HA NOI — Viettel Cambodia, a subsidiary of Viet Nam's military-run telecom service provider, now owns 42 per cent of the base transceiver stations (BTS) and 88 per cent the optic-fibre cable in Cambodia.
In terms of subscribers, it now holds the second place just six months after becoming operational.
The telecom provider aims to obtain a turnover of US$250 million this year. It also plans to have 3,000 BTS for 2G services and 1,500 BTS for its 3G network. It is also looking to increase its optic-fibre cable network to between 15,000 and 16,000 kilometres.
Viettel said it was looking to have a 46 per cent share of the fixed-line subscriber market, and 90 per cent of the mobile phone and ADSL markets.
The group is now the leading Vietnamese investor in foreign countries.
This year, it plans to invest in Bangladesh, while expanding its market share in other foreign countries.
The group said its targeted turnover this year was VND75 trillion to VND78 trillion ($4-4.2 billion), an increase of 60 per cent to 70 per cent against last year.
In the domestic market, its BTS and optic-fibre cable infrastructure has increased by 50 per cent. It has 26,000 stations for 2G and 3G services and 90,000 kilometres of cable.
The telecom provider plans to have 7,000 operational BTS for 3G services in Viet Nam.
Viettel deputy general director Nguyen Manh Hung said the group would be responsible for designing its products, while they would be assembled in mainland China or Taiwan.
Hung said his company decided to invest in producing made-in-Viet Nam mobile phone products to meet the demand of Viet Nam's 40 million subscribers. It is anticipated that there will be 50 million subscribers by the end of this year.

i am very worried that the secrets of our country would be easily stolen by Hanoi Telecom company. This is one of most stupid leadership of the present government.

Cambodians should not trust Vietnamese companies, specially in high technology because they are too primitive, too archaic..
This Vietnamese company doesn't become a competitor of Kith Meng company ?

This is because they got help from the yuon government [aka Hun Sen government]. The yuon would not last a year in a free competition.

We are living in a globalized world, with IT revolution. With satellite phone, there is no secret at all for any telephone. The spy satellite will pick up your talks in the sky. This is how the US use spy satellite to fight terrrorism.
Viettel's technology is based on optical fibre, conncting all district capitals of Cambodia. Even a remote district like Preah Vihear or Rattanakiri, there is a optical fibre. Thoses are big investments, but the revenue from them are negligent, as in those provinces there are not many people using telephone. The benefit is that even a farmer or a montagnard can have access to Internet. The problem of some people is that this company is vietnamese. When Intel already in Vietnam, future computers will be refurbished with computer chips from Vietnam. Will you refuse to use computer then?
Cambodia is small with a liberal regime for telecoms. Cambodia was amog only 4 countries which are the first to use 3G technology.
Cambodia also uses advanced technology for Internet telephony.

Why you ask such a question. There is a Cambodian telecom company from the beginning, called Telecom Cambodia. It also has optical fibre.
The value of competition is that it benefits the user. Economic nationalism was for 1960s.
Even now parts of cars and computers produced in the US are produced in China
YOU KNOW WHY THEY ARE DEVELOPED SO FAST IN CAMBODIA?
THEY HAVE ALOT OF MONEY FROM VIETTEL IN VIETNAM IN THE SAME TIME THEY OPERATE AS VERY LOW COST AS COMPARE TO OTHER MOBILE OPERATOR IN CAMOBIDIA INTERM OF UNDER TABLE ISSUE AS WELL AS CORRUPTION, FOLLOWING IS THE MAIN POINTS:
1-WHENEVER THEY WANT TO INTALL THE POLE:TO HANG THE OPITCAL CABLE, TO STALL THE BASE STATION, TO CONNECT TO THE POWER GRID OF EDC,... IN GENERAL WHENER THEY NEED TO INSTALLED ANY THING THEY JUST SHOW YOU THE LETTER OF TIA BANH OR HUN XEN THAN WHATEVER YOUR HOUSE IS, YOU CAN NOT COMPLAINT WITH THEM, THE LOCAL AUTHORITHY CAN NOT ASK THEM THE MONEY AS THEY ALWAYS DID WHEN ANY ONE ASKING FOR HELP...THEIR OPTICAL CABLE COULD RUN THROUGH WHATEVER REGION, PROVICE WITH FREE OF CHARGE AND WHATEVER YOU ARE GOVERNER, MINISTER, ETC..CAN NOT BARGAIN WITH THEM.
SO THAT THEY CAN SAVE ALOT OF MONEY THAT SUPPOSED TO SPEND UNNECESSARY AS THE OTHER COMPANY DID.
2. ALL MOST OF TELECOMMNUNICATION EQUIPMENT INSTALLED IN CAMBODIA ARE IMPORT FROM VIETNAM:THEY ALSO IMPORT FROM OTHER COUNTRY WITHOUT TAX:THEY WILL DECLARE THOSE ARE FOR MINISTRY OF NATIONAL DEFEND. THOSE EQUIPMENT ARE CHEAPER COMPARE TO THOSE ODER FROM OTHER COUNTRY. VIETTEL IN VIETNAM IS BIG THEN THEY CAN BUY THE PRODUCT :HUAWEI, ALCATEL, ERICSSON, NOKIA....WITH ALOT OF PROMOTION AND. THEY JUST NEED TO SPEND LITTLE TRANSPORTATION FEE TO CAMBODIA FROM VIETNAM.
3.THEY DID NOT ONLY IMPORT THE EQUIPMENT FROM VIETNAM BUT ALSO THE VIETNAMESE STAFF, ESPECIALLY THE EXPERT IN SYSTEM, PRODUCT, SALE AND MARKETTING. THEY DO NOT NEED TO HIRE FOREIGNER WHO ALWAYS NEED THE HIGHT PAID. FOR LOCAL STAFF THEY JUST PAY YOU 130USD WITHOUT OVERTIME. THEY ASKING YOU TO DO LIKE COW AND PIG EVEN YOU ARE ENGINEER POSITION BUT THEY WILL ASK YOU TO DO LIKE THE LABOR IF THEY NEED. I CAN SAY THAT NOT LOW THAN 70% OF TOTALL VIETTEM CAMBODIA ARE VIETNAMESE:ORIGNALLY FROM VIETNAM AND CAMBODIA BORNED
4. MILITARY AND POLICE STAFF ARE ENCOURAGE TO USE 097 PREFIX OF VIETTEL:NORMALLY DISTRIBUTED FREE AND PERHAP 70% OF VIETNAMESE IN CAMBODIA ARE USING VIETTEL.
YOU CAN IMAGINE WHATT IS THE NATIONAL CONFIDENTIAL SUPPOSED TO BE IF MILITARY AND POLICE ARE USING VIETNAMESE TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEM?
