A mass strike of garment workers in Cambodia has ended today following government intervention and promises to arrange talks with the garment manufacturers.
The strike began on Monday and involved close to 75,000 workers who were demanding increased wages.
According to the Minister of Social Affairs It Samheng, the government has set a date of the 27 September for a meeting between representatives manufacturers representative and the workers' one.
Ken Loo, secretary general of the Garment Manufacturers' Association in Cambodia (GMAC), told just-style early today that "the strike has died down.... and must end today".
He added that there would be no further strike actions. "All strikes will be ended," Loo said.
In July, the Cambodian garment industry also suffered strikes over the same reason. Although the government agreed to increase the legal minimum wage, the garment workers were not satisfied.
