Cambodia, Jul. 17, 2010 (Xinhua News Agency) -- "Field Training Exercise", the second phase of large scale military exercise " Angkor Sentinel 2010", officially kicked off on Saturday at the presence of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen in Kompong Speu province, about 50 km from Phnom Penh.
Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Kheng, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Tea Banh and Pal Saraenn, commander-in-chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) attended the events, and about 1,000 forces from more than 20 countries joined the multi-national peacekeeping operations.
Speaking at the opening of "Field Training Exercise (FTX)", Hun Sen said that he "feels great pride for his country has the ability to hold such size and important peacekeeping exercise".
FTX was the second of two forms of Multi-National Exercise Training, named as "Angkor Sentinel 2010" with the participation from many countries after the first part of the "Command Post Exercise (CPX)" began on July 12.
The field training exercise consists of lane training in checkpoint operations, patrolling, securing a distribution site, convoy operations, conducting a cordon and search, and securing disarmament area.
Both military exercises with official name as "Angkor Sentinel 2010" -- are part of the Global Peace Operations Initiatives ( GPOI), a UN-U.S. peacekeeping-training program for strengthening peace and security. The military exercise will be conducted through July 30.
Moeng Somphan, secretary of state of Ministry of Defense said earlier that the exercise "aimed at enhancing military-civil capacity for peacekeeping operation," and it "not only provide the great opportunities for the RCAF and multi-national forces in performing some regional missions but also give us a chance to demonstrate our capacity, coordination, and cooperation."
Of those forces, the largest number come from Cambodia as a host country and from the United States, the co-organizer of the exercise.
The other participating countries, the majority of which are the members of the United Nations, include France, Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia, India, Italy, Germany, Japan, Mongolia and the United Kingdom among others.
