MYAKKA — A 7-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother witnessed their father being shot to death by their grandfather, and after the shooting the girl handled 911 calls with responding deputies, according to Manatee County Sheriff’s Office reports released Wednesday.

Sheriff’s reports also detailed an ongoing argument between 77-year-old Lim Chhea and his son-in-law Wilson Ngov, 43, that ended with Chhea shooting his son-in-law in the family’s kitchen.

The men lived with their wives and Ngov’s two children in the Myakka home where the shooting took place, in the 44000 block of State Road 70 East.

The dispute between the family members, who are of Cambodian descent, sparked over the handling of the family dogs, sheriff’s reports state. Chhea believed one of the dogs may have killed a goat in the area, and wanted them tied up.

Sheriff’s reports released Wednesday said Ngov disagreed and he argued with his father-in-law over tying up the dogs. On Tuesday, when Ngov left the home, Chhea told Ngov’s wife he “wanted to shoot” his son-in-law, she later told detectives. When Ngov came back home that afternoon, the warning turned into reality.

Ngov heard his father-in-law arguing with his wife and became angry, leading Chhea to get a handgun and shoot his son-in-law in the back in front of his wife and two kids, according to sheriff’s reports. Ngov’s wife wrestled the gun from Chhea, but he also grabbed a knife and tried to cut Ngov’s throat. She also wrestled the knife from him, according to reports.

At 4 p.m., sheriff’s dispatch received a 911 call from Ngov’s 7-year-old daughter and deputies responded to the home, where the first deputy to arrive told the girl over the phone to “get as many people out of the house as she could,” the deputy’s report stated.

The deputy then got on a loud speaker and directed the children out of the house and to the patrol car. Both children made it to the car and ducked behind the vehicle. Inside, deputies found Ngov shot to death, Chhea and both men’s wives.

Ngov’s children later told detectives that they saw their grandfather shoot their father “in the tummy,” according to sheriff’s reports.

Bristow confirmed Ngov was shot twice, but declined to go into detail about where on his body. He also declined to discuss the dispute over the animals, saying the case is still under investigation.

On Wednesday, Chhea appeared before a judge for a first appearance on a murder charge, but the elderly man could not hear a Cambodian translator that called in by telephone to conduct a translation of the proceedings.

County Judge Douglas Henderson postponed the hearing 24 hours in order for a Cambodian translator to be found who can conduct the proceeding in person. Chhea will be held in the Manatee County jail without bond until that hearing.

Just look at this old man face. He is a criminal already and he shows no mercy to kill his son-in-law. Don't tell me he is insane during Khmer Rouge. He deserves to get capital punishment. Why does this stupid old man shoot people just a sake of dogs? He should shoot the dogs instead of his son-in-law. The victim's wife should call the police when she knows her father tries to commit a crime. How come does this stupid Cambodian family have a gun at home? Most of Asian people don't have a gun; only those who are not secure themselves have a gun.

Hang him and don't let him go free.

Take people's life is the worse thing people do.

This is not the only example. Cambodians in America are forced by economic situations to dwell under the same roof with other families. I mean it started out with people living with their immediate brothers and sisters. Then their own brothers and sisters brought in their own families and to share the same dwelling. Lots of major issues arise because people have different habits. Arguements are constant. Repeated arguements and pent-up anger can errupt withour warning. For example, a female member told this male member to take care of his boisterous children. Then the male member said that it was non of her business and that his children were fine the way they were. Then the other member threaten to call the Children's Services because the male member was actually a negligent parant as he was always away and an addicted gambler. His children were actually taken care of by other members of the extended families instead. One thing led to another that male member threatened to kill anyone and burn the whole house down if anyone leaked the story to the Children's Social Serives. It was a mess...

2:58AM,
You are one ingorant fool. "Why do Cambodian family have gun in their home?" The same fucking reason you lock the door to your house.
In America, it's called the right to bear arms. This is the 2 amendment......dumb ass. Any Cambodian family who reside in.....especially Florida, should have a gun.
If you don't think that most Asians don't own a gun, try come to my house uninvited.

Dear all,
I know Lim Chhea and his family. He used to be a very good man, good family person. He had spent most of his time in the Buddhist temple. He is a very respected person in the community. His wife and children are well discipline, beautiful children, and he did not look as bad as in the picture before moving to Florida. He loves Cambodia and Democracy. He supported some political parties to fight against the communist all his life. However, I have heard a few years ago that he did not like that son-in-law. We all don't know what is going on behind the wall. There must be something very bad that made him angry. I could not believe what I have heard.

That is his biggest bad decision.
Because of him,
his daugther lost a husband,
his daugther lost a father,
his grand-children lost their father,
his grand-children lost their grand-father,
and him, he win a life prison or may be a electric chair.
Poor idiot. In your age.

3:07 PM,

I feel your empathy toward Mr. Lim Chea, but whatever happended behind closed door; it still does NOT derive him to kill his son-in-law. Sometime, when it is too much interferences in his family. It can lead to ugly argument between in laws....something like has always happended in Cambodian Community. There are choices in life particularly in America....he feels free to move out of the house, and move on. Now that he chose to kill his son in law therefore, he must bare the consequence. Do they have capital punishment in Florida? If they don't. Florida should adopt one. He won't survive long in jail.

4:32AM,
Yes, Capital Punishment is legal in the state of Florida.
Having said that, let's not jump into a rational conclusion about this case just yet. Let's wait and see what the prosecutor want to charge him with. From what I gathered, look like it leans toward Second Degree Murder. It doesn't look like it's premeditated.
Sounded like an ongoing dispute that finally end in a tragic lost of life.
The problem with us Khmer is, we are too tolerable to ignored the problem and never seek outside help, until it's too late. So said! My condolences to the family.

This is my grandfather. Please be respectful to my family and leave negative comments behind. We are working forward to forget this tragic day and please don't judge him by the picture depicted. He was a very religious and wise man that loved his country. If you spent a minute with him you will not see a person holding a gun, but a man that held his family together when were running away from gunfire into the boarder of Thailand. He raised me to be the man I am now and in return I'm serving in the United States Navy. I view that day as blank period of my life and wish to look to the future. Please pay respects to our lost and live on with your lives.

For those who thinks negative of him and posted comments that belittled him. I want you to ask yourself this question. Who are you to judge him when you don't know the truth behind it? In the Bible, he who without sin shall cast the first stone. In the Buddhist script it talks about karma and how it is a cycle. Maybe he was killed by his son-in-law in their previous life and it was his turn in this lifetime or not. Again, who are we to judge him and say he should be hanged or put in the electric chair? He was 77 years old when he committed the crime and it's sad but no one can know for sure what really happened. I, being an Asian man, knows that I was taught by my parents to give respect to elderly people, so I have nothing negative to say to him except that may God helps his family go through this. I guess the moral of this story is don't judge a book by it's cover unless you read the book. I truly believed that this incident is a tragedy. If people in this world can learn to forgive then this world will be a happier place. If you believe in God then you believe that everything is in God's will. So why are we here being judgmental of him or anybody else. That's why there is the legal system and when he dies it will be in God's judgement.
