Cambodia Retired Officer, Son Charged With World Cup Betting

PHNOM PENH, June 26 (Bernama) -- A retired Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) officer and his son were charged by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Friday, for betting on World Cup games, Xinhua news agency reported Saturday citing a local daily.

Deputy District Police Chief Chiv Vibol said the suspects Long Sophan Dara, 57, and his teenage son 17, were arrested at a private residence during a raid on last Monday afternoon.

A search of the residence discovered some US$30 and a book of betting receipts related to World Cup matches.

Deputy prosecutor Koeu Bunnara said the bookmakers could face fines of between US$1,250 to US$5,000 and a maximum sentence of five years in prison if they are convicted.

On June 9, Prime Minister Hun Sen told Cambodians to refrain from betting on World Cup matches and instructed police to crack down on football-oriented gambling operations.

So far, there were nine Cambodians arrested for running a gambling ring.

enough already! corruption has gotten to stop. many people got rich already, so stop being so greedy forever, ok! give other people an opportunity to better themselves, etc... if you're too greedy, it can backfire on you, then you'll end up losing it all. so, be smart and think about it for a change, ok! enough already. it the past, there's not enough law to prevent corruption, etc; but nowadays, you have to understand the law, ok! law don't really favor anyone; law is equal for all! god bless.

Poor General, you have been caught by the police, because you have no backing, not because of your wrong doing. If you was well connected with Sok An or other powerfull DOGS. you would have been safe....

Well, well, well,

This is the wake up call to everyone who are under the shade of the RGC. It's only a matter of time that they will crucify you all one by one to serve their dirty trick with their political agenda. Just wait for your turn whilst your are working so bloody hard to please them even go extra miles against your conscience.

thats a joke . they cant find real criminals so they got small gamblers who use their own money to bet on the ballgame . police need to find better things to do .

The bet of money on the matches of the world cup, once every 4 years must be tolerated and should not be prohibited by law.
Because many countries of the world authorize this type of bets.
When we forbid these bets because there is social unrest in Cambodia it means clearly that Cambodians are not mature people, incapable to be reasonable and to control themselves?

This ban is ridiculous policy.

hey, sometimes, it's the petty things that leads up to worst thing, especially if you ignore it. in gov't services, there's not such thing as petty thing. law is law, no excuses can justify illegal activity, really! i say change that kind of mentality already. it's the old habit that can lead to worst disservice to the country, etc... think about it. that's why it is important to obey all law, regardless. i mean, someone has gotten to enforce the rule of law, etc..., you know! it's call attention to detail! didn't they teach you that in school? go figure!
