Abhisit outmanoeuvred by Hun Sen on disputed temple [-War threat against Cambodia?]

"If Cambodia insists on managing Preah Vihear, Thailand should respond in kind by closing the borders and stopping all trade with its neighbour. This would be the first warning. Thai soldiers on the border are on high alert. If the first warning goes unheeded, we should reserve the right, under our sovereignty, to drive out any nationals infringing upon our land."
THE DISPUTE between Thailand and Cambodia over the Preah Vihear temple complex has once again flared up to rattle the national psyche. However, this time the Abhisit government appears to be inept in its diplomatic manoeuvring, and completelyunprepared for the campaign by Cambodian Prime minister Hun Sen.

After securing World Heritage status for Preah Vihear, Cambodia is now launching a follow-up drive to manage the ancient site, which lies on a mountainside in what is currently Cambodian territory, but which can be accessed only from the Thai side of the border demarcation.

A 21-member Unesco committee has been meeting in Brazil this week and, it will be voting on whether to approve the Cambodian management plan for Preah Vihear. If the approval is effected, Thailand could technically lose sovereignty over 4.6 square kilometres of disputed land near the 11th-century Khmer temple, as well as the area around the temple.

Thailand appears to be totally isolated on the issue. Most of the major powers are backing Cambodia on the management plan for the temple. This will allow interested parties a window of opportunity to take part in the development project for Preah Vihear, plus other business deals with Cambodia afterward.

Cambodia is trying every means to squeeze the territory from Thailand. The implication from this Unesco meeting is significant, for the claim over the land territory will have implications for maritime claims in the Gulf of Thailand, which are rich in oil and natural gas deposits.

In 1962, the International Court of Justice ruled that Cambodia had sovereignty over Preah Vihear. Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat, the then prime minister, cried emotionally when he told the nation via a live radio broadcast that having to lose the temple to Cambodia was one of the darkest moments in the country's history. Thai soldiers guarding Preah Vihear pulled out the poles carrying the Thai flag and left the area with heavy hearts.

At the time, Thailand tacitly honoured - but did not accept - the International Court of Justice's ruling. Thailand's position then, as now, is that it reserves the right to appeal against the court's ruling when the time is appropriate.

Noppadon Pattama, the foreign minsiter during the Samak government, signed a memorandum of understanding with Cambodia over the World Heritage status for Preah Vihear. This MOU was approved afterwards by the Cabinet. Later, the Constitution Court ruled that the MOU was unconstitutional because it is considered an international agreement - and such agreements must be approved by the Thai National Assembly first.

Subsequent governments have not done anything to address this mistake. Now it is assumed that Preah Vihear is a Unesco-approved World Heritage site. And Cambodia is moving on with its proposed management plan without any input from Thailand.

Abhisit is now in deep trouble because his government has done nothing to counter the relentless Cambodian campaign. So far, Thailand has threatened to withdraw from the United Nations World Heritage Convention if its committee approves the Cambodian management plan to the disputed temple, even though the long-standing boundary demarcation issue has not yet been resolved.

Moreover, it looks like Thailand could lose more territories as a result of this ploy. Thailand lost Laos and several areas of Cambodia to France during the colonial period. It seems that history is repeating itself.

But now the situation is even more complicated. In 1962, the Thai people were united in their hearts and minds over the Preah Vihear issue. Now they are divided, with many looking at the dispute as a political diversion or an issue of extreme nationalism. In fact, it is a security and sovereignty issue.

By failing to block Cambodia's plan from the outset, Abhisit has allowed the dispute to spiral out of control.

If Cambodia insists on managing Preah Vihear, Thailand should respond in kind by closing the borders and stopping all trade with its neighbour. This would be the first warning. Thai soldiers on the border are on high alert. If the first warning goes unheeded, we should reserve the right, under our sovereignty, to drive out any nationals infringing upon our land.

What a major embarrassment to Thailand in the eyes of the world!

Even Thai academics view what the Abhisit administration is doing is shameful all other Thais who truly belive the temple was built by Cambodian King on Cambodian land...and the ICJ verdict some 48 years ago was fair based on the evidents which were presented at the time.

Sok An declared: "We have given Thailand too much already"!!

Absolutely true...where was Thailand 900 years ago? Haven't Thailand got enough of Khmer already? In all about 198,115 sq. mi. or 513,120 km2.

One may not know, the current Thai language contains about 2500 Khmer words or 40% of the Thai language.

No other other cultures on the planets are closely similar than Thai and Khmer (perhaps Laotian).

Thai and Khmer use the same numerals.

No other Monarchy are related or in close contact to each other than Khmer and Thai.

Isn't it time that we get along instead of fostering hate and greed toward one another?

As Thaksin puts it...wouldn't it be good if we all progress together?

God Bless HM Bhumibol and HM Sihanouk as both share the same Khmer-Thai ancestry!

