Health officials backed up by paramilitary troops are searching people entering Thailand from Cambodia for a Vietnamese-made skin whitening cream believed to contain dangerous chemicals.

A Cambodian bride-to-be died on Sunday in Sa Kaeo Crown Prince Hospital two days after being transferred unconscious and in a critical condition from a Poipet hospital.

Sovann Chuan, 23, the daughter of a senior police officer in Poipet in Cambodia's Banteay Meanchey province, had used Bao Dam brand skin whitening cream and developed blood infections.

Bao Dam products have previously been banned from Thailand for reputedly containing high levels of hazardous mercury. Food and Drug Administration officials are testing the woman's blood and the cream for traces of mercury.

Everyone entering Thailand from Cambodia through the Ban Khlong Luek border checkpoint in Sa Kaeo's Aranyaprathet district is being thoroughly checked for Bao Dam products.

The Aranyaprathet Immigration office has been alerted to the problem and was cooperating in the screening for fear the cream could be smuggled in to sell at shops in Rong Kluea market.

Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanavisit said doctors advised Ms Chuan had died of a blood infection.

Ms Chuan bought the Bao Dam cream in a Poipet market and had rubbed it all over her body to whiten her skin in preparation for her wedding, her father Pol Capt Samuan Chuan said.

She developed severe allergic symptoms including peeling skin and chest discomfort and finally lost consciousness.

Pol Capt Chuan said he believed the cream caused his daughter's death as it contained mercury.

The FDA said tests were still being carried out as to the exact cause of Ms Chuan's death and it had yet to be proven the Bao Dam cream was the cause until the results of an autopsy are finalised.

Several other factors could have been involved, it said.

The provincial health office yesterday searched 42 cosmetics shops at Rong Kluea market for the Bao Dam cream.

Deputy health chief Yutthaphong Srimongkhon said vendors had taken the skin product off their shelves after learning from media reports about the death of the Cambodian woman. They had also removed other cosmetic products from Vietnam, Dr Yutthaphong said.

Bao Dam products had previously been tested and found to contain mercury and banned from sale in Thailand, the FDA said.

It is painful to be stupid! Too poor and too uneducated and the lack of information regarding what the product contain and any negative reaction and these dirt poor Cambodian people are unknowingly being used as a guinea pig!

Just sue the company that make the
Bao Dam product. It is true that some companies out there do make products to kill people!

So regretful. Yes, the price of being too naive is sometimes quite high. Like this girl died because of her and her parents' naivete. Khmers learn things the hard way.

YUON TRICKED...

Just disbelief Yuon products! I don't even believed Siem bought Yuon products. Although Siem banned Yuon products throughout Thailand and don't even notify us about it. It probably seem the first case we had from Bao Dam cream. Those officials trust Yuon too much and see what happened now. They will get rid of us one day at a time.

All Khmers,

A friend of mine just came back from visiting Cambodia.

What he had found out tha Hanoi was, is planning to POISON and kill Khmers in every minutes through Fruits, vegetables, and all kind of foods.

He found out that Hanoi forbid the workers who worked in the fields of fruits and vegetable not to EAT their products. It is only for SALE to Cambodian across the borders.

This a Crime committed by Hanoi against Cambodians to take over our country for their Viet citizens.

9:12 AM,
Are you Chinese, Khmer Rouge, or Communist symphatizer? The article is not associated with America but somehow you always drag America to your play game to discredit America. Don't you feel guilty at all for making up story?

A proud Khmer American

9:12AM,

You're a dummy person. The Bangkok post is wrong in term of the word "FDA". Of course FDA is in America called Food & Drug Administration. FDA in America is not the same way you think. If FDA in America approves illegal drug or poisoning drug, they will be in trouble. America is not like Cambodia or Vietnam. America has a strong democracy in the world. May be the post referred to Siem FDA.

Who doesn't want to buy American made product? A lot of people around the world come to America and want to buy American made like shoe or cloth.

If you think America is killing people and you happen to live in America, you should go back where you belong. It is more safer than America.

Khmer in USA.

Poor Khmer,

Why do you want your skin whiter than yourself? Don't do a stupid thing as Michael Jackson did. Jackson deserves to die because he is so dummy like 9:12AM. He has a lot of money but he hired the stupid doctor whose license was revoked. Why he hired that doctor? Because good doctor won't risk their license to prescribe illegal drug as this desperate doctor did.

So don't act stupid to bleach your skin. You ask for trouble.

Don't trust Vietnam's product. Their product has no quality and do not meet international standard.

I won't buy Youn's product and we all should boycott it.

If you're stupid enough to use Youn's cellular phone company, then do it. Youn army now has their cellular phone in Cambodia market. That way Youn can eavedrop your conversation. If you're dummy enough, go and buy Youn cellular phone.

This is 9:12 AM responding

I live in America and I'm smarter than you think I'm not. You all must be blinded to the facts of what I stated. Haven't you seen drug adds that follow by warnings with side effects that particular drug could cause? And they all in fine prints too. It doesn't matter what country you live, what I've written apply to all who is smart enough to listen.

FDA are criminals. They are legal death squads. You only hear stories from their side but never from the other side. Use both ears.

Mercury will not only kill alive people but can also contaminate blood and gene of these people which will seriously affect their health and reproduction system. It means even people wont die of it immediately their gene and blood contaminated will affect kids (nervous system) that will be born,

That’s the price living under yuon control and leadership. These yuon cronies kill and destroy Khmer for yuons but Khmer will not the only to suffer of yuon policy in Cambodia but these cronies and their offspring as well,

Die to all yuon slave race mentality

I don't care what brand name or what country the product came from, these skin whitening products are still harmful with mercury or no mercury. There's alot of other harmful chemicals in those skin whitening products.

All I can say is that, there's a problem that most the important thing that some societies lack of is learning to love yourself

Truth is there are BEAUTIFUL People regardless of what's on the surface especially skin tone. The media and society tries to tell you what's supposedly "Pretty" or what's supposedly "Ugly" with what you're born with.

Not to long ago Aishwarya Rai rejected a L'oreal Fairness Cream and she said "It's not fair, I'm not going to promote a product that encourages racism, discrimination and self hatred. The only true Beauty is being WHO you are."
