The Cambodian government is furious that Thomson Reuters Foundation, an international news service, had shrunk Cambodia's land mass by 4,515 sq. kilometres, reports Kampuchea Thmey.
Thomson Reuters Foundation had listed in its official website the total Cambodian territory as 176,520 sq. kilometres, instead of the official total area of 181,035 sq. kilometres recorded in all official documents.
The Cambodian Council of Ministers (CoM) had written a letter since 12th April requesting Thomson Reuters for a correction, but up until now it said it had not received any correspondences from Thomson Reuters yet.
Mr. Tith Sothea, spokesman for the CoM's Press and Quick Reaction Unit, said the Cambodian government had requested Thomson Reuters to correct the mistake as a matter of urgency. However, up until now the CoM had not received any official reply from Thomson Reuters yet, he said.
During the 22nd SEA Games hosted by Vietnam in Hanoi in 2003, the Games official website listed Cambodia's total area as 176,520 sq. kilometres. The website only change Cambodia's land mass to 181,035 sq. km after Khmer overseas strongly protested.

Thomson Reuters copied this information from a Vietnamese SEA Games hosted by Vietnam in Hanoi in 2003 like the article said. The SEA Games website in Hanoi put Khmer territory at 176.520 km2, not the correct 181,035 km2.
So much for fraternal solidarity!
Well, Thomson Reuters may be right. May be the actual area is less than 176,520 sq. kilometers because Hun Sen has given mass of land and water area to Youns. Why is the government upset now? Youns are everywhere. Cambodia lost big chunk of land as the result of recent (not to mention the past) border posts planted by Youns. Land concession to Youns is also a big loss already. It seems to me that the government wants to keep the number (area) for the record only, but the actual size of Cambodia has been disappeared gradually. What's a shame!

Thomson Reuters has not shrunk the Cambodian map. Hun Sen is the one who has shrunk the Cambodian map by allowing Yuon to plant the border markers or border demarcation posts inside Cambodian territory.
Yuon is illegally trying to plant its border demarcation posts deeper and deeper inside the Cambodian territory.
Lok Sam Rainsy is the one who has tried to defend our land by removing several of them that were planted inside the Cambodian land.
Yuon sees Lok Sam Rainsy just like Lok Sam Rainsy sees the border demarcation posts inside Cambodia. Yuon just wants him removed out of their sights.

cambodia is doing the right thing finally by confronting and correcting or educating some map makers out there for not using cambodia's official information on maps, etc... before in the past, i often see a lot of this kind of misinformation but unable to say or write or do anything about it, however now, it seems like cambodia is taking a lot of action to correction people out there.
the other wrong map i saw was in the lonely planet travel book, especially the cambodia's seas territory areas with viet/youn, lonely planet seems like they are pro viet/youn than they are care to do the right thing by using cambodia's official information like the map of cambodia. if you find a lonely planet cambodia travel book, go look at the map of cambodia, the sea coast of camobdia was violated, and i think lonely planet too should correct this by using cambodia's official map, not unilateral map of neighboring countries, etc..., really!

If you guys refer to the CIA World Factbook 2010, the total area of Cambodia of 181,035 sq. km is comprising of: 176,515 sq.km for land + 4,520 sq. km for water. So in total water + land = 181,035 sq.km. So pls stop spread the bullshit coz Thomson Reuters Foundation stated it clearly that, it is LAND ONLY. when it comes to map of cambodia all outside map makers should always get the official map from cambodia, not from second, biased or unilateral maps or unofficial maps from neighboring countries of cambodia, you know. they should always make effort to get the official cambodian map from cambodia, not from thug-like neighboring countries of cambodia, really! of course, cambodia have our own official map, and we never use the unilateral map of the neighboring countries with history of steal lands and territories from cambodia, you know!

The anger shouldn't be directed to Reuters and their prints but rather we should ask ourselves, how did Reuter came about with these information.
As we are just farmers, locals, citizens, we are foxed in a hole or frogs in a well, therefore instead of falling to the patriotic trap, we should ask how true the information is and how did a third party get it.
If they know the truth, should we continue believing the lies that our government tells us?
Its sometimes the third person that sees from the outside that let the people know what outside is like.
So, I think Cambodians who protest against Reuter is misplacing their priority and questions.
It should be directed at the government. Looks like they're not as patriotic as they claim, and have lost more of our lands then they admitted - but truth is they can't lie to foreign observers. Only to Khmer people.
i think reuters is wrong to use just the land mass areas of cambodia; when they refer to cambodia, they should always use the total areas of cambodia, not land separate from waters, etc... i think this is why khmer people is protesting or criticizing them for that. we don't want people who know nothing about cambodia to get confuse when they see 176,520sq km instead of 181,035 or 181,040sq km. they need to use the official number not some kind of fractional number or something to confuse people, you know! we demand from now on, they correct it by using 181,040sq km, instead of 176,520sq km of land mass only or whatever! what part of official map don't they understand! no more excuses for them to explain they misinformation to the world.

i encourage all khmer people to study and know in detail our map and territories, etc about cambodia, including our geography, etc... please get to know our own country in details from the villages to the land mass, waters territories, islands, boundary lines, province names and its areas, its ranking, etc, etc...make is a hobby to know our khmer geography... god bless all.
Hun Sen oftenly used swearing comment to insult others. He is a strong believer in superstition. Now it is time to ask Hun sen to take oath and swear to have a ligthning strike him or a plane/helicopter he is on will fall from the sky if the land of Cambodia has lost to Thai and Youn.
Guys, Thomson Reuters is still wrong, even if it separate the land and water (sea?) area. Tonle Sap is much bigger than 4,515km2. Wat if we include thousand of kilometres of Mekong, Steung Sangker, Steung Sen, Steung Prek Thnort rivers etc, etc, the water area are much bigger than 4,515km2. When they draw the map all map-makers include everything, land and waters, in the map, except the sea. Talking about the sea, Cambodian sea is much, much bigger than 4,515km2. Just remember, 30,000km2 of our sea has been contested by Thailand right now.
Actually this is a case for Samdech Hun Sen to deal with since with but it is not CoM's Press and Quick Reaction Unit concerned, because the background came from Vietnam during the 22nd SEA Games hosted by Vietnam in Hanoi in 2003.

If Khmer government is smart...they should ask Google map to change the wrong boundary line near Preah Vihear Temple, Poipet...which in favor of Thailand and Prek Krabao (Vinh Te canal) in favor of Vietnam, etc.
Up to now...Google did not correct the wrong map because no action or pressure on the Cambodian side!! so sad and so sorry for Khmer...

Khmer must know that this figure is correct to the reality of Cambodia. Cambodia is no longer 181035km2. If the Government is not agree with this figure, create an independent committee on border issue with all political parties involve to measure the fact.
