Chea Mony, labour leader made an announcement that he had withdrawn his plans for a three-day strike, against the newly approved rise in the apparel sector’s minimum wage.

During a meeting of its 125 labourers of the Free Trade Union of Workers of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Mony, the Union’s President made the announcement that, the planned strike, which was to commence from Tuesday, will not take place.

Last week, Mony had rejected Labour Advisory Committee’s decision to implement the hit of an amount of $11 in the minimum wage, a rise that a few union leaders considered to be insufficient to meet with the worker’s requirements. However, on Sunday, Mony informed that, he found the raise sufficient.

More over, Mony also added that, although he agreed upon the government’s decision on minimum wage, he would continue to push the employers for additional discounts such as pay adjustments for senior workers who are not able to directly benefit from the increment in the minimum wage, and an assessment of the LAC’s decision to freeze the minimum wage negotiations until 2014.

In addition, Mony has also urged major industry employer’s group, Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia (GMAC), to discuss FTU’s concerns, and has threatened to demonstrate a strike if no meeting is granted to him.

As per Ken Loo, Secretary General of GMAC, they would listen out to the union’s stance, but the decision of additional adjustments for minimum wage will only be made by the government.

remember minimum wage required time and depends on the cost of living, etc that dictates it. so, they get this small raised for now, but a few more years, they will get more pay raisings. be patience and don't expect a huge pay raise at one time, it goes with time. and also work out a compromise with the business; that's just part of life skills, etc... good luck!

you have to know that how much one worker make money for employer per month, how much employer spend for worker per month including admin cost, tax, bribes, export, etc...., and how much profit employer make per month from each employee, and the increasing of goods price. According to the research of economics expert, employer in in Cambodia make more profit than employer in VN and Bangladesh though they spend much in bribe to government officials, and high cost of utilities. Employers affect from high cost of utilities and bribe, according to HE Mean Sophea in LAC meeting on July 8, don't worker affected from this high cost?.

Vorng Soth, the minister of Labour and Vocational Training said the research by economic expert is not reflected the reality in Cambodia. I wonder those scholars government sent to study in VN, USA Germany are stupid because they release the wrong report on their research. And if those scholars are stupid, so how much ordinary people un Cambodia stupid including Hoon Xen, and Vorng Soth never went to high school?.......

I am pleased to let you know as well that the real increase is $5.00 not $11.00. Because another $6.00 employee received every month already. It is sorrow that employee never choose capable representative such as Chea Mony. Is there only Chea Mony in FTUWKC to run? Sam Rainsy said the standing water never as good as running water. So why only Chea Mony is the president of all time. This to show that FTUWKC has no capable human resource to run.
