Thailand will try to depoliticize the ongoing border conflict with Cambodia and to solve the problem through negotiation, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said on Monday.
"We don't want to have any political problem with the neighboring country. The border is still open now. And, all agreements we have had with Cambodia are still in place," Kasit told a press conference.
Kasit's remark was made after the World Heritage Committee ( WHC) decided on July 29 to reschedule its discussion on Cambodia's management plan for the Hindu Preah Vihear Temple to its annual meeting in Bahrain in 2011.
Prior to the WHC decision to postpone its discussion, Thailand threatened to walk out of the WHC meeting if the panel considered the Cambodian plan since the Thai side had not yet looked into details of the plan, which was handed in by Cambodia to the WHC panel just shortly before the meeting.
Thailand will proceed with the Thai-Cambodia memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the overlapping continental shelf area signed in June, 2000, under the then-Democrat-led Government, instead of the 2001 MOU signed under the People's Power Party-led Administration, Kasit said.
The current Abhisit Vejjajiva-led government has earlier protested against Cambodia by deciding to cancel the bilateral agreement based on the 2001 MOU, which later paved the way for Cambodia to register the Preah Vihear Temple as its unilateral World Heritage in October, 2009.
The 2001 MOU was allegedly unconstitutional. Ousted former Thai Premier Thaksin Shinnawatra and the then People's Power Party-led government linked to Thaksin were allegedly having conflict of interest behind the 2001 MOU.
Thailand and Cambodia have historically laid claim to the site, which is located on a mountain top on the Thai-Cambodia border. The disputed area of 4.6 square kilometers has not been demarcated.
In 1962, the International Court of Justice ruled that the Preah Vihear temple belonged to Cambodia. But, the 11th-century Hindu temple can only be easily accessed from Thailand.

well, the reality is, if thailand kept to their promise and good neighborly rule, then, it is a positive sign for cambodia to talk bilateral, friendship, etc, with them, i think. because cambodia too don't want to keep making enemy with thailand or siem, but if they kept flip flopping and violating the international law, etc, then the way cambodia sees it, it is useless to deal with thailand in that regards, thus we will do our own thing, of course. however, i think this is a good sign to come if thailand changes their way they are dealing with cambodia about preah vihear and the other border committee team so we can fix or properly mark our common borderlines once and for all. we will be watching how thailand keep their promises, etc...!
i think both sides should demand that they use the same map to properly demarcate the borderlines. keep in mind that certain areas along the line will have exemption to the rule, e.g. the preah vihear temple areas, watershed rule doesn't work there due to its location of a cliff top; and i'm sure there are other areas that the rule of exception will apply as well. so keep that in mind when the border committee or team work it out together, really! and if they negotiate or talk with cambodia, make sure both side listen to each other's point of view, but keeping in track with the law, too, you know! i think it will work out fine when thailand stop being emotional and focus more on the law side of it all! on the other hand, cambodia side, we only use the law to deal with thailand since 1962 onward as indicated because we feel war is unnecessary if we haven't exhaust all diplomatic methods to solve our common problem. i think thailand and cambodia will be better off once borderline is properly demarcate with blessing of the internaitonal recognition, etc... then, both countries can really talk bilateral, until then, bilateral talk should not be on the agenda yet because it will conflict with other unsettled issues, like borderline, i think! again, use the same map to demarcate together, no more thailand using this map or cambodia using that map; use the map that is internationally recognized, that will help a lot, really!

I totally agreed with 10:59. there is no friendship with siam plus youn. Past, present, and future. History have prove it many many times hence our once large empire is shrivel to size of Oklahoma state. It will continue to shrivel if we continue to believe those back stabbing beasts. We must Keep our military strong and updated...educate our people...and never back down or hesitate to protect our land.

Why wasting so much times with Thailand. Preah Vihea is belong to knmer. Draw a clear line. It's wasting everyone's time. Using forces if we has to and move on. You guys are sick. What I'm trying to say is why settle for less.
Since Hun Sen was a Khmer Rouge commander, now a Khmer Rouge leader and had many of his political opponents and journalists assassinated, I wonder if he have any plan to assassinate the Thai Prime Minister (Ahbullshit Vejjajiva)?
Thailand is such a sore loser. Educated people like the ICJ and the UNESCO never agreed with Thailand but always agreed with Cambodia.

in reality, siem pad thugs don't understand that the borderline was already well-defined by the international treaty of 1904/1907. the issue now was the neglect of the borderline, so now both side must work together by using the same internationally recognized map to remark or re-demarcate these same borderline into a more pronounced more defined line than what was being neglected or lack of maintenance, etc... key is use same map, ok!
of course, homework is required to do this task once and for all. international law must be observed and be respected, especially by siem or thailand side. any emotional argument by siem or thailand pad thugs people must be abide with the international law, etc. in the court of law, law is substenance and is strictly enforce to be respected, not argument against. you only argue against the law before it when into effect or accordance to the statue of limitation allows, not after it expired,etc..., you know! if you don't respect the international, you are in violation and thus deemed illegal, like the case with thailand or siem pad unruly pads!
Cambodia pays the price of Hun Sen error, he bet the wrong horse, Taksin was the wrong choice..
