Groups Want Prosecutions in Timber Crackdown

I urge the Cambodian government to crack down on illegal logging at its roots.
Rights groups on Friday praised the government for a recent crackdown on illegal logging but said they want those arrested in the ongoing operation to be prosecuted without political bias.

Arrests are continuing in a sweep of border provinces where illegal logging still takes place, and Prime Minister Hun Sen sacked the head of the government’s forestry administration earlier this week.

But members of the Cambodian Human Rights Action Committee told reporters Friday Cambodia still lacks the proper law enforcement and management to conserve what is left of the country’s forests.

In Nam, a representative for a forest community in Kampong Thom province, told reporters Friday he had watched the environment around him deteriorate. When he was a boy, the forest had elephants and tigers, he said. “Now all are lost.”

“I urge the Cambodian government to crack down on illegal logging at its roots,” he said.

RISE UP OR STAND UP FOR YOUR SELF CAMBODIAN. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET OUT FROM YOUR DICTATORSHIP LIKE HUN SEN. WHY DON'T YOU USE YOUR PEOPLE POWER TO REMOVE THE HUN SEN REGIME OUT OF POWER. TRY TO GET A FEW MILLIONS KHMER TO RISE UP AND GO TO HIS HOUSE DEMANDING HIM TO STEP DOWN. DON'T YOU SEE WHAT THE PEOPLE OF THAILAND DID RIGHT NOW. OPEN YOUR EYES. IF YOU WANT A GOOD FUTURE AND A GOOD LEADERSHIP IN CAMBODIA YOU MUST CALL MILLIONS OF CAMBODIAN TO STAND UP RIGHT NOW. WAKE UP KHMERS INSIDE.

i totally agree that gov't should crack down on illegal logging once and for all. make it a crime by law, and punish those found involved either directly or indirectly. i mean, gov't must discourage this illegal activity by all mean. also, encourage people to plant more and more trees in cambodia. trees and other plants makes our country look so beautiful and green. we all can help with this. god bless cambodia.

Hun Sen should jail Ty Sokun for destroying Cambodian's forest.

If Hun Sen doesn't give a consequences to this guy the next guy will be the same.

He must be jailed.
He is a national traitor.

And other the hand, Sam Rainsy was charged with betrayal. This is stupid decision. Sam Rainsy should be given medal of honor for being so brave to uprooted the fake border marks between YUON/Khmer.

the thing with sam rainsy is probably he lost a lot of credit for his political involvement in other things or matters in cambodia. i mean, the border issue he helped was fine and admired, but there are other issue that he involved that is less honored for him to do so, i think. maybe he should concentrate his hobby more on protecting borders than getting involved with all issues thinking he the hero for khmer people or something! not right, you know. everybody knows something, not everything, ok! sam rainsy needs to reevaluate his skills and put them into use where they are most useful, really! that's the difference!

i think when the prime minister start talking and taking action on different issues important to the nation, people will look at him differently now that cambodia is changing a lot in many fields. good to see real reforms this way and more. god bless cambodia.
