Nearly 50 Monks Ill in Mass Food Poisoning

Forty-eight monks fell ill with food poisoning Sunday and were recovering in two separate hospitals Wednesday, possibly after ingesting insecticide, hospital officials said.

The monks, from the Wat Koh Krabay pagoda in Kandal province, suffered upset stomachs and diarrhea following a ceremony hosted by Cambodian-Americans on a visit, Teng Soeurn, head of Preah Kosamak hospital in Phnom Penh, told VOA Khmer.

Twenty-three monks were treated at Preah Kosamak, and another 25 were treated at the Cambodia-Soviet Friendship Hospital, also in Phnom Penh. All 48 were recovering, the doctors said.

The mass poisoning came amid worries of continued outbreaks of cholera. At least six villagers died and 53 were hospitalized in a cholera outbreak in Kratie province last week.

Clinical examinations of the monks’ stool discounted that disease, Teng Soeurn said, adding that the monks could have died without treatment.

“It is a different condition from cholera, which is contagious from one [person] to another,” he said. “Food poisoning is not contagious one to another.”

Food poisoning can occur in unhygienic conditions, but the monks may also have eaten toxic vegetables in their meal.

“All the monks ate Vietnamese noodles with salad and insecticide, and then all the monks got stomach aches and severe diarrhea, but it is not cholera,” said Say Sengly, head of the Cambodia-Soviet hospital.

At least some of the monks had gone home, he said.

Monks are the watchmen for Dharma and Buddha teaching for the khmer society and people. They utterly fail the role and duty entrusted to them by Buddha. Karma law: They reap the consequences, together with all lay bouddhistes whoo feed them.
Leadership in revival the Ethics by Buddha Dharma should be urgently undertaken. If not the table will again turn on the head of the monks and by ricochet all the so call buddhist who is actually not one, or worse a plain devil.

Khmer gov't needs to learn from this incident and try to prevent thing like this from ever happen again, by creating a law like having a food control unit like who has the licence can prepare the foods for the group. This incident is an example of a "mass murder" and we can not accuse anyone because too many people involved in foods handling!. So, in the future monks should not go around ask for foods or let others bringing them foods, it is for security reasons. All monks should go out and ask people to donate monies instead, then past these monies to the chiefs, by then they know how to prepare foods for monks and at the same time they are the one who have the license to do so. Again, there will always be enemies living among us in every nation. Even Jesus has one too. so, we have to be careful all the times. In Aust, we have what we called a "contract" which is based on the ethical code and the code of conduct as well as by following the organisational structures, e.g. who is the boss, manager, committees and daily programs like, who is to handle what?, e.g. from 7am to 7.30am breakfast, 7:30am-8am praying time, and then attending class after that etc. Aust
