Cambodians fight for higher pay

A union movement in Cambodia is growing as workers step up protests, demanding higher pay to cope with rising inflation.

Last month the government raised the minimum wage for employees in the garment industry, which accounts for a massive portion of the country's exports, but many workers say the salary increase is not enough to meet the skyrocketing costs of food and housing rents.

Due to a recent plunge in consumer demand from abroad, thousands of people have also lost their jobs.

Aela Callan reports from Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital, on how many are struggling to survive amid the soaring living costs.

Government must increase minimum wage for us ( garment workers)!

It's a lie that the manufacturers didn't make much profit due the to increasing electricity, materials and others, two piece of clothes worth almost a salary of a garment worker in Cambodia! how can we survive?

Cambodia is a poor country, lots of unemployment, and the price of foods is getting more and more expensive! not to mention the rent in PP, we are living and working like hell. It's hard to live on a given wage!.

For now, I only hope that the government will think about us and help to make our living better by increasing the wage!

i think wages in cambodia should be raise as the cost of living is raise as well. mangers and companies should look at it this way, so they don't abuse and take advantage of the workers. they just want a fair wage for everyday living, really!

Interestingly, Cambodia has some of the most far reaching Union protection laws in the region. Even AFL/CIO has representatives counseling them.

We have to understand it is not that the government doesn't want to increase the minimum wages. The government simply can't do it, it is not easy because the government has to ensure that the country is competitive. Like the video said, Cambodia is already losing out to other country, even at the minimum wages we charge right now...
