“These are the high officials of our Kingdom of Cambodia.” (sic!)Members of the royal family should be appointed to ambassadorial positions, where their political neutrality and high educations can serve Cambodia, an outspoken prince says.
The royalists have diminished rapidly as a political force in recent years. But members of the royal family still have “high knowledge” in the constitutional monarchy, said Sisowath Thomico, chief of cabinet for retired king Norodom Sihanouk.
The royal family currently has just one ambassador; Norodom Arunrasmy, the former king’s daughter, is ambassador to Malaysia.
Officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs declined to comment, but Cheam Yiep, a National Assembly lawmaker for the ruling Cambodian People’s Party, said he personally supports the idea.
“These are the high officials of our Kingdom of Cambodia,” he said.
Yim Sovann, a spokesman for the Sam Rainsy Party, said in other countries, royal families work on social issues, charity or justice. Positioning royals as ambassadors would not be politically neutral, as those appointments would come through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The royal family has gradually lost political power. Sihanouk stepped down in 2004, ending a long career of statesmanship, and in subsequent years, the royalist parties have lost support.
Around 30 members within the royal bloodlines have ceased politics, Sisowath Thomico said. The royal family has sometimes feuded, or members have opposed each other in politics. But that’s in the past, he said.
“Royal family members almost all have stopped doing politics and have come to serve the king, serve the throne and serve the nation in a different way,” he said.
Ambassadorships could be one way they might contribute, he said.
Sisowath Seryroth, second vice president of the Funcinpec party, said royalists should not leave politics, not “until there is a law stipulated by the National Assembly and Senate that bans royal family members from doing politics.”

The recent track records of royal in politics was an utter failure. This is what we call incompetent, and sending incompetent people to work as ambassadors will only compound the misery of our lives. it dosen't matter how high their education is, if they failed to make progresses in their endeavors, then the high education means nothing. If these monkeys(Princes and Princesses) want to regain the respect of the Khmer nation, then go do military services like the rest of the British princes. Learn how to be like Prince William and Prince Henry who are doing the good deeds to the British nation by joining the British armed forces and volunteering to help the poor around the world (in the case of Prince William).

i think that the royal members should be put to use in servicing the country in some way or another. ambassadorial position for them is a great idea, anything but politics for them. nowadays, there are many ways educated people like the royal members can help contribute to the country development, etc...

The royal family members are not all highly educated neither are they all intelligent and qualified for the position of an ambassador.
Norodom Arunrasmy is not highly educated neither is Norodom Yuvaneath and there are many other examples.
Like any human beings there are those royals who excel and there are those who are useless.
The position as an ambassador for a country should be given based on qualification; in other words the quality of a candidate who can serve Cambodia well as an ambassador and should not be based on the fact that a person is related to the royal family.
Prince Thomico indicates it clearly that he is not that intelligent and logical when he suggests such a thing, considering the fact that the royals are not highly popular among educated Cambodians nowadays.
Like everybody else they need to prove themselves for the position and not beg the government for the job!
You, royals are lucky because the majority of the Khmers are not yet well educated. You just need to wait and you will know how you are going to be dealt with in the near future by the younger Cambodian generation.

agree that all gov't position is by qualifications, not royal blood or what have you. otherwise, we're talking about corruption again because favoritism and nepotism, etc are all forms of corruption, really! give everyone equal chances by their education, their qualification that meet the requirements, etc... that the right way to do it, not by begging for influential position in gov't, ok! cambodia cannot afford that kind of corruption style again; it was the past already, thank god. cambodia is now moving into the future with the rest of the educated world.

Prince Yuvaneath's children are educated in the US but they already have good careers. Prince Rannaridh's two sons are educated men from Switzerland. Many of them are really educated people we don't hear about. They don't need jobs in Cambodia only Prince Thomico and Prince Rannaridh who need cash to support Phalla Ouk.
Prince Ravivaddhana is a highly educated man, and he also has a very good career in Italy. May be Prince Thomico speaks for a few Royal members not the new generation Princes and Princesses many are educated in the US, UK, France and Italy.
Prince Thomico just wants to copy cat from Thai Royal, most Thai royal family members are sent to be ambassadors, not much education either.

