ASEAN manages to curb different views before erupting to be open conflict

JAKARTA, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) manages to curb different views among member countries before erupting to be open conflict as it has mechanisms to do that, an official told Xinhua in an interview on Wednesday.

Jauhari Oratmangun, the director general of ASEAN Cooperation in Indonesia's Foreign Ministry said that since the association was established 42 years ago, the region has been in a conducive condition.

"We are just fine. We never have open conflict among us. Sure, we have different views and opinions sometimes but that's normal. Even neighbors could be trapped in the condition, so are countries. Imagine if we didn't have such mechanism," said Jauhari.

He said that the mechanism consists of dialog and consultation between heads of state, foreign ministers and civil societies.

Besides, he said, ASEAN countries are mature enough to settle their problems involving other ones.

He said that the only conflict had erupted was in Vietnam in 1955-1975, that was also triggered by foreign intervention. "But in the internal ASEAN we never have conflict," he said, adding that the border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia in 2008 that was compounded by the appointment of former Thai Premier Minister Thaksin Sinawatra as Cambodian economic advisor in 2009 was just a dispute triggered by "different views and opinions".
