Cambodia threatens to cancel Chevron's oil exploration

April 13, 2010
ABC Radio Australia

Civil society groups in Cambodia have voiced their concern over a recent threat by Prime Minister Hun Sen to cancel an oil exploration license with Chevron. The Cambodian leader has warned he'll terminate Chevron's offshore drilling rights if the company doesn't start producing oil by the end of 2012. It's prompted fears Cambodia could lose a committed and valuable investment partner.

Presenter: Stephanie March
Speakers: Mam Sambath, chairman of Cambodians for Resource Revenue Transparency; Brian Lund, East Asia director for Oxfam America based in Phnom Penh

I just wish that Mr. Samath will improve his speaking ability of the English language. His pronunciation of the English words is simply a huge problem. I have a hard time following his meaning from his composition of the words. I would recommend him taking accent reduction class, if there is one available in Cambodia.

The question to ABC is what they mean about "civil society group". To my knowledge, they are just a NGO people, not fully representing civil groups, according the definition of civil society.

Nothing is perfect, nothing is always right, and not always wrong either!

We are a nation, even though our independence and sovereignty remain in question, should be entitled to deal with something and someone for the sake of the nation.

Sometime, we have to leave HIM to do jobs, while you are cool in the air-con room, sitting in front of PC and/or laptop typing for the critique.

The delayed due to Cambodia govt corruption, plus Mr Hun Sen wants Viet Nam Oil company to take over.
That's all Hun Sen and his govt are trying to do, but by force.

2:28PM you are corrected the Vietnamese wanted that oil fields for free and force CHEVRON to quit. HUN SEN did everything to fulfill the Vietnamese interests or he will be kill by the Vietnamese. He never care and never will about the Khmer people suffering, struggling to survive, hardship, loss of land and homelessness by forced evictions, and etc.

China is coming!
USA has two choices, burn Cambodia again or build bridges, roads.. for Cambodians.
The second one is less expensive..

He is being pushed by China and other asian countries and offered large amount of under the table money to make this type of statement. He needs to shut his lips and start working for the people NOT pushing the country backward. Who do you trust, Chevron 2nd largest US oil company or a Chinese owned oil company. Chevron has been there and done that and they have awesome technology that can well be utilized by Cambodia in the future...
