“If we keep this greedy and violent leader in power, we believe that the resources will be depleted like in the past.”Politically wary Cambodians in the United States need to re-energize and give opposition parties another chance to come to power, a leading opposition figure told a group in the US on Wednesday.
“I am here today to inform you that if you feel tired and lose hope, I, who am inside the country, have no chance and no ability to fight to save our country,” Human Rights Party President Kem Sokha told a gathering of US-Cambodians in Virginia. “We need all of you to continue to support us. This is the last breath of our nation, because until now all major issues that we are seeing have not been solved.”
Only about 20 people showed up to listen to Kem Sokha’s appeal, which comes amid declining interest in Cambodians in the US over politics in Cambodia.
Kem Sokha, who is in the US to drum up support for his party, told the group that major issues like territorial sovereignty, land-grabbing, corruption and the depletion of natural resources all needed attention.
“If we keep this greedy and violent leader in power, we believe that the resources will be depleted like in the past,” he said.
The Human Rights Party won three seats in the National Assembly in the 2008 national election. Kem Sokha said Wednesday the best way now for the opposition to overcome the ruling Cambodian People's Party was to unite “democrats” under a moderate banner.
“I think that the position taken by Kem Sokha and the democrats is right and should receive support from all the people, because this is a regrouping of democracy lovers,” Prom Sunnora, who attended the meeting, said afterward.
The Human Rights party is scheduled to hold its third anniversary and the congress of its North America branch this weekend, as it looks for a winning strategy in future elections.

Kem Sokha is not fidel to his former supporter who did apply funds for his HR's NGO, such Mr. John from U.N, Bun Nara from MA.
After 1997 coup, Bun Nara did provide him financially and shelter, and asked John to get Funds for HR's NGO.
Three years ago Bun Nara visited Cambodia. While in PP,Bun Nara called Kem Sokha for a short visit.

The name of a party can be changed at any given time provided that the court is independent. This court is Hun Sen's. What happened with KNLFP(Lauk Ta Son Sann vs. Eang Moly, Kem Sokha had some questionable roles to play during the break-up, as well. Then, just look at Funcinpec=>Rannaridh, most important of all, the Khmer Nation Party which was forced to renamed after Sam Rainsy to ensure its survival. It would be a suitecidal for SRP to change name now and give Kem Sokha a chance to break away with support of Hun Sen's Kangaroo court. Only the fools will commit this act. It takes more years and years, decades, to build a credible party to go against an entrenched, well-funded party like the CPP - a party that has looted your nation's wealth up to now. It has taken Sam Rainsy almost a half of his most productive life to solidify his base. Kem Sokha builds a party to try to win against Sam Rainsy, a divisive move vis-a-vis interests of the nation hoping to move to a status as an official opposition, with very little, if any, grass roots supports. Cambodia doesn't have the luxury of time for, then the political divisiveness of HRP. That creation in time of unity, a lost opportunity, has handed Hun Sen a total control of the country, as we speak now. Kem Sokha and his supporters need to take responsibility on their short-sighted action. Mr. Kem could have logically realized that it will take decades to win against an already well-established Sam Rainsy Party, before, he has a shot at the CPP as an official opposition. Here, a true nationalist would have submit his own ego and greed to simply working with Sam Rainsy just like Mrs. Mu Sochua who walked in with no conditions or whatsoever, since there are so much productive things can be done together, and it would have not allowed the CPP to take full control of the Parliament. Instead, Mr. Kem chose to be first, a great divider, and now trying to play a unity card, hoping to re-create an environment whereb he can simply go out and declared himself, a new president of a new Party with quick approval from the CPP' controlled courts. Here, Sam Rainsy will be done for good - a man who gave up his rich and comfortable life to serve a country who truly committed to save. That is the danger which can not be risked, not now. It's important to unite, but at what costs because it's irreversible and the country will end up loosing BIG.
