US Investors on Landmark Visit To Cambodia

“There is also the potential for modernizing Cambodian rice production, which the US should consider investing in.”
A large group of US investors are in Cambodia this week in a sign that more American businesses want to move into the country’s marketplace.

The delegation, led by US-Asean Business Council, aims to learn more about the market and represents the biggest delegation ever organized by the group.

Chevron, Bunge, ConocoPhillips, General Dynamics, General Electric, Johnson and Johnson, IBM, and JP Morgan will all take part.

“We have companies from a wide range of sectors, and there are companies that have been established there for quite a while that have quite a presence there already,” Anthony Nelson, a spokesman for the US-Asean Business Council, told VOA Khmer ahead of the trip. “There are some companies that are just starting there, and there are companies that are looking to see what kind of opportunities exist in Cambodia.”

For General Dynamics, a defense industry contractor, the trip is a first.

“This trip is for familiarization purposes,” company spokesman Rob Doolittle said. “There is no area of particular interest that we have identified at this time.”

The team is scheduled to meet senior officials at the Council of Ministers, the ministries of Finance and Trade, and the Council for the Development of Cambodia.

Cambodia could be especially attractive to technology investors, Pan Sorasak, secretary of state for the Ministry of Commerce, has said.

“There is also the potential for modernizing Cambodian rice production, which the US should consider investing in,” he said in an earlier interview. “And there is tourism, where we can have cooperation among airlines.”

Cambodia runs a heavy trade imbalance with the US, which imports about $2 billion in goods each year while exporting only about $200 million.

Earlier this year, Cambodia was removed from a trade blacklist by the US administration, making more investment more likely.

change start with oneself, hello! all i hear here is opposition cursing everybody who disagree with them. my god, imagine if they were to win election. where would cambodia be today? maybe they are a bunch of hypocrites. smart, educated people don't buy them easily. a lot of time, they never give solution or constructive criticism, instead they always use their dirty political comments which i think most people hated them for that! they are so divisive for cambodia. and they called themselves patriots or khmer leaders? god forbid they ever lead the country! they are so bias; how can anyone express their view with them? go figure!

After Sam Rainsy talk to the US law maker, instead of staying away from the most corrupted country (as the opposition party claim)in the world, the US investors want to invest more money in Cambodia !!!! Go figure !!!

Maybe when they look straight in his eyes they can see the exaggerated claims !!!!

Base on the opposition claim, Cambodia is owned by Viet Nam. Did the US investors have the permission from Viet Nam to invest in Cambodia ??????

I want a new leader in Cambodia too, but I just don't like the opposition method.

i think opposition and their members are very deceitful people; you can tell by their tone of voice, their rancor, their putting people down, their bias views, their disrespectful manner, etc... they have bad attitide problem with gov't in cambodia by calling everybody there "criminals". now, if that's not defamation, then what is? even cambodia have law against defamation of public officials, etc..., you know. opposition called everybody they looked down upon as "KR criminals". god figure! they even start calling naming before the judge's ruling, etc... anybody can tell they are a bunch of hypocrites, unless they are too ignorant or uneducated to buy into that. i think american people and american gov't official are smarter and highly educated than that to buy into it without property check and verfication, fairness, justice, etc... that's why i love america very much, you know. i will always praise that america and cambodia will be friends for life. yes, my beloved america can help to make all the real difference in cambodia. america can help to take cambodia into the right direction when they work with camobdian officials, etc... those who don't love america is behind time and was being isolated and ignorant for too long. cambodia embraces and welcomes america in all reforms in my country cambodia. god bless cambodia.
