PM Abhisit orders Suwit to UNESCO ‘heritage’ meeting on Preah Vihear temple

BANGKOK, July 25 (MCOT online news)- As the UNESCO World Heritage Committee (WHC) meeting in Brazil starts Sunday, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said he had ordered Thailand’s to attend the session and to also object to Cambodia’s unilateral management plan for the disputed environs of the ancient Preah Vihear temple.

His order that Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suwit Khunkitti, leading the Thai delegation to the 34th session of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural (UNESCO) world heritage committee meeting ending August 3 in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia, came after the Yellow Shirt People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) activist group urged the government to boycott the meeting.

Cambodia is scheduled to submit its management plan expected to include the disputed 4.6-square kilometre overlapping claim area near Preah Vihear temple to the WHC during the meeting.

The PAD also demanded that the Thai government take further action against listing the temple as a World Heritage site.

Mr Abhisit said during his weekly TV and radio address that his government has been following the issue closely and the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs would have to lodge a protest if it is found that its neighbour Cambodia is violating Thai territorial sovereignty.

He said his government would not recognise the Cambodian map expected to be submitted to the WHC during the session, as the 1962 ruling of the International Court of Justice which awarded the 11thcentury Preah Vihear temple to Cambodia did not demarcate the border between the two countries.

The two countries have been locked in nationalist tensions and a troop standoff at their disputed border since July 2008, when Preah Vihear temple was granted UNESCO World Heritage status.

Mr Abhisit said Thailand would not gain anything by boycotting the heritage meeting as the international community would then be able to hear only Cambodia’s explanations on the issue.

If the heritage committee allows Cambodia to apply its proposed management plan, Thailand still has the right to object and has mapped actions to systematically oppose decision, Mr Abhisit said.

He gave assurances to the Thai people that his government will do its best to protect the country’s interests.

You Thai government and Thai people are playing the losing game . You got 10 years to decide if you agree with the International Court or not on the Preas Vihear case but you didn't do anything till almost 50 years later ... it's too late to do anything now. From now on, no matter what you are going to do you are not going to take Preas Vihear back .

U.S. Cambodia Bilateral Dialogue

Released in Phnom Penh, May 21, 2010

U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary Scot Marciel for East Asia Pacific Affairs and Royal Government of Cambodia Deputy Foreign Minister Ouch Borith presided over the third annual U.S. Cambodian Bilateral Dialogue. The two delegations covered a range of topics including U.S. assistance to Cambodia, food security, climate change, security cooperation and regional issues.

U.S. assistance to Cambodia is designed to support the Royal Government’s priorities, as expressed through its rectangular strategy, to help Cambodia develop in the coming decades. These areas include poverty reduction, support for agriculture, good governance, and capacity building. U.S. assistance directly supports all of these priorities as it did nearly 60 years ago when the original aid program of was launched in 1955.

The two sides also discussed other ways in which our nations cooperate including our military to military relationship and the impending arrival of the USS Mercy, a hospital ship which will make port in Sihanoukville on the 15th of June. Ambassador Marciel also spoke about U.S. support for the Khmer Rouge Tribunal, and was brief by the Deputy Foreign Minister Ouch Borith on the achievements of the Royal Government's efforts in combating extreme poverty, improving education and healthcare, and expanding basic infrastructure; and the challenges mainly caused by the global economic crisis. The Cambodian side also briefed Ambassador Marciel on Cambodia's anti-corruption efforts and judicial reform.

The bilateral dialogue presented the opportunity for the group review planning for the 60th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cambodia. The Anniversary will be commemorated by a series of events in July. The U.S. Cambodian bilateral relationship has matured greatly during this period, especially during the last ten years. Although there are areas on which we will inevitably disagree, both sides expressed confidence that the depth and breadth of our relationship today will continue to strengthen in the future.

PM Abhisit, he do that because, he just wants to gain his power and getting support for his next term. As we all know that the UNESCO had already signed Preah Vihear temple to Khmer, that mean everything nowe is belong to Khmer people.

I think the PM Abhisit should give up his dream and confront the truth, buth nothing is truth. Otherwise, we ask him go back to study the history again in England country.

Cheer Khmer!

Abullshit knows damn well that thailand will not win this but he has to do it in order to get reelected. if not, they will call him a traitor. Whether he hopes about it or not, he has to do it; and he will lose. He will simply says it is sad that blablabla and thai people have to stay behind him to fight on!!! and so on!!

It s political!
But if it work for him, he will become a hero in thai history.

One or the other way, ahbullshit has no choice. He has to do it!

But hun sen has to do it either. He will win and become a hero.

Finally, ahbullshit wins, Hun sen wins. And the losers are us, innocent khmer and thai, who believe this game from the start.

There is no such problem really. I think this preah vihear will stay on forever just to get the political incentive go around, particularly in thailand.

i agree with 5:04
but it seems that everything is almost in control, and the politics moves on. The strategy is that make preah vihear a problem provocative but not a real issue.

With time, I am afraid that it would become a powderkeg of a greater devastation of both people.

I think we as Cambodians should sue the French governments for Cambodia lose her territories to Thai, Laos and Yuon. Because Khmer was under French Indo-China colonized for over 100 years did not have the right to give her territories to whom ever they like....As Khmer and I always remember her well

Sue Thailand for abusing human right law. Thailand must stop discrimination against Cambodia.
