I am flabbergasted and dumbfounded to read the negative comments posted against Laura Mam. My heart sank even further when people try to delve into her personal life even though they do not even know anything about it. I just simply don’t understand!
As for me, I am very proud and grateful to see this young lady trying to bring back a glimpse of Khmer oldies songs. For sure, she does not speak with a clear Khmer accent, but the question is: can anybody point out any sons and daughters of Cambodian parents who are born and bred overseas who can speak clearly and fluently Khmer? Now, would we rather see this young lady turning away from her Khmer roots altogether or can we accept her as she is, i.e. trying very hard to show us what sons and daughters of Cambodian parents can achieve? Personally, I have no qualms in accepting her at face value, and, as I said earlier, I am very grateful and proud of her. Can you say the same?
For those who did not listen to her interview on NPR, I urge you to listen to what Laura said. She clearly indicated that the song “Sva Roam Monkiss” is not hers, but her rendition of a song that her aunt loves.
Please help encourage young and budding Khmer talents, they are our future.
My message to Laura: Go Khmer Girl! Proudly, show them all that you can do!

You will always get haters every where you go. If you can do better than show us. And if you don't like it don't listen to it, its that simple. Keep your negative comments to yourself. It's helping us khmer as a community. Having lived in the US for so long my khmer faded away. It is difficult for us to communicate in khmer in more complicated subjects because we were never taught these terms at home. Having parents that barely have a high school education can make it hard as well. Some of us are afraid to speak in our native tongue because our own people make fun of us for not speaking proper khmer. So please, stop the hate and show your support for this woman.
Laura is the the inspiration for those foreign born Cambodian to learn their root and be proud of who they are. For her to imerse herself in her parents'culture in a foreign land (not foreign to her if she was born in the US) shows that she has strong self-confidence, something that is a rarity among us.
