Army troops fired tear gas at red shirt barricades early on Wednesday to try to disperse the protesters near the Sala Daeng intersection in Bangkok, a witness said.

The tear gas was aimed at demonstrators close to the King Rama VI statue in front of Lumpini Park, across from Silom Road intersection.

At the red shirts' stage more than a kilometre away, musicians and speakers took turns to encourage a small crowd, most of them women, who have been camped out for days.
