Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Tuesday Thailand and Cambodia will reinstate their ambassadors today, and expected the three Thai villagers who were arrested by Cambodian soldiers last week will return to the country soon.

Mr Abhisit's comment came following the resignation of fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as Cambodia's economic adviser.

"Mr Prasart Prasartwinitchai, the ambassador to Cambodia, will travel to Phnom Penh today, while the Cambodian envoy to Thailand should return to Bangkok the same day as well," Mr Abhisit said.

He said Thai authorities had contacted Cambodia regarding the three captured villagers.

"I believe the three villagers are expected to be released and return to Thailand soon," the premier said.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban in charge of security affairs said he would like to thank Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen for announcing Thaksin's resignation.

"I thank all sides for trying to improve the Thai-Cambodian ties. I believe both countries can now discuss the border situation more smoothly," Mr Suthep said.

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said the Thai-Cambodian tensions should ease and the two countries would have to hold talks to resolve the border dispute around Preah Vihear temple.

"All issues between Thailand and Cambodia should improve as both countries have cooperation in many areas," he said.

The foreign minister said the three Thai villagers who were arrested by Cambodian soldiers last Wednesday might return to Thailand within three days but he would have to wait for Cambodia's confirmation.

National Security Council secretary-general Thawil Pliensri said the Thai-Cambodian ties should be more positive following the reinstatement of their ambassadors.

"Different problems between the two countries would certainly alleviate," Mr Thawil said.

Supreme Commander Songkitti Chakkrabat said the Thai-Cambodian rift should narrow down after Thaksin quit Cambodia's advisory post.

"Thailand and Cambodia are neighbours and have positive ties.

Conflicts may occur but they would not weaken our relations. Instead our relations will be strengthened," Gen Songkitti said.

All kind of cooperation and collaboration must therefore be made equal treatment. Thai must gratefully thank the Cambodia's leadership behaviour and communication strategies and they must also release those Cambodian ordinary people who were unlawfully arrested for thier retrun to Cambodia.
