Cambodia is preparing to have reserve soldiers in a move to reform and perform better military affairs, a military official said Monday.
Gen. Chhum Socheat, spokesman of Cambodia's Ministry of National Defense said the draft decree on recruiting reserve soldiers was approved by the Council of Ministers last Friday and is now awaiting final approval by His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni.
He said the reserve soldiers are practiced in many other countries around the world and it has nothing related to the border conflict with Thailand.
Chhum Socheat said the main purpose of having reserve soldiers is to apply to military reform and to better perform in military affairs for a long-time vision, and that has nothing behind the border conflict with Thailand.
He said the reserve military will include those contracted soldiers, professional retired soldiers or those who retired from the military before retiring age.
According to the decree, the reserve soldiers will serve five years and if necessary, will extend two more years.
Cambodia adopted the conscription law in 2006 which requires all Cambodian citizens aged 18 to 30 years to enter a compulsory military service.

When CPP needs you, it's good with you, when you're wounded or CPP doesn't need you, CPP will drop you and grab your land, saying fuck you soldier!
I agreed with to have conscription going. Training alone will have young Cambodians some kind of disciplinary in live, not to mention military preparation just in case... Disciplinary and organization are is very important traits to learn in a successful life.

I agree with new reform soldiers, I don't support any party but I support our army if they do their job for our nation.
Bring back those past KR, Khmer royals and CPP army together and gear them professionally.
Considering our population, current land mass, and especially GDP, we can't afford to spend too much on military might. A small but strong, effective, updated, mobile, active military who has the capability to call up trained reserves is a better policy for national defence. Until our country can sustain larger economic growth This is a good step by the ruling gov't. Next step should be internal military reform such as updated equipments, training, discipline of soldiers, incentives for veterans, etc. Perhaps even downsizing on active military personel and reclassifying them as reserve would be more cost effective too.

I am Khmer born live in Europe support the idea of the Ministry of National Defense. We all Cambodian inside and outside should have the responsibility to protect the country of our ancestor.

It's about time to get all the street gangs a.k.a bong thom and toch to get into the military so that they can be trained and fight for their country.Make sure to conscript all the children of the privilege as well.

I kind of agree with 2:09AM. I can happen, since the Yuons want to dominate Khmers. The less number of Khmer people exist, the better the chance for the Yuons to dominate them.
Besides, I agree with some folks above on the issue of defending the country, but totally disagree with the way the government has treated the soldiers, especially those who are amputeeted by war.

If the gov't can be trusted Cambodians oversea may not be able to send sons to fight but they send monetary support.
There are many Cambodians live oversea with a good chunck of cash who love Cambodia and would not want to see this country be taken advantage of.
This gov't can mobilized these people for financial resources base.
But first this gov't must earn the their trust. This govt'f must prove that the money be for good use and not for individual pockets.
Cambodians living abroad are not stupid enough to send money to the band of thieves to maintain their life of bandit..
