Over 60,000 garment workers have put their thumbprints on a union petition calling for a mass week-long strike on September 13. The Cambodian Labour Confederation (CLC) called the strike after the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training and the Garment Manufacturers Association refused its demand to renegotiate the new minimum wage structure to be implemented on October 1.

In July, the Free Trade Union of Workers, a union representing over 130,000 garment employees, dropped previous demands for a 53 percent minimum wage rise. It accepted a $US5 monthly increase offered by the Labour Advisory Committee, a body made up of government officials and industry representatives. The rise means the minimum monthly wage will be $61, far below the $93 workers were demanding. The CLC and other smaller unions are demanding that the minimum wage be set at $95.

5:01, i guess this guy has never work in factories before, he/she must be one of those rich kids live off mum/dad. I'm sure if you are one of us, you will not dare to say it

Each months i have only 15-20$ to send to my ageing parents with debts. You will never understand the problem deeply when it's not your problem!

CPP touches its end exactely like Sihanouk did in 1970 and Lon Nol in 1975 because no body could work 10 hours per day and earn not enough food to eat.
The problem is: 5% of Cambodians absorb 80% of wealth of the country.
NONE would work..

Why you work ?
Your one month salary is 10 times less than a meal cost of Hun Sen children and them they do nothing.

Demand minimum wage is not enough, if the govt. cannot keep inflation down. Because whatever you demand, the inflation will eat all your wage that you had increase.

I support your action...at least it makes the govt people understand that that their policy is not working. While the govt. has all the mean (military, police, etc), you all have your voice (but have to be united like this) to protect your rights. In addition, be careful and protect your out spoken leader (don't let him/her get any acident - otherwise, it would be like your previouse leader). Never under estimate the trick the govt. use to silence those who look like a threat to it regime....

Our country is slovely move under the grip of dictatorship...Hus Sen loves his power too much..he will maintain it with all cost...that even at the espend of Khmer life...Khmer have to realize and accept that they are sufficate under this regime...change must come sonner or later. And the Cahnge can only come from within individual within the country...ready to accept change mobilize enough with a critical mass. Also learn something from thailand...the govt. will use force to disbust the protest...have plan to how to respond to do that....Good luck to all

teachers' salary should be set at a minimum wage of $100.00 US dollars. don't forget the cost of living adjustment too!

Since I live overseas, all I can say is whatever action you take, stick with it to the end. DISCIPLINE and SOLIDARITY in the ranks and files are the KEYS for final success.
Best of luck.

Seem like the garment workers are the only brave people in Cambodia who dare to pose a strike. They should all strike against the Viet invasion too.

I think people in Cambodia are happy with this condition under Samdech leadership. Only those people abroad that dissatisfy the income in Cambodia. People of Cambodia satisfy with Samdech show by national election, they voted and will vote for him forever.
