Cambodia is buying dozens of new tanks and other combat vehicles to boost its military, the foreign ministry said Wednesday, as a deadly border dispute with Thailand rumbles on.
The pro-government newspaper Rasmei Kampuchea reported that 50 new T55 tanks and 44 armoured personnel carriers are set to arrive in the country next week.
Military officials could not be reached for comment but foreign ministry spokesman Koy Kuong confirmed that Cambodia had purchased a number of tanks and fighting vehicles and said further shipments would follow.
"We will have many more" than 94, Koy Kuong told AFP.
He said Cambodia would not pose a threat to anyone with its new military hardware -- despite a long-running border row with Thailand, a spat that has claimed the lives of several soldiers on both sides.
"We have purchased this equipment in order to strengthen our military capacity to defend territorial integrity and to prevent any intentional invasion from another country," Koy Kuong added.
He would not confirm how much Cambodia is paying for the new military equipment or where it is coming from.
Cambodia has an estimated 124,300 armed forces, according to 2010 data from the International Institute of of Strategic Studies in London.
Compared to Thailand with its 300,000-strong armed forces and well-equipped air force, Cambodia has much less military muscle than its neighbour, a situation it has been trying to improve in the wake of the border dispute.
Cambodia and Thailand have been locked in a troop standoff at their border since July 2008, when the ancient Preah Vihear temple was granted UNESCO World Heritage status.
The World Court ruled in 1962 that the temple belonged to Cambodia, although its main entrance lies in Thailand.
The Thai-Cambodia border has never been fully demarcated, partly because it is littered with landmines left over from decades of war in Cambodia.

These T 55 tank can climp a steep hills that are located surrounding Preah Vihear. It is useful only flat terrain and small rough geoplatform.
Does Cambodian government think that Thai Army will invade deep into Cambodia. The answer in "NO". THai Army plan to capture only the main entrance to the Temple. Tank can't be used with the terrain.
Does Cambodian Army plan to use these tank to shell the areas around the Temple when the fighting take place with the expectation that T-55 armor will be useful to protect the troops. Think hard again!!
T-55 are absolete against missiles from airplanes and anti tank artilleries' tank piercing shells. Thai army is known to possesse between 1500-2300 piercing shells that can fire from 20-25Km away and hits tanks with 85-90 % accuracy. So 200 T-55 tanks would be wiped out in less than 2 hours if the big and fierce battle break out and those shells will be used.
Please think hard again to commit tankls and APC in modern battelfield. Missiles perhaps buying more B-21 or better long range MVRLs and guidance digital weapons are better answer.

Those who brag about Apache and A10 or F16 able to take out T55 so easily is so naive. They forgot that even Cambodia has no big airforce, it has invest a lot of air defend system with modern radars, anti aircraft missiles, and many types of anti aircraft guns hidden all over the jungle along the borders. These anti aircraft defend system is very affective in this case because Cambodia intended to array their troop in defensive positions. Even the T55 are dig in and hidden in the jungle and in bunkers.
If the Thai dare to send aircraft in, they will be shot down as soon as they come into the air defend umbrella. If they send in troop and tanks, the hidden T55, artillery, BM20 missiles will take care of them.
If they have success and come in deeper, Cambodian troop will employ guerrilla warfare technique, harassing and cut off their supply from behind.