To 9:29 AM, I think by nature most, if not all, officials/people (not limited to those of Funcinpec) may take opportunity and make best use of their power/influence for their own advantages.
From my observation and personal experience, which may not necessarily represent the whole Funcipec or Royal Family, they were very corrupted, you know my family and people in my village were tricked into selling our property for their election campaign in 1993 amd 1998. Finally when they won some parliment seats, they forgot us, all their promises with us were forgotten. we were left behind in miserable situation. Just this experience, we had enough with those corrupted FUNCIPEC, (once again I am not saying that officials from other parties not currupted, neither am i attacking the party.
In my personal opinion, if they or the royal family committed good deeds, they would be deserved respects. if not, that's a different story. Look at thai royal family? how did they gain so much respect and loyalty?
Last, I don't know why you painted or compared me to that drug dealer. This may make me have a judgement for you...I don't know who you are, where you from, or which parties/organization you were/are affiliated, or what your intention is. Having intelligent, well-educated people in the position of ambassador is essential for Cambodia. Therefore, the positions should be given to the people who are most able.
It does not matter or it should not matter whether the proposed ambassador is a person with or without royal connections. It should be the best person for the job.
Be careful what you wish for or else you'll end up with the great-grandsons of Hun Sen being given top jobs overseas simply because they are the grandsons of a former 'king' who used 'his money'[!!!] to buy an expensive 'good' education for his family while letting the rest of the country rot.
Also, we should ask how the 'royals' got their expensive education?? Who paid for it?? Where did the money come from?? Why did you receive such wonderful education and the rest of us got sh%t??
I whole heartedly agree that Cambodia needs to use it's human resources and so those with overseas educations can be useful. However, how many Cambodians with a good education have not returned to the country because of the political climate???

Prince Sirivuth's children from his exfrench wife, Prince Yuvaneath's children, Prince Rannaridh's children and many of them are educated in the US, and Europe and they are already have good degrees and good careers. Quit barking will ya?

Anyway, I know that controversial roles of the so-called abosolute monarchy in Thailand, and I am pretty aware of the disgraceful heir prince, the princess and other royal members. No thai people dare to openly discuss that due to the unfortunate Lèse majesté. A Thai socialist, Giles Ji Ungpakorn, for example, sought refuge in UK to avoid Lèse majesté charge. They even banned the nation Phumibol's biography written by Paul M. Handley, a freelance Australian journalist. Is there any Lese Majeste charges agaist Cambodians or those who violate the Khmer Monarchy?
Ok, now let's say the Thai monarchy are quite similar to Khmer royal family. Some of them misbehave, harrash the nation by their sex life, using their influence to take advantages of the nation wealth for their own property... so on and so forth.
But they are also different- consider yourself, you may say that thai people respect or not dare to talk about the royal family because of the Lèse majesté. Do you think this law alone can empower or expand the influence of the thai monarch institution in Thailand? I guess not. Maybe thai citizens are in the best position to answer this doubt.
Back to Cambodian monarchy, according to the nation constitution, "The King shall be inviolable," is there any efforts to enforce this provision? why and why not? i am not blindly praise thai king, bust just bringing some critical facts into discussion.

Princess Vichara married to a Frenchman and has children. She has a Master degree from an elite school, ecole de mine; and she can have a very good job in France without a doubt.
Prince Sirivuth married to a rich business Khmer woman, and all his children with his French ex-wife are all educated at NY Univ. Prince Rannaridh's 2 sons were both Computer Engineers from Switzerland work for a big company and hsqrt in the US.
Prince Thomico's dauighter just married to a French man, she's educated and work in France. Thomico does not need another job when he is paid by King Sihanouk about $600/month, the salary that the King received from China 1.3 million/year.
The middle one with a yellow shirt look likes ex husband of Princess Arunrasmi,; if so all his children are educated in the US.
The children of these Princes and Princess are educated in the west, are very open mind people and they don't need jobs in Cambodia.
May be Thomico spoke for a few old generation who have little education.
Even the jerk Prince like Chakrapong, his children are well educated in the US. They exposed to the west and they are not behind the bush. Some of them changed their names to American names, and never talked about who they are or care who they are, they enjoy life and often send food and clothes to help the poor.
Prince Yuvaneath's 2 children are well educated with good careers in the US and Malaysia. Many more successful children of the Khmer Royals are not in Cambodia sucking the jobs. Like Princess Pekina sends supplies to Cambodia every quarter, she is in NY working for a good company with her master degree from NY U. She married to an American white boy- good family.
