ROYAL adviser Prince Sisowath Thomico held a press conference Monday to emphasise that King Father Norodom Sihanouk will not address political issues during his scheduled visit to Hanoi this week, following appeals that the visit be used as an opportunity to discuss the administration of former Cambodian territories in South Vietnam.
“The King Father was invited by the Vietnamese president to pay a friendship visit; therefore I think that the visit will be used to boost good relations between the governments of Vietnam and Cambodia, and between the people of the two countries,” the prince said.
Sihanouk will not “interfere in political affairs”, but will instead act as an “independent symbol of the Kingdom of Cambodia, in accordance with the Kingdom’s constitution”, he said.
Yim Sovann, spokesman for the opposition Sam Rainsy Party, said Monday that Sihanouk was entitled to raise the issue of Kampuchea Krom.
“I hope that the King Father will play his role as stated in the Kingdom’s Constitution as the guarantor of territorial sovereignty,” he said.
In a statement released Sunday, Son Soubert, vice president of the Khmer People’s National Liberation Front, said Sihanouk’s visit could usher in “a new era of frank cooperation” between the two countries.
When contacted on Monday, however, Son Soubert said it was unlikely that sovereignty issues would be discussed. “As the King Father said in his statement that the visit is private and non-political, I don’t expect any of the meetings to be related to border sovereignty,” he said.

Leave him alone. The problem between Vietnam and Cambodia cannot be solved with this kind of visit or anyone who is representing the current government. Vietnam installed this government in 1979 who are now members of CPP. CPP won the election, formed the government. The government under CPP orchestrates the nation foreign policies. Let CPP do whatever they want with the country. History and the people will be the judge.
If you are concerned about the border issues, Vietnam and Cambodia border issue cannot be solved by removing the border posts like the opposition leader did recently. That was pure silly. The action revealed the lack of strategic thinking.
Cambodia’s hope depends on all of you. Your ability to think critically and clearly is vital the for the survival of the nation. Go back to school if you haven’t finish school. Make sure that our next generation are more educated than we are. This means, if your children or any of your younger relatives are not in school encourage them to go back to school. Read as much as you can from different sources. Don’t believe what you see and hear on the internet right away. Make sure you compare a few sources before making up your mind.
Stop depending on any individual to save our nation- not the former king, not the current Prime Minister, nor anyone one in the opposition party. Thus far, they showed no credible vision for Cambodia.
Stop viewing politics via political party’s perspective or you will end up being manipulated by the political operators.
I see many who are now involved in politics simply to gain fame and to secure a position and worst wanted to be prime minister at any cost. Those are the worst kind.
Realizing that you will need someone to lead. Don’t worry. A natural leader will emerge and you will recognize him/her.
Education, economic freedom, and democracy with functional institutions will be the solution to nation problems.
