Thailand: The king and the absolute monarchy

Op-Ed by Khmerization
18th April 2010

“King Bhimbol’s brother, King Anand, was found shot in the head in his bedroom 64 years ago and there was a widespread suspicion that Bhumibol had something to do with his death because he was the only one in the bedroom with King Anand at the time of his death.”

I know I have put myself in political hot waters or even in trouble with Thailand’s draconian lese majeste law for writing this opinion piece critical of the Thai royal family. I might even be subjected to a Thai lese majeste law. However, in this modern age and living in a free country that cherishes free speech, I believe that all individuals, regardless of their status, political belief or creed, should be permitted to exercise their full constitutional rights in expressing one’s own free opinions without any fears of being persecuted for expressing those very opinions.

With this in mind, I am mindful that even an Australian ABC TV, which had just screened an excellent documentary critical of the Thai royal family titled “Thailand - Long Live the King”, is faced with prosecution by this draconian Thai lese majeste law. I am now taking the risk for writing this critical article about the Thai royal family. I hope I am not a big enough fish whom the Thai government or the Thai king should argue with.

Thai lese majeste law is very draconian by any standard. It imposes severe and long term prison sentence for any people who defy the law. Anyone, Thais or foreigners, making the slightest remarks or innuendo critical of the Thai royal family risked being jailed between 3-18 years. On the political arena, the Thai subsequent governments have consistently and effectively used lese majeste law against their opponents, in the political or academic circles. Many opponents of the Thai subsequent governments and anti-royalists, such as Thaksin Shinawatra and Giles Ungaporn and others, had been jailed or been forced to live in exile with drummed up and false charges against them.

Many people have been persecuted and incarcerated needlessly for supposedly insulting the king. There are abundant examples of the ridiculousness of the applications of the Thai lese majeste law. A foreigner was once jailed for defacing the Thai currency that bears the picture of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. An Australian novelist, Harry Nicolaides, who satirised an unnamed prince in a short passage in his novel that sold only 7 copies, was in 2009 sentenced to three years in jail under the law over a self-published novel. The female red shirt protesters known as The Torpedo, who said the monarch had damaged democracy by supporting the coup, was jailed for 18 years late last year. Paul Handley, who wrote the only critical book of the Thai monarchy, titled “The king Never Smiles”, said he would have been jailed if he is to step foot on Thai soil.

The Thai monarchy is said to be a pivotal point in Thai politics which is central in keeping Thailand united, until now. However, King Bhumibol appears not to be a pivotal point anymore, but now takes side with Abhisit Vejjajiva in the current political crisis. He supports Abhisit against Thaksin because he is fearful of Thaksin’s overwhelming popularity, which surpasses his own popularity, with the majority of the Thai people. This theory has been proven correct because Abhisit has been hiding in the 11th Infantry Military Barracks, the King’s Royal Guards, since the heights of the red shirts’ protests in January. On 10th April, the troops that were used to disperse the red shirt protesters, an action that caused the deaths of 23 people, were mostly members of the Royal Guards as evident by the fact that most of the wounded soldiers were members of the Royal Guards and a colonel, Col. Romklao who was amongst the 4 soldiers killed, was the commander of the Royal Guards from the 11th Infantry.

Thailand had abolished absolute monarchy in a military coup in 1932. However, with the strict applications of the lese majeste law, there are some elements of absolutism in the present Thai monarchy.

The bad and negative side of the Thai royal family had been hidden from the Thai public for more than 64 years, often with self-censorship, but particularly due to the lese majeste law that prevent them from being exposed publicly. King Bhimbol’s brother, King Anand, was found shot in the head in his bedroom 64 years ago and there was a widespread suspicion that Bhumibol had something to do with his death because he was the only one in the bedroom with King Anand at the time of his death. However, due to the severity of the lese-majeste law, the matter of King Anand’s murder had been hidden from the Thai public for 64 years and had never been discussed publicly by any Thais. The murder of King Anand 64 years ago and the promiscuity of the playboy Prince Vajiralongkorn and the nudity of his third wife, the future queen, have been deliberately whitewashed to help protect the integrity of the royal family. The Thai people, who never knew of these negativity and scandals in their royal family, think that the members of the Thai royal family are some sort of gods that are infallible.

Lese majeste law is archaic and outdated in this modern day and age. God had created all mankind to be equal and that all man should be equal before the laws and that no one should be above the laws of the land. By the same token, no law should be created to suppress the majority just to protect the minority. As such Thailand’s lese majeste law should be abolished for good.

After Bhumibol's death...Thailand will become a republic...called "Siam Prathet" or "Sathanranarath Siam"...which is well supported by many Thai academics.

There is no doubt Bhumibol was a killer; hence, he never smiles after that fateful incident.
His mother covered up the case so that Bhumibol realized his throne ambition. The Lese Majeste law protects the Thai royalty and making them above the law.

The Red shirts are fed up with the royalty although they will not admitt it openly.

Thai culture is severly influence by Khmer...you simply cannot hide these facts. It is in a sense a successor state to the Khmer Empire. A big portion of "Suvarnabhumi" or "Golden land" is now in Thailand, not Cambodia. So it is appropriate to call a new modern in Bangkok as "Suvarnabhumi" International Airport!

Sihanouk and Bhumibol are cousin and both of them are killer for their throne. As a matter of fact them two even robbed and killed their own people for their financial gain. It seemed to them time is money.

