A senior Thai Asean official has expressed regret for commenting on a rocket-launch exercise undertaken by Cambodia last week, following a sharp rebuke from Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Asean Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan issued a statement late Tuesday expressing “deep regret that the issue has caused much misunderstanding and discomfort” and had “a very unfortunate and unwarranted effect.”
Surin was criticized for reports claiming he had said the test-launch of some 200 rockets from Cambodian trucks last week could give an impression of regional instability. Surin said Tuesday he had been misquoted.
Cambodia and Thailand are locked in a military standoff at the border near Preah Vihear temple and in a diplomatic row over the appointment of ousted Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra as an economic adviser to Hun Sen.
Hun Sen said in a public speech Tuesday the exercise was no business of Asean, and Cambodia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry issued a sharp rebuke of the remarks, reported by the Bernama news agency.
Officials from the Foreign Affairs Ministry declined to comment Tuesday, saying they had not yet seen Surin’s statement.

Of course, Thais never admited their wrong doing, Thais had abused, shot and burned an unarmed people alive, and they still deny deny...
Mr Pitsuwan must resign and be replaced. We understood your diplomacy, but must not put the blame on the reports by saying misquotation, misinterptretation and misunderstanding..! He is so biased and not neutral.. His regrets is not enough..! He must resign..!
Rockets exercise with FEUD!
FEUD n. = bad blood, vendetta, dispute, quarrel, strife; conflict, altercation, disagreement, bickering, falling out, argument.
Rockets exercise with no FUSE!
FUSE n. detonator, igniting tube, ignition, firing material, wick, torch.
Nobody care even ASEAN member about Cambodian Ancient temple that Thai invaded last year. When Cambodia tested small amount of missile, Surin seemed to care. It suck!!
Should of use those missiles to level Phreah Veheah and see if the Thai still dispute that tract of land.
In the name of Thai trouble maker. It is so unfortunate that he got the gut to say such a thing when Cambodia is not position to hurt anyone; however, his country is acting up and encroachong for Cambodia's soil around Preah Vihear and a long the border.
What about Thais black soldier kept abused those people, shot and burned people alive? why didn't the guy say or done anything about that..? He's a Chairman of Asean Nations..right? alot of Khmers people shackle together and still sitting Thais-jails right now...Can he help solve that problems instead..? I think Cambodia has Right to exercise her military, for defending her country...
The guy must step down from the Chairman's seat, otherwise, Khmer/Thai will never solve their problems, because this guy kept interfered and help his own country..only?
