Khiem congratulates media for crucial role

Da Nang — The domestic media had played a crucial role in exposing the false allegations made by hostile forces against Viet Nam, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem said yesterday.

"This was particularly true of such subjects as democracy, human rights, religion, press freedom and Viet Nam's relations with other countries," he told a yearly two-day meeting of the executives responsible for the country's international news services and Government officials to review the media industry in central Da Nang City.

"You've made much progress in writing stories about planting border marker-posts and defending our homeland's territorial integrity," the deputy prime minister said.

"These stories have dispelled worries and anxieties among a certain people."

The deputy prime minister said the media's role in executing the instructions of the Communist Party of Viet Nam's Secretariat to continue to renew, expand and improve the quality of the foreign news service was greatly appreciated.

He asked the executives to ensure their agencies made the best use of their available communication tools to ensure rapid and accurate dissemination of the news.

It also needed to be flexible and suit the interests of different audiences.

A report delivered at the meeting identified the important contribution the country's international media had made last year to help overseas Vietnamese and foreigners further understand what was really happening in the country and win their support.

The Deputy Prime Minister pledged full support for the media from the centre to the grassroots to help it fulfil its assignments.

He asked that reporters continue to write stories about the significance of the completion of the installation of marker posts along the Viet Nam – China border; the borders with Laos and Cambodia and the delineation of territorial waters.

"The stories should highlight our nation's wish to build borders of peace, friendship, co-operation and development with our neighbours," he said.
