Trouble in The East

Former monarch Sihanouk and his family on their private visit to Hanoi (Photo: Vietnam News)
"This, there will be one day and we will turn into Champa No. 2!
Cambodia will be Champa No. 2!
All your children, yes you all, [will live under] Champa No. 2!
... But now, I am freeing myself up!" - Ponhea Krek villager who lost his lands to Vietnamese encroachment

Op-Ed by MP

SO much for fraternity and territorial integrity, heh?

If one could tame tigers and turn them into pillows to rest on, warned Khmer forefathers, then one could consider having the Vietnamese as one’s friends!

Where is Cambodia now, after all the recent turmoil and grief?

The violation of Cambodian sovereignty by way of the Ho Chi Minh Trail across the eastern provinces with Sihanouk's connivance was a crucial factor in the coup against him. Lon Nol and his associates have been universally blamed for plunging the nation into the abyss, but the most tragic error surely must rest with those individuals who thought (and evidently still believe) they had the tiger tamed enough to gamble the nation and its survival on their conviction.

So Hanoi won the war against US imperialism and 'liberated' the Khmer people from the clutches of Pol Pot and his radicalism. But where was this radicalism fermented in the first instance if not through the collective psyche of a people who have for centuries been at the receiving end of humiliation and oppression at the hands of foreign yoke and traitors in their midst?

Are the Khmer people easily given to paranoia or do they have legitimate causes for their anxiety and concerns as regards their dominant, scheming neighbours to the East? What has Hanoi done to remove the causes of those negative emotions that the Khmer people have towards its empirical repression of their nation and its persistent disregard for their dignity, beside removing one murderous regime and replacing it with a not so murderous one?

At present, Khmer people everywhere may not share the same universal experience of a people completely submerged as the ancient nation of Champa had once done, but for those Khmer folk living along the border whose lands and livelihoods have been robbed by the Vietnamese and their compliant Cambodian authorities, there is only utter pain and anguish of not being able to live and die on their ancestral soil.

Some of us accustomed to urban environments may find it difficult to imagine the emotional attachment rural people have towards their farms or villages - every tree, lake, stream, wat and prasat is embedded in their very soul and consciousness constituting in their inextricable total a self-contained universe from which separation does but refutes their existence as a community and denies them as living humans.

One elderly villager's warning about his country facing the grave risk of following Champa's example comes as an echo of an imprisoned heart that clearly discerns truth and danger through its bitter experience of realities. Clearly, this gentleman is not a politician, an actor, an orator of great speeches, and appears oblivious of the potential punishment that his outspoken protestations may bring upon himself vis-à-vis the local authority. Such is the courage of someone who has lost all that was dear to him and his community; for this gentleman and his immediate world Champa is no projectable scenario or realisable nightmare, but a fait accompli.

Other villages, towns and districts will come to terms with his message when their turn arrives. For now though the King and his entourage on their private visit to the land of our fraternal neighbours on public expense offer the nation far better diversion on state controlled TV channels than does any visit to dreary border markers in the country’s rural backwaters.

Enjoy the weekend!

i think the king and the royal family should explain or educate khmer people and cambodia about what they are doing in youn? otherwise, khmer people from all walks of life might misunderstand the king and the royal family for their private visit to youn country. khmer people are curious about this visit to youn country by our royal family. please explain in public to our khmer people and country; this way we can understand better the king and royal family's good intention, etc... they say communication is the key to avoid misunderstanding and misinformation, etc... thank you and god bless the king and the royal family.

hey, stop the name calling , etc! we know people are mad, but we should resort to rancor and name calling, etc, ok! if you others to do you a favor, you don't be mean to them, ok! instead use proper etiquette and proper protocol, etc, ok! screaming and yelling like a psycho solves nothing for anybody, really!

12:50 PM,
Not all Khmers misunderstood the good intention of the King visited Yuon, but the eastern region, Yuon encraoching is a biggest trouble and most Khmers knew already that Yuon now fake Khmers are among CPP.
We Khmers all have to scream for the world to know these evil Yuon are doing to our land.
Cambodia needs China to interfer with Yuon aggression, because the US embrace Yuon not us.

Vietnam will be China's new province, but Cambodia will never be "Champa". She will always be Cambodia.

In Aust, they have a law to protect its own teritory and boundary. E.g. there were a few fishing boats from Indonesia and accidentally came into Aust's water, Did you know what happen next? they comfiscated the boats and place all the men in the detention centre for entering their water illegally. This is what we called "border protection". The gov't are working on behalf of its population. So, what happen to Khemer gov't, why are you playing this evil games for so long and still think you can get away from it?. God can see all the evil acts but he is very sorry for all of their actions. Life is very short yet still acted so cruel toward one another and when are you all going to wake up. acknowleding about rights and justice for all. Geeee

i know china is real khmer hope for sound or fair solution for khmer people with youn because america and french seemed to always favor youn, despite historical facts that youn encrouched on cambodia, etc... i don't understand why america and french favored youn people over khmer people. is it because they think youn used roman alphabet like english or french or something else? i hope that's not the case because youn sounds so different from either english or french althought they adopted the roman alphabet in their language like english and french. maybe someone who is an exper at why america and france favored youn country over cambodia? no wonder khmer leaders seemed to favor china instead. then they wonder why? i think china can help bring justice and solve khmer/youn issue for cambodia. the west? it is questionable! that's why khmer people tend to look more toward china, the asia giant, believe it or not, china can help cambodia in many ways. plus, geographically speaking too, china is next door to cambodia as well. and cambodia and china always have great friendship and understanding and cooperation for a long long time now. god bless cambodia and china nation.

Before he died, Pol Pot said:
I wish Khmer from the East, the West and Khmer Kandal are UNITED!!!

What Sihanouk will bring back to Cambodia after the trip to Hanoi?

1;15PM.
What I heard from some White people said "Yuon adopted Latin and adopted Roman Catholic." That's why Barang hate Khmers because of our superiority minds.
I agree that China could help Khmers.

1:28 PM,
Ask What will the King plan for his country before he leaves this earth?

Don't worry too much, believe in FATE, our fates will be better, while Yuon fate will go down for killing too many million Khmers and Laos.

I cannot trust neither Vietcongs nor communist China. China is still a repressive regime in their current government, if allowed can only help dictator Hun Sen to oppress Khmer even more. As dictator Hun Sen many times has said, "China's aid do not have string-attached! While American's aid do!"

At any cost and to preserve Khmer's last-standing land, we Khmer must avoid staying close to Vietnam, Thailand, and China.

Making friends with China, only when it turns democratic.

Some demons keep cursing King Sihanouk, but they cannot touch him. He was placed by FATE to a poor country full of demons, and he is an ultimate survivor of world monarchy after Queen Elizabeth I. God save King Sihanouk.
