A MOTHER who defrauded her friends by spruiking fake Gold Coast property investment schemes to fund her gambling addiction was yesterday jailed for five years.
Angela Bamford, 41, appeared in the Brisbane District Court and pleaded guilty to six counts of fraud.
The court was told between 2005 and 2007 Bamford took advantage of friendships she had forged to get six victims and their families to give her about $340,000 on the promise of high returns in a variety of schemes.
Prosecutor Dennis Kinsella said most of the payments were followed by trips to the casinos where Bamford gambled away most of the money.
Mr Kinsella said Bamford, of Brisbane, offered her victims investments in building projects in Canada and New Zealand and property on the Gold Coast.
He said Bamford appeared to live an 'extremely comfortable' lifestyle and exaggerated her financial status to her victims, using some of the money to buy a luxury car worth $80,000.
When some of her victims went to report the matter to police Bamford threatened them and their families, the court was told.
"This included death threats ... one suggestion was a complainant's child would end up in hospital," said Mr Kinsella.
Defence barrister Leon Ackermann told the court Bamford had witnessed atrocities and been abused in Cambodia, including being forced into child labour by the Khmer Rouge.
He said as an adult her marriage was marred by more violence and 'domestic slavery' that led to pathological gambling.
Judge Kerry O'Brien said Bamford was 'plainly a deceitful person'.
Bamford will be eligible for parole in November 2011.

Oh come on! Blaming on the past in KR regime, now this stupid Cambodian woman enjoys gambling while she has a good life at oversea?
How come million Cambodian people who escaped and now live all over the world don't become addict in gambling like her. She needs to be locked up for 25 years minimum.
12:22 PM,
I am in total agreement with you.
ME TOO! Most asian women do that.
Her character is best suitable to be second Hun Sen's wife
what addiction of all kind can do to people! she also need counseling for her gambling addiction!
Some Cambodian people tend to use "The Pol Pot time" as an excuse for everything even though it was happened over 30 years ago. Some people, who are the survivors of Pol Pot, depressed to the point that they cannot work and have to depend on welfare benefits for over 30 years. Some criminals used Pol Pot name to get leniency from the judge just like in this case. Shame, shame, shame on those people.
DAMNNNNN ILL SMASH HER HARDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
I bet this woman even con'ed a dude with a last name of Bamford too. She looks like one of those fast lane women. She uses her charms and street smart personality to part people of their money and properties. She even tried to con. the court with her Pol Pot story. One pathetic character. Sure don't miss her while she in jail except that thing.... What a waste!
7;25am.
She married to Bamford. I bet her husband dumped her already but she still carries his last name.
She has changed her name to Angela Rebecca Kennedy and she will lie and cheat anyone to save her self. Anyone that approaches this women be very careful.
She turned up in new zealand conned 1.1 million from a nail salon owner which was used to buy a house. has court order ro repay all.
Auckland 2014 she probably married Bamford to conceal her identity from con victims that year. She probably wasnt alone.

She is so calculating, dont buy the loose money at casino story, anyone can cash chips out of a VIP room
She lives in Blenheim NZ.
I know exactly
Angela Bamford aka Rebecca Kennedy (Ange) aka Serena Walker (her latest name) has pleaded guilty to fraud in Wellington and is up for sentencing on the 23 June 2023. There are many people who have been touched by her, she chooses her victims carefully, mostly people who are too scared to complain or too embarrassed. Hopefully, she gets a penalty involving time in jail and hopefully other people will come forward, so she has new charges to answer.
She has also been charged with drug charges (yet to be dealt with) and breaking laws of bankruptcy - changing her name without permission, new passport and trying to leave the country.
Any time in jail will not be long enough.
She was sentenced to six and a half years in prison and ordered to serve a minimum non-parole period of half.
A psychiatric report found there was no evidence she accepted responsibility or showed remorse, the judge said.
He was not the only judge to have concerns.
Associate Judge Kenneth Johnston at the High Court in Wellington had imposed special conditions on Kennedy in discharging her bankruptcy last year, saying she seemed to have “learnt nothing”.
The Official Assignee, who administers bankruptcies with the aim of repaying creditors, had not wanted her discharged unconditionally.
Reviewing her evidence at an earlier hearing, the judge said she had continued to “dissemble” when she thought it was in her interest to do so.