Watch out people. Thailand is a wounded Tiger of Southeast Asia. If the greedy Viets can still get the Khmer territory and islands from Hun Sen, then the wounded Thailand wants some as well. It is all because of Hun Sen who let Hanoi slap his face repeatedly as a sissy boy. However, Hun Sen is know to be strong at arresting and killing the Cambodians at home.

Thailand is desperate and greedy for more Cambodia's territory now. It has all the prepartions to take on Hun Sen's army. Thailand is frustrated at the continual success of the Viets for being able to acquire more and more Cambodia's territory while Thailand can't even get none and can't even push the French-made border line between Siam and IndoChina. Thailand is wounded and now wants to start kicking some asses. The first ass to be kicked is of course that of Hun Sen. Lol. But Hun Sen says that his ass is already owned by Hanoi so the Thais have to go through the Viets first. Lol. Thailand pointing finger at Hanoi, saying "I beat you kicked your ass in the past, and I will kick and beat your ass again." Lol. Hanoi says: "We aint scare of you inexperienced Thailand, we beat everyone coming our way, fool." Lol. Thailand says that oh yeah, we are good at cursing you out, you Viets. Haoi says back, "Paleese, fool, keep trying!". At the end, Thailand is just a bundle of frustration losing the Mekong Delta Region to the Viets, losing Cambodia to the French, and now have to be annoyed all over again by the long rival Viets. Lol. Hun Sen is supposed on Thailand side because culture is thicker than blood, but Hun Sen chooses to be a part of Hanoi because of the ancient blood bond with the ancient proto-Mon-Khmer people of Hanoi. Lol. Thailand claims that they are the direct heirs to the Khmer empire, but the Hanoi says that they are the direct Heirs to the Khmer Empire because they were part of the original Mon-Khmer people in Northern Vietnam while the Tais were strangers from Nanchao instead. Now Thais are completely frustrated and they want to kick some butts. Lol.

Since Hun Sen was a Khmer Rouge commander, now a Khmer Rouge leader and had many of his political opponents and journalists assassinated, I wonder if he have any plan to assassinate the Thai Prime Minister (Ahbullshit Vejjajiva)?

"Kinh is the largest population in Vietnam. It belongs to Mon-Khmer linguistically, but there is no last word for its origin. There are three hypotheses for the homeland of Kinh. The formation of Kinh population is also hypothesized to have occurred by one of two different modes. One is demic diffusion of Mon-Khmer, the other is Daic population assimilated by Mon-Khmer. Population studies such as dermatoglyphics can be used to determine the relevant mode. Fingerprints, palm prints, and sole prints of 135 individuals from Kinh populations all over Vietnam were collected in this project. Principle component analysis and dendrogram analysis were done based on the dermatoglyphic data of populations from south China and Vietnam. Kinh Vietnamese was found to be quite close to Deang and Blang, which belong to the Mon-Khmer group, but are not closely related to the Daic populations. This study supports the demic diffusion mode of the formation of the Kinh population. The interaction with the Daic population was never a significant course in the formation of Kinh."

Yep, the Viet-Kinh belong to the ancient Mon-Khmer group, not Tai. Lol.

It is not Youns and Siems' faults, about Khmer losing their land, it is totally up to Ah dump Khmer leaders, if they are still stupid, the whole Cambodia will be gone in the near future.

please why are you trying so hard to connect the Kinh to the Khmer now? You think since Khmer and Thai are having a dispute over their cultural heritage that you can sneak in and pretend kinship to the Khmer so you can as well claim benefits to Khmer heritage like Thailand has?

The truth of the mather is, linguistically, Kinh and Mon-Khmer are as far apart as an Anglo-Saxon language and a Chinese Language.

Now there are some confused scientist who were mislead or did small researched concluded that they were similar. Those researchers based it off the fact that these two language share a lot of similarities in vocabulary - not noting that these two cultured had an interaction of almost a 1000 years now. How wouldn't they be similar if they had been in contact for that long?

The truth is Vietnamese language, the Kinh language, is fundamentally different from all Mon-Khmer language. None of the dozens of branches of the so called Mon-Khmer language uses any tonal deflection.

Vietnamese, Tai, and Chinese on other hand, all shared this fundamental characteristics.

Mon-Khmer is a guttural language. It does not distinguish between tones and stresses or phenomes. Anyway you say a word, it will have the same meaning. Not so, in Kinh Vietnamese, Tai Thai, or any Chinese subgroups.

Khmer and the Mon-Khmer branch belongs to only indigenous people in Southeast Asia, and neither Tai nor Kinh are indigenous to the region. Period.

If the WHC do not accept Cambodia's Management plan of Preah Vihear temple, The royal government of cambodia must riase this problem to the international court of justice because WHC don't respect the verdict of ICJ. ICJ's verdict say that preah vihear temple and sorrounding area of preah vihear belong to cambodia according to the french-siame map....which reconised by both cambodia and thailand...
