CIOMAL was founded in Geneva in 1958 to coordinate the Order of Malta’s fight against leprosy. The work continues now in South-East Asia and South American countries, such as in Cambodia.

CIOMAL finances and manages the care centers where prevention, medical assistance, social rehabilitation and medical staff training are organized in collaboration with the government of the hosting country.

According to this site, The Order of Malta is the world’s oldest Christian charity. It was founded in the eleventh century in Jerusalem, where the Blessed Gerard and his followers, knights crusaders, tended to sick pilgrims and to the poor and the needy in the city. No one was ever turned away, as the knights vowed to care for all in need, regardless of religion, race or origin. The to care for the sick and the marginalised continues to this day.
