Bangkok - Police arrested a former nurse as a suspected seller of "child ghosts" after 14 pickled foetuses were found in an abandoned house in north-eastern Thailand, media reports said Tuesday.

Police said Naengnoi Kaan admitted to buying foetuses from a woman who performed illegal abortions in Ubon Ratchathani province on the border with Laos and Cambodia to sell as "luk krok," or "child ghosts," believed to bring good luck, the Bangkok Post reported, citing police.

The case came to police attention after a scavenger found 14 bottles of pickled foetuses in an abandoned shophouse that belonged to one of Naengnoi's relatives.

Police said the nurse had allegedly stored the foetuses in the shophouse while awaiting orders from prospective customers.

Luk krok, according to Thai superstition, are particularly helpful for winning lotteries.

Kaun krok is part of a most disgusting and horrific black magic rite that used to be practiced in Cambodia. it is said to bring it's wearer (usually a soldier or man of war) mana, invincibility or invisibility. For the foetus to be effective the wearer has to receive the consent of the pregnant woman: the man would ask her innocently, "please give me the child", to which she would agree, believing her husband was only expressing his love for their child. Having received the consent the man would slit her belly and cut away the living foetus which he would dry over a fire while chanting magic incantations. In the late sixties a Khmer author by the pen name of Mitr Sakhon wrote a story set in Angkorian period titled "Kaun krok Khmau" built around this magic practice. Does anyone on this blog remember? During the Khmer Republic days it is rumoured that a number of leaders use these kaun krok. It is said for example that General In Tam wore one. On reflection i wonder if that black magic practice any more abominable than when a foetus is aborted/gassed/killed with acid in his/her mother's womb during abortion? who are the barbarians?

Remind me of the Khmer movie Kun Chang, Kun Cheng or something when the man slice his wife stomach and pull out the fetus.

Don't you think that these kinds of practices are without consequence-child sacrifice is abomination to the God who gives life. Think about it; your father and mother did not give you life, they only planted a seed-life comes from Creator, God. Just like gardening; you plant a seed and hopes that that seed will grow with proper rain falls. You can't make that seed grow by your own power. You can only provide a good environment and the rest is up to the one who can make it to grow.
