Cambodia acid victim seeks refuge in Malaysia

In Soklyda (L) and her aunt Ya Soknim

ABC Radio Australia

A Cambodian victim of an acid attack by a high-ranking military police official will seek asylum in Malaysia.

Ya Soknim and 18 relatives plan to apply for refugee status through the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Malaysia.

Six people convicted in the May 2008 attack - including former military police Brigadier General Chea Ratha - remain free.

Chea Ratha and five accomplices were convicted in absentia in November for the acid attack.

Scars

It left Ya Soknim with severe scarring on her face and torso.

Prosecutors accused Chea Ratha of ordering the attack after Ya Soknim's niece, beauty queen In Soklyda, broke off a sexual relationship.

Family members say they have received death threats from people associated with Chea Ratha, who remains on Interpol's wanted list.

But it is not clear if Ya Soknim and her relatives fall within the legal definition of refugees.

To KP,

The oppositions know who support them and who don't. They are working their fingers to the bones to make people see the light and build Cambodia into a better country. But the playing field has not been level, has it? The CPP had used bribes, intimidation, out-right violence to make sure that the CPP gets its way. And now they are using another scare tactic. This network of local committees is nothing but the old "korng chlorb" from the Pol Pot era. So the questions you ought to be asking is, Can the CPP be fair and use legitimate means to win the next election, or can it only run crooked campaigns? Will the CPP be willing to give anyone else a chance to build the country, or is it too afraid to lose its wealth and privileges?"

I LOVE YOUR ACTICLE, SO I REPOSTED JUST TO SAY BRAVO!

It's sad to see these people have to beg foreigners to protect them. They need to stand up and fight back, remember you only die once.

Acid Survivors Trust International Says that it is sad to see all these insensitive comments in a situation where a person has undergone such suffering. Acid violence is a form of violence in flicted because the "victim" is dehumanised and therefore it is ok to mutilate them. Please show some conssideration - Our heartfelt sympathy for the lady - she is having to uproot herself and way of life to escape this kind of attitude
