Cambodia marks world telecommunication day

PHNOM PENH, May 18, 2010 (Xinhua) - Cambodia on Tuesday marked the 145th World Telecommunications and Information Society Day to help raise awareness of the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies as well as to improve society.

Representatives from the government and the country's telecommunications industry attended the event. The theme of this year's observance is "Better Cities, Better Life with ICTs".

The Kingdom of Cambodia was admitted to be the full membership of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on April 10, 1952. This year is the first year since 1979 that has a chance to celebrate the world telecommunication day.

Cambodia decided in 2000 to open up the communications market and since then have licensed several Mobile, VoIP and ISP operators to achieve competitive rates for the Cambodian people, according to So Khun, minister of posts and telecommunication on Tuesday's celebration. "This initiative has certainly assisted in the commercial growth of Cambodia," he added.

"Although there is more to be achieved, Cambodia now has many fiber backbones throughout the country connecting Cambodia to the world wide web," So Khun said.

The data of the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication showed that the number of mobile phones used by the end of 2009 was 6.3 million, an increase from 3.8 million a year earlier.

Currently, there are nine mobile phone companies running in the country with Mobitel is known as leading in the sector and followed by the new investment from Vietnam, known as Metfone or Vietell.

The other seven are Hello, Mfone, Star Cell, Beeline, Smart Phone, QB, and Excell.

The number of mobile phone users in the country had risen quickly over past years, and competition is also growing as users have choices to select which one is his/her favorite.

"The Royal Government has developed a strategic plan whereby (e Cambodia) can be accomplished at district level by 2012, providing 90 percent of districts basic and dedicated services," So Khun said, adding that "It is expected that by 2016 100 percent of communes will have basic and dedicated ICT services."

To ensure the sustainability of a ICT based society, the Royal Government has and will continue to introduce the necessary measures, frameworks, directives and regulations for it to succeed, So Khun said.
