

Mr. Thach Setha said the bans by the Vietnamese authoriy come at a time when there are news that 9 Khmer Krom associations in Cambodia had requested for air time from Cambodian National Radio to broadcast about events, history, culture and educational and news related to Khmer Krom and Kampuchea Krom. He said the bans are particularly enforced in all Khmer Buddhist temples in Kampuchea Krom where Vietnamese authority has gone to all temples to forbid Khmer monks from listening to Khmer radio and watching Khmer TVs. "Recently, there are summons (by the Vietnamese authority) issued to Khmer monks and Khmer Krom people who have installed sattelite disc to watch Khmer TVs. They summoned them to tell them not to watch Khmer TVs any more. The Vietnamese authority forced them to sign a letter promising not to listen to Khmer radio and Khmer TVs. They really strictly enforce the bans. These people (Vietnamese authority) really mean business!", he said.

The Vietnamese embassy in Phnom Penh cannot be reached for comments. However, NGOs and cilvil society in Cambodia said the Vietnamese bans are racist and are contrary to the Cambodian authority who allow all Vietnamese immigrants living in Cambodia to listen to Vietnamese radio or watch Vietnamese TVs freely without any restrictions.

According to Mr. Thach Setha, currently, there are approximately 10 million Khmer Krom people living in the former Cambodian territories in southern Vietnam.

If the Khmer Prime Minister, Samdech Hun Sen is a real Khmer leader of Cambodia he should be able to do the same to all Vietnamese living in Cambodia.

There is no reason to grant liberty to these Vietnamese dwelling in Cambodia whose government is a real killer of all Khmers, piece by piece, person by person and group by group.

I still refuse, at the moment, to believe that Samdech would be that stupid to allow this to happen to his fellow Khmers in Kampuchea Krom without a counter attack. Yuon will always be Yuon.

Samdech, pelase show the Yuon that you always care about your own people as the Yuons do theirs. We are the Khmers - we must be strong in unification. May the God bless the Khmer, and may He bless Samdech Hun Sen.

The international media are quick to jump on Cambodians when we do something to Viets, but when Viets did the worst thing to Cambodians they turned a blind eye. Where is the Phnom Penh Post who suppose to work for the interests of Cambodia and Cambodians? What the Viet authority did was not only racist but the worst kind of human rights abuse and ethnic cleansing.

Come on Phnom Penh Post, please help spread this news to the outside world.

I hope the UNPO investigate this issue and make complain to UN as effective they wish.

There are currently 10-12million of Khmer Krom living on their own lands without having their own representatives.

The YUON government has been lying to UN or the World about the exactly number of Khmer population.
They have them listed as 1-2 million.

In reality there are more Khmer Krom then YUON's has put in the UN's list.

To all Khmer Krom and our brother Khmers in Phnom Penh, please wake up and fight the YUON like we have fought them in the past.

Do you all remember about this YUON general that he got an order from his king to take over Khmer.
His name is Troeung Minh Giang!

That time all Khmer has the population about 1million and they managed to rebel and all of them rised up and kicked this guy of the country. I don't know if he killed himself or Khmer killed him.

That battle was started in Phnom Penh. The burrial ground of YUON got defeated was once called "Rondao Kop YUON" or called YUON's burrial ground.

The place is now called "Stoeung Meanchey" Because the name so bad, we changed it to this name Stoeung Meanchey.

Please all rise and rebel and don't let the water rise up to our noses again.

We must unite to fight this Vietnamization!!!!

Wake up the three monkies. If you all still serve your master Viet, one day Cambodia and cambodian, especially your children, faith will be the same as Khmer Kampuchea Krom.

i agree with the above comments. khmer should wake up now. when youn fully control khmer like loas, that will be too late. khmer krom is also an example, they have fought so hard to just demand their right to live as a human being, you can see how the Viet communist do to them. if khmer people continue sleeping, one day will receive the same faith as Khmer Krom.

WAKE UP KHMER!

It is very wrong to limit people to have the freedom of life, like it doesn't matter what people want to do in term of listening to a radio whether it is not khmer or viet, just look at Aust and USA we have the freedom of choice because we treasure knowledge. we believe the more languages or knowledge that people the better. It is not right to use and abuse the power. Just do the right thing for the righteous will live forever and the wicked will be terminated. Life is too short and at the end of the day we belong to the earth and the earth does not belong to us. It would be nice if we can integrate and love one another and if we can follow this, we can all be successful in everything that we do. After all god created this world for all of us to share not to be too greedy. As a matter of fact we need each other to build haven on earth and let us fight against all kinds of evils act. there is only one rule that we need to follow and it is "everyone is equally important" because we all are existed for a reason and that is God's purpose. anyway just follow the Aust, Siga, USA and many other successful multicultural society. Lets face it, Vietnam has a much stronger advantage in terms of intelligence and influence within the geo-political arena when compared to Cambodia. Nations around the world will listen more to Vietnam. It's rather sad but it is the ultimate truth.