Thai's lese majeste law has been used to manipulate justice for so long, I think the general population are fed up with it.

The monarch may be able to surpress and manipulate justice for a time. Could it be that, that time is drawing to a conclusion? I'm just curious what Thailand would look like 20 years from now.

THERE WILL BE NO TAILAND IN 20 YEARS IT WILL TURN BACK INTO THE KHMER EMPIRE!!!!

Bhumibol is not God, his excrement is also smells bad as that of the ordinary people. Why he should be regarded as a living god? Why there should be a law to protect this stupid King from being criticized?

Before 1970,khmer royal family especially Sihanouk was regarded as untouchable.Whoever criticize him personally will be regarded as traitor. Thanks to the Republican ,khmer people are no longer subjugate under that silly institution anymore.

Come on Khmerization. How can you claim you put yourself in hot water, when you stick your face in your ass like anyone else?

Khmerization you can't be harrass if you're anonymous- kuoy pichets got a point. Sound a bit self-important, I am a bit humuor by the suggestion that the Thai govt would give any minds to your assessment critical or not of their king- especially knowing that you are far out of reach in a "free world".

Youre not the first, others before you have done in their own name like lok bun heang the cartoonist- draws really entertaining depiction and not so flattering of Thai king and he isn't afraid of any hot waters.

Assess honestly, don't put your ego into it, you might start losing humble followers or readers- as most Khmer are, we don't trust people who sees themselves as important ie you see why we despise Hun sen right!

There is only one man in this country to lead. He is Hun Sen. The rest of Cambodian are useless people. Cambodia will falling in war when Hun Sen die.

Thai people will gain more peace if both red and yellow join hand in hand and try to eliminate their king before their king make the next move. Don't follow khmer foot step, like allowing the king to create a new party like Pol Pot to eliminate its own nation. Please learn from us by not going through the same mistake. There are good Thai people just like khmer people, so we don't want good Thai people to die just like us. Most of Thai people really love khmer people and some even got married to khmer women and they don't want the new gov't to take advantage of our preah vihear but their new gov't did not want to listen. Now they want the previous PM back because he was a very good PM and he be friend with all the neighbour unlike the new PM. Wisdom

Thai King brother was a Nazi born in Germany and the Thai King is American born in USA. USA wouldn't allow a Nazi become a King of Thailand so they killed a Nazi King and installed an American King in Thailand as the world can see The Nation newspaper in Thailand just like the Nation newspaper in USA. Thailand is the US franchise from McDonald restaurant to the Media like the Nation.

I think Khmerization made very valid and good points here. I think Khmerization just wants to make a point that if ABC is threatened with legal action, he might face the same. Anonymity on internet is not a surety and security, if they want, they can find you easily. Sacrava got his site blocked in Thailand for only drawing a cartoon. Khmerization is accusing the Thai king of killing his brother, a very serious accusation. I don't think Khmerization is being arrogant here because the Thai lese majeste law had been applied to a lot of normal people, not many high-profile people yet.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, a lot of normal people that do work in Thailand. Only Thai people are subjected to Thai laws. If you are a foreigner, the worst they can do to you is ban you from entering their country. Unless you happen to be already working in their country. Then tough luck.

As we Khmer have the saying, live as the natives live.

Dear editor I am agreed with you 100%, This King is trying hard to bring Abhi-Shit Vijajiv to be a Siamese's head of state(by his side ofcourse), he is strongly confident that:
1- Abhi-Shit Vijajiv is smart person, younger leader, educated, intelectual, and abbility to encroch, steai Kherland as he is now.
2- This kingKo is geting sick, older daily and before his dead he wanted to steal Khmer Prasath Preah Vihear and some more land along the border for a precious inheritance of his reing as a kowtow kingko who had ever been reclaimed the dead of his brother since 64 yeas ago.

God has more than one eye, yes you're right there is no one in this century be abowe the law.

Down to you Siamese Kingko!!!

Vijaralongkorn is not just a playboy, but a barbarian psychopath. He hates school because he was a very bad student; somehow the schools had to give him degrees because he is a prince. He let his dog jumped up on the table of state dinner and his dog sniffing and licking food on the plates that left over from the foreign guests who just finished eating.
His oldest daughter after her divorced from American husband she is more than a whore sleeping around; and his youngest daughter is ugly and grabbed other women's husbands. Only the middle daughter Princess Sirindhorn is a good woman. The mother is Queen and she is an evil, but she has more jewlery than all Queens on the planet earth. King Pumipon and his wife's father are direct grandsons of King Chulalongkorn that made King Pumipon the uncle of his wife.
Thai royal from Chakri practice ancest. Not because they want to but because the Rayal coucels make them to do that.

Khmerization,

To know who may be the real killers, you have to dig up and analize about the geopolitics at the time King Ananda Mahidol was King. Just because King Bhumibol was in the room with his brother didn't make him the real killer.
There're two: CIA or Communists. If Communists it had to be Viets who used by China, but many seems to know it was CIA, because King Ananda Mahidol was so closed to Communists.

Thai Monarchy is a puppet of the elites and powerful people, and they created the "Lese Majesty Laws" not the King. King Bhumibol was installed to keep Thais united under those elites and powerful people.

King Bhumibol and his ancestors adopted Khmer culture but Viets exterminate Khmers, don't forget that.

You are playing Viets' games.
