Khmer Rouge's chief jailer found guilty of war crimes, will spend 19 years in Cambodia prison

Jul 26, 2010

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) - A U.N.-backed tribunal has found the Khmer Rouge's chief jailer guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity and says he will spend the next 19 years behind bars.

Kaing Guek Eav, also known as Duch, listened impassively Monday as the chief judge read out the verdict - the first handed down against a senior member of the genocidal regime blamed for the deaths of 1.7 million people during their 1975-79 reign of terror.

Judge Nil Nonn noted that the defendant admitted to heading Tuol Sleng, a top-secret detention center for the worst "enemies" of the state, where more than 16,000 people were killed, many after being tortured.

The court sentenced him to 35 years in prison, but shaved off the 11 years he's already spent in detention and five more for cooperating with the court.

Bit of confusion as to whether it's 19 years or 30, but 19 is fully inadequate. He deserves to spend a long, long life rotting behind bars with no realistic possibility of ever being released. 19 years doesn't do that.

some rapists may serve as long as
20 years in prison. sentencing this guy to 19 or 35 years is a joke.

I hope he shares his bed in prison with a rapist!!!

now he is 67 and if he spends 19 more years in prison, it is liking that he would still alive at the age of 86. during the 19 years that is coming, we don't know what will happen in Cambodia, and he also has chance to have his sentence farther reduced, let say during king's birthdays or prime minister hun sen's birthdays. who know!

He should serve life in prison for the crime he committed.

Oh, don't worry!

When they let him out, he will be an old man and it only needs a slight blow to his head to finish him off.

Many of us will be waiting for him then if he is still alive by that time.

Has the God of Israel has something to do with his conversion for the light sentence?

Jesus, what's your answer?

365 x 30 = 10950 days (after 5 years reduction),
10950 days / 16,000 lives = 0.684375 day/life,
So each life worth about 16h30m of his jail time. It's a slap in the face of the victims and surviving relatives.

He can live after his jail term or die tomorrow.

- If he dies tomorrow, the jail time per life calculation is even worse, but it satisfies the life term sentence (if the court did give him life time).

- If he continue to live pass his jail term then this sentence has not given justice to the victims. The calculation above shows the value of the victim's life this court give (far much less than an animal)

What does this court think?

The case #1 is done and the case #2, #3, and so on are much more important so they should be done in the shorter period of time. To me and many more, Duch should received death sentence compare with the crime he committed.