It is never as blind as ignorance, says KhOpen. So it is no suprise that H S does nothing to help Khmers and Khmer Khrom who have been terrorized by VN for decades and centuries. And instead He has joined hands with Viets to crack down on most Khmers: both Krom and Kandal. Why? because he has been to an elementary school. KhOpen,

make protest at their embassy and consulates in cambodia, really! cambodia allowed them to open school, celebrate tet, etc... and they must be fair to khmer krom for their freedom and choices as well. otherwise, khmer people should demand khmer gov't to ban all viet/youn in cambodia to open viet/youn language school, living illegally on the waterways, lakes and rivers, etc of cambodia. this is not fair to khmer krom. this is not a matter of politics, it's about khmer krom's freedom and choice of expression, and so forth! viet/youn don't have to be paranoid about khmer krom, ok! keep protesting to their embassy and consulates in cambodia, really!

Anonymous said...

if viet/youn continue to suppress khmer krom freedom, rights, etc., then cambodia and khmer people should demand cambodia to curb viet/youn people who happened to live in cambodia not to learn viet/youn language, not to listen to viet/youn radio, music, etc... this will remind them of rude awaken because they can't treat khmer krom people right. so, why should cambodia and khmer people treat viet/youn people in cambodia any different? the viet/youn gov't need to understand this! if they do something to khmer krom, then cambodia will do the same to viet/youn who are in cambodia as well!

There really should be a moderator to this site. Too much trash language fueled by national feelings with little content for real solution.

Vietnam is a tight fist gov't control country, so to an extend it is understandable why they are doing this. Especially when there are millions of Khmer Krom could rise up and cause havoc. Vietnam is not what you'd call the poster child for human right.

Khmer everywhere, including those living oversea should do his/her part to promote unity among Khmer, preserve Khmer language/culture, and advancement of Khmer people. All oversea Cambodian people must encourage their children to attain college education. Bashing other race bring no respect to ourselves, if anything it lower ourselves.

If we take a hard look at ourselve, in the last century it was fellow Khmers who did the most damage to our own people, not Youn, not Siam. Why when there are news of mistreatment we get bent out of shape when between 75'-79' 1 to 2 million Khmer dieded by Khmer's hand. We have Mr. Pot Pot, the extreme nationalist, to thank for that. Mr. Pol Pot hated Youn on the one hand, and use his other hand to slaughter his own people. If we as a people with good moral compass, work toward strong and disciplined culture, good work ethic we do not need to worry about anyone walking over us, no need to fear anyone.

Compare to China, Japan is a small island country but the Japanese was able to colonize part of China for many years in the last century. It speaks volume of the character of the Japanese people and the value they instill in their children. We Khmer can learn something from that!

You have made some good points about racial tension and civility but very bad comparison.
If you compare us to japan, think again and again. Yes you are right about fellow Khmers who did the most damage to our own people. And who are they? If I name them many would say stop blaming each other! Leadership and governance in Cambodia for the last 100 years have caused severe impact to every individual Khmer with physical and psychological injuries. The system have made us fragmented because of the lack of leadership skill an the culture of impunity. Please refer to our recent history that's the reality. I don't expect us to colonize the neighboring country but just to defense and protect our remaining sovereignty and integrity, can our leaders did that? NO. Until UNTAC came and spent 2 billion dollars?
How can we unite when we are heading to different direction and moral value?
The CPP do not care about Cambodia and its people. Many of us are willing to support them by manipulating the situation for their personal gain and selfishness. National unity can only take place when we have a revolution to eradicate the culture of impunity, corruption and treason, there is no doubt about it.

I don't disagree with what you wrote about the culture of impunity that is taking place in the ruling party. It is disheartening to see in 2009 that Cambodia drop its corruption ranking to #153 in the world, if I remember correctly. The ranking put Cambodia near the bottom as one of the most corrupted gov't in the world. If Cambodia ever hope to rise back to greatness, her people needs nothing short of a moral transformation to start. It needs to become a society whose people respect rules of law, or put a mechanism in place to ensure people in gov't operate within the rule of law or suffer consequences. It is a tall order for the current gov't and for Cambodian as a society.

There is an old proverb that say:
"Righteousness exalt a nation, but lawlessness is a digrace to any people." Lawlessness in governance, lawlessness in society is the real cause of disgrace to Cambodia in recent history, not Youn, not Siam. Stop cursing other race for our own lawlessness.
Let me prove my point. The murder of Cambodians between 75'-79' by that Khmer gov't, how many have been held accountable, brought to justice? How many Khmer people keep up with the tribunal? How many Khmer really care I wondered?

As long as Cambodian people don't get the concept of right and wrong, Cambodians will continue to be a byword, a disgrace in the eye of our neighbors. I feel so ashame when I walk the street of Bangkok and saw many of my fellow Khmer beg on the street. This is disgrace!

Thank you very much for your response and I commend your comment to a very high standard. I wish this is a model standard that we Khmer should adopt when we debate in order to reach any solution or education amongst our compatriots.
Like many others in the world many Khmer people are lost with the concept of right and wrong, especially moral value.
They confuse or abuse the wisdom of righteous and develop the new way of manipulating and covering up the wrong in order to serve their need and greed. This is the foundation to set morale in their society which severely cripple the social justice.
What should we do to alleviate the problem? I invite comments with solution please.
