At 11:07 AM, the judge read the verdict for Duch. No lifetime jail because of the cooperation from Duch and his regret, the majority has decided to sentence Duch to 35 years of jail time. However, he will be deducted for his time already in jail.

- 11:15 Also guilty of grave breaches of the geneva conventions, including wilful killing, torture, willfully causing great suffering and injury, depriving civilians and prisoners of war of the right to a fair trial, and unlawful confinement of civilians. There was no finding of guilt for domestic crimes of pre-meditated murder and torture.
- 11:15 Emotions are running high. Many are crying.

Legal and Judicial Reform
The Royal Government has improved legal and judicial systems by focusing on the development of a sound legal framework and modernization of the laws, as well as by laying out necessary strategies and measures to enhance the competence, independence and impartiality of the judiciary, which are crucial to strengthening the rule of law. In the third legislature, a total of 140 laws were promulgated including three major codes- the Criminal Procedure Code, the Civil Procedure Code and the Civil Code. The Royal Government has focused on improving the judiciary by enhancing the competency and accountability of judges through initial and continual training and the adoption of the Codes of Ethics for Judges and Prosecutors. Disciplinary measures have been carried out by the Supreme Council of the Magistracy. The Royal Government has also established centers for legal services in the number of the district in order to institutionalize dispute resolution mechanisms outside the court system in Cambodia in order to reduce the backlog at the courts.
The Royal Government will continue implementing the legal and judicial reform strategy in order to achieve its seven strategic objectives. It will also focus more on the early adoption of major fundamental laws such as the Penal Code, the Anti-Corruption Law, the Law on the Statutes of Judges and Prosecutors, the Law on the Organization and Functioning of the Courts and the Law on the Amendment of the Law on the Organization and Functioning of the Supreme Council of the Magistracy. At the same time, the Royal Government will continue to organize programs to disseminate knowledge of laws and procedures to the public and provide legal training to law-enforcement officials with the aim of improving awareness and proper enforcement of the laws. In the fourth legislature, the Royal Government will continue to address the following priorities: (1) enhancement of the competency of Judges and Prosecutors through continued high quality training and initial professional training, and enhancing the accountability of judges and prosecutors by promulgating the statutes for Judges and Prosecutors, and by taking strict disciplinary actions in close cooperation with the Supreme Council of the Magistracy; (2) development of the support mechanisms to serve the judicial sector- including the introduction of the statutes for the court clerks, the notaries and the bailiffs; and the operational functioning of professional training schools for the above officials in order to ensure their proper qualifications and professionalism; (3) provision of legal aid- especially through provision of lawyers to poor citizens to help protect their rights and interests at court; and, (4) further promotion of the mechanisms for dispute resolution outside of the court system in order to improve and strengthen the culture of harmonious co-existence of people in peace and solidarity.

Killing is a crime no matter who were killed.But most DUCH's victims were all khmer rouge cadres(hou nim,hou yun,chao seng,phouk chhay etc...) or khmer rouge supporters.All the old officials,civilians and military personels from the previous regime were all killed wherever they were found.Those people were never brought to S-21
In all Duch still is my hero because he did the right thing by killing all his communist colleagues who killed all my republicans compatriots.My hat off for you DUCHY.
Duch was just one of the killers. Many other killers are still running free and some were dead due to the law of nature by having diseases and all.
The harshest punishment shoild glo to people like Ieng Sary, Ieng Thirith, Nuon Chea, and Khieu Samphan and their creators...

It is not enough for this guy who was a real killer of the innocent Cambodians.
A life sentence is better word for this killer. For Cambodians will, he must be hanged in the general public for his cruelty made by him during his time in Tuol Sleng
S-21 central prison of the Khmer Rouge (1975-79).
But it is also great achievement of the Extraordinary Chamber in the Court of Cambodia (ECCC). This court must work faster than before for the Dossier 002 because the 4 gangs are very very old or they might die before trial.
This year is the best time for the gangs (Nuon Chea, Ieng Sary, Khieu Samphan and Ieng Thirith) trial. We are waiting for their sentence very soon. The soonest is the best.

from Free Speech and Lands' Grabs by Hun Sen's Hanoi puppet regime.
And when the main culprit leader of this khmer people genocide named Norodom Sihanouk will he be on trial in ECCC????
The case #1 is done and the case #2, #3, and so on are much more important so they should be done in the shorter period of time. To me and many more, Duch should received death sentence compare with the crime he committed.

I agree with your good ideas, but you forget some of the big killers
Those are Sihanouk, Hun Xen, Kiet Chhon, Hor Nam Hong, and there are more and more still run free with Hun Xen Gov.
His crime is still a crime but I give him a tiny bit of credit on the side - he killed a bunch of Viet agents as well, as soon as KR found out that the Viet rats were everywhere all around them. It was toooooooo....... late Duchy! Khmers like you are too smart for your own good! The Viets beat you to the "prize" and make you and your bosses pay for it.
